Enjoyed your presentation. I purchased a Yamaha Clavinova for home and since it pairs with an iPad anyway for easier access to some of it’s digital features, I knew eventually I wanted to upgrade my small iPad to an iPad Pro. I enjoyed knowing all the accessories you are using and why you like them. It was very helpful. Thanks Danae. I subscribed and look forward to more from you.

If there is a new video for Danae then it must be Tuesday. lol I use and older iPad when I play at Churches because I had the same issue with the wind blowing the music around. Whatever Church I play at they always send me PDF's of the music and I import them so they are ready to go. I will take a look at the links you posted to see if I can make use of them. Thank you for another good vid.

I am contemplating switching to an iPad and it's always been a scary prospect for me! I've been a professional accompanist for several decades and just the idea of an ipad glitching or turning off on stage has kept me married to paper! Ha! But I've realized how much easier it would be if I didn't have to lug around all the binders and books (which is totally the point and why everyone has switched!). This video has relieved a lot of my anxiety at the thought! So thank you so much! I think I might be able to now make this switch without too much panic...

Thank you for this video, Danae! I teach piano and I've found ForScore to be invaluable for online lessons especially. I sort my students' music into setlists and we can annotate when we share screens, etc. It's also great not to have to lug a bunch of books around. Like you, i still keep all my hard copies though and scan stuff as I need it. I'm still trying to get used to the pedal (I have a Donner). How do you keep yours from sliding around on the floor?

Yes, it has been quite life changing. For my pedal, I don’t really use anything as I personally have never had that problem, but I have seen colleagues using tiny mats for this. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

Hi Danae. I always wondered how one turned the page- now I know. Also, I would be freaking out unless I knew I had plenty of juice left on the machine. All In all,I am certain that this is the only way forward in this ever changing world, and, on the bright side, you won‘t have to suffer a carrying a heavy bag round ever again!

Bought all that years ago with great hopes but couldn’t get used to it. Pedal would sometimes turn more than one page at once, didn’t like the lack of feel of it, don’t trust the pedal even though you mentioned you liked the feel. Playing on an upright the pedal is too close to my body for any kind of accuracy. Hope others have an easier time of it.

Very useful, thanks! As an amateur who has to same iPad setup but still basically prefers paper, a few questions (ignore if no time to answer!) 1. When you say you have all your music on iPad… a) have you actually got rid of paper scores as a result. (I have not enough space for all my scores but I would feel a real pang to deaccession most of them.) b) did you scan all your existing music at once or is it more that every time you work on a piece you transition it into the new system? c) do you find yourself compromising on editions as a result, e.g. getting a 19thC edition from IMSLP rather than buying the Weiner Urtext, etc? 2. The pedal… a) How long did it take you to get used it? I have no problem if playing the cello but cannot get my head round it on the piano (partly because I love, and probably overuse, the una corda. I’ll check out the face thing mentioned by previous commenter…) b) what if you have repeats that go many pages back or some sequence of repeats, dal segnos, extensive 1st/2nd-time bars, rondeau/couplet, etc, etc? Thanks again!

Thanks so much! Here are all the answers: I haven’t gotten rid of any paper scores, I have a music library where they are all in alphabetical order. 😉 I wouldn’t be able to part ways with them including all the valuable hand written comments. I slowly scanned most of the scores when I needed them either for a concert or practice. But of course, even today, some are probably still missing. The edition compromise is a danger, but of course I try to avoid that and this is where the Henle app comes in handy. However, especially with piano concertos, I will always order an Urtext version and scan that and not use an imslp version. :) I got used to the pedal completely within a month or so. At this point, my left foot automatically starts moving and tapping when I am at the end of a page - even if it is paper. 😅 As for repeats, you can re-order the digital scores in a way that you copy the repeated pages or da capo pages and thus only need to tap forward and never forward. Hope this helped! 😊

I am a singer in a professional chorus. I was deciding whether to purchase an iPad as I am sick of carrying around thick scores on stage, and in in the waste of paper. I am convinced, after watching your video, that investing in an iPad is the right choice. My biggest concern is how bright it will be on stage, especially during down lights. What are the settings that you recommend to ensure that I do not stand out a like a Christmas tree when I turn it on onstage?
2 жыл бұрын
You can adjust the brightness within the score apps as you usually would on the iPad and especially during down lights, I would suggest to keep the brightness kind of in the medium area. That way, you will not stand out with the light and at the same time, you will be able to see all the scores clearly. Thanks for watching! :)

This is great information. Much appreciated. Do you have any suggestions for pedal placement and angle with respect to the piano?
2 жыл бұрын
I like to place it next to the left pedal at an approximately 45 degree angle to the left pedal. That way, I can easily access both pedals without having to move my heel, but simply by turning my foot from left to right. Hope this helped! :)

Hi Danae, thank you so much for this advice. I recently found your channel and I love your content! As a visually impaired player I wanted to ask about the ipad/app accessibility features. In particular: can you invert colours so that the score background is black and the notes white or yellow? And does the screen size allow for some degree of magnification? Thank you so much or sharing your knowledge.
2 жыл бұрын
You can definitely zoom in and magnify the score as you please. As for the color inversion, I am not aware of such a function on the forscore app, but the magnification is possible. All the best to you and thanks so much for watching! 🙏🏻

Wow! Thank you for such an informative and really excellent video! I haven’t been playing piano for 60 years and I still use paper scores and books. I have many in my collection. But alas! I had a student just yesterday and was explaining to her just how difficult it is to use a music book that is say 2 inches thick! They stay in the cupboard! I’m really tired of turning pages. That is during the learning process. I eventually memorise for performance but really a heck of a lot of time is spent using the score and turning pages! So I will now change! Thank you so much - I’m really excited to get these three things that are needed! Also I’ll investigate the Henle app! Wow it would be great to get all my big Beethoven Sonata volumes in the iPad!

Hi Danae, thanks so much for sharing! I use all these devices and apps for years, but the air-turn duo sometimes turns several pages at once. It’s my second device and this still happens. Did it happen to you already? It never occurs to me on stage, but it frightens me a bit…Best, Nahim

Oh that is scary! It hasn’t happened to me unless I have set it onto the “multiple page turn” setting (where a stronger tap on the pedal turns more than one page). I always double check that this is turned off. 😉 thanks for watching 🙏🏻

Thank you for this Danae! The iPad clearly offers some great advantages. I personally could not use one as I have a sensitivity to screens (there are few laptop screens or computer monitors, for example, that I can use with some degree of comfort -- and I do not do well at all with tablets). There is something else that I am wondering: they have done studies comparing schools that use traditional printed reading material with those that use reading material learned through screens, and they found that retention and school performance, etc., was better in the schools where the students used the traditional printed material. I have also heard an account of someone who tried reading books on an e-reader for a time and said that they retained much less from what they read in this way compared to from what they read from traditional printed books. I do wonder if there is possibly some subtle but important element that is there with the material, tangible score that is lost with the digital image on the screen. Thank you again for your video and, as always, looking forward to more! :)
2 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting! I, too, really love original tangible paper books / materials / scores and the feeling of them. However, concerning the performance or what you retain from there, I feel like it doesn’t make a difference when talking about musical scores since you practice them and read them repeatedly and analyze them in detail as opposed to an ebook that you “just” read once. So in the case of the musical scores, the info you get is probably the same, in my opinion.
@aaronepstein49062 жыл бұрын
@Thank you, Danae, for sharing your experience. This is helpful to know that you haven't found a difference, and your reflection is also valuable that you are practicing and reading them repeatedly, so that working from an iPad is different from the experience of reading an e-book in this regard. Being able to have all your scores in that slim little device is already such a huge advantage. I wish I could use it! :)

Do you turn off the auto-lock in settings on the iPad so the score remains displayed, (without dimming or going to the lock screen) or does the forScore app do that automatically?
2 жыл бұрын
Great question! No, the app doesn’t do that automatically- you need to go intk the iPad settings and turn off the auto-lock in order for it to always be on!!
