Corporals Corner do you think the laplander would be closer in performance if it was new? I'm sure the silky would still cut faster because, well, it's a silky. Just curious how much closer it would be with a new Laplander. After a year, what do you think? Thanks for the review

Thanks for the no-nonsense videos. For someone who’s transitioning from car “glamping” to learning actual survival skills and homesteading, this channel is great. Thanks for putting emphasis on the basics like the 4W’s and taking the time to show your knowledge of knots, and thoroughly explaining what you’re doing and why. No fancy editing or music, just like what it’s like in the woods. You’re a great teacher and thanks again for imparting your knowledge! Cheers from cold as hell Canada. Subscribed and hit that bell.

Excellent review. I have had a Silky saw for about 12 years, now I have about four of them, I think they are the best out there. I currently use the Gomboy 240 with the curved blade, makes even more of a difference, pulls the wood right into the teeth.

Great move. Picked up a Silky Big Boy in 2009 for working in the woodlot and around the homestead. I was really tired of saws that didn't last. After pruning apple trees in an orchard and working for a city's forestry department. I had experienced too many failures. I bought a Fanno 13" fixed saw and then theSilky Big Boy and a Silky Pocket Boy for small work. Wonderful tools. Enjoy

Thanks for sharing your experience. I was pleasantly surprised with my first Silky’s performance, and still smile whenever I use one! They are amazing tools. Silky saws cut amazingly well, and with little effort. The cut is surprisingly smooth and straight, and you can cut very thin slices from trees. Need a coaster or wooden trivet? No problem! Silky makes many sizes of saws, with teeth from fine to extra large. My go-to saw for branches and small trees, is my BIGBOY 2000, extra-large teeth. I carry it in the Silky sheath, on a belt. It is long enough, to reach higher brances. Another BIGBOY 2000, stays in my truck - for trees blocking a road. For my Ribz front pack, I carry the lightweight Silky F180, large teeth. I just got a Katanaboy 500; that saw is a beast! The biggest tree I’ve dropped with the Katanaboy, was over a foot in diameter. And that saw is so long, you can reach high branches; one of the benefits of a folding saw. I buy direct from Japan, on eBay: best prices and worth the shipping time. You can get replacement blades, should you ever need one. Someone on KZbin, showed how tough the Laplander blade was: and indeed, it would be difficult to break. The Silkys blades can bend or break, if you don’t use proper pull-saw technique. I never have bent any of mine, but wouldn’t be surprised if I did - someday. I’d just straighten it, and keep cutting. The vastly improved cutting of the Silkys, is well worth the short time - to get used to the cutting stroke. The BIGBOY 2000’s extra-large teeth, will sometime catch on small bushes - but it was intended for larger wood. If you want a Silky for more detail oriented bushcraft chores, you may want to consider a smaller saw, with medium teeth. Best of luck!

Good video and good points made buddy :) You might want to unscrew the nut & bolt, apply a bit of grease and tighten the bolt down firmly. This will prevent the bolt from loosening up over time. It can happen. If you mostly cut softer wood then the 7.5 and 8 teeth per 30mm is great. The Ultra Accel is a great saw.

That vice technique is excellent - I learned something.. I was once holding a branch with a (leather-gloved) hand, cutting with my Silky Zubat. The saw jumped the kerf and landed on my thumb. No permanent damage, but It took an easy hour for it to stop bleeding. Silky saws are sharp.

We have these here in Canada at Lee Valley. $60.00 CAD or $46.00 USD. I've carried an 18 inch bow saw since 1970 whenever in the woods. Tucked between the bottom of my pack and sleeping bag. This one looks fairly compact to carry so will get one soon and can pass it on to my grandkids in a few years. I use varsol or turpentine to clean sap off and oil with CLP. I've used similar small saws occassionaly, but this is much better. Thanks a million for taking the time to do the demo. Cheers.

Anything that saves your back is easily worth a few extra bucks, especially for older folks like me. I can't put my back into a crappy saw and expect to keep that up during a weekend camping trip, nevermind a survival scenario. I learned way back when I was in scouts that good gear is a lifesaver, and poor gear brings a ton of misery. Thanks again for another gem. Also, the body mechanics of the plumbers vice is within the "safe zone" of body mechanics, which is worth a lot, a lifesaver to anyone with bad shoulders or backs.

It is all in the design of the teeth. I discovered Japanese wood saws when staying with a Japanese carpenrpter's family back in 1988. World of difference! Good review!

You are correct sir. I recently and reluctantly switched out my Laplander for a Silky after trying out my friend’s Silky. The Silky is by far a superior folding saw. Now I’m thinking about getting the Big Boy 2000. You could do some serious shelter building with it and it would be much easier than using an axe. I think it’ll cut 8” to 10” logs (maybe larger) pretty easily.

Great saw, great vid. Also, with a Silky saw, you're able to articulate the blade past 180° to allowing for easier cutting all the way to the ground. Wasn't sure if you were aware of that feature. Carry on Corporal, Seper Fi.

Great video brother! I’ve been purchasing and testing folding saws and I have a feeling I have found the last one. Just ordered it on Amazon because of your review. You earned a subscribe and notifications. Look forward to looking at more your videos.

That was a really good wood retention technique you used, it was very secure and as you said, it kerps the saw away from you, many thanks for sharing. I'm waiting for new stocks of the Silky Gomboy Curve Outback Saw so that I can add it to my Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet and Mora Companion Heavy Duty Stainless knife. The 240mm Silky works better and faster whilst burning fewer calories, which make it ideal for processing sufficient stocks of the right sized wood for tent stove and/or campfire. The Silky BigBoy 2000 Outback Saw makes an excellent pairing with a Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, being compact, lightweight and extremely capable.
