Brother please don't waste a minute worrying what people think. I'm an old man now and have been adventure riding all my life, The problem with us bikers is we tend to think we know it all. What the hell does it matter if the handling is affected, you're not on a racetrack. When it's pouring with rain for 3 days and you feel like resting you'll thank yourself that you can keep your kit dry and stretch out in a 3 man tent and read a book, make good coffee etc. You live on your bike so don't listen to people that go camping for a week and think they know everything. Respect to you man, ..you are living my dream

Great conversation, I too become to opinionated at times. Something I must keep in check. Great philosophy, what makes me happy, as opposed to what enslaves me. The fact you are out there living the life says it all. Thanks for sharing.

Just take what you think you need. On a long trip, you just need to buy what you are missing and sent home the things you don't use. We went on a backpack trip and I brought all running and sport gear, which I didn't use.. still regret that I didn't send it home after a month or so. On that same trip I also brought all sorts of coffee gear, and as you described, every few day I made cups off coffee for 'strangers'. It was the best thing I could have carried with me!

Been traveling for more then 35 years on a bike. Comfort when staying at a place is extremely important for me. And for me it is different then most riders. I do not like it to sleep in hotels etc. I like to sleep hanging inbetween trees. And make my own food most of the time. And yeah, coffee is also my problem. And it takes up way to much space on my bike. What i have done since ten years is investing in gear. Like Titanium kettle that i can use for different purposes also. Or a ultralight tarp but larger then normal so i can use that to create an encluse when the weather is bad. And i can cook out of the rain and wind. And also someone else can come over when on a camping.

So finally you reached the wisdom of travelling. If it works for you, it works. And in the end it is all about the contacts with the people you meet. However it is also no mistake to keep an eye open for more compact alternatives of your existing luggage, which saved me a lot of packaging volume over the years. Okay... i became a gear freak 😅

You have a good attitude towards others as well as your own needs. I agree though, it is about having good interactions with others that makes an adventure enjoyable. If offering a coffee helps open that door for you, then its a good idea.

Go with what suits you. I like to go light to allow me to get to places I wouldn't manage on a heavy, unwieldy bike. But I am only 5'9" and just under 12stone. And I only travel for 2-3 weeks, not years. Whatever works. Ride safe 👍

There's always going to be people that think they can do it better, many don't do it at all, but are the first to tell others how THEY should have done it. Your bike, your trip, your life, your enjoyment, not theirs. Do what makes YOU happy, especially when living on the bike for so long.

With that said, i prefer to have the luggage tight and as centered as possible on the bike. Looks still off season where You are, Trondheim? But very soon my friend! Are You heading south then?

It's the difference between Norwegians and most Europeans and Americans... We know that we can meet bad weather right around the next corner, so we plan and pack for it... I can't tell all those times I see people from Central Europe getting caught in a Norwegian bad weather situation where the temperature has gone from + 28 C to under 5 C in a couple of hours with heavy rain and wind that can blow you of the road, with summer riding gear only... You have got in a few situations because of the weight, but you have always managed to get out of it, so keep on riding with what you feel comfortable with...

Spent 3 months on the road last year and about to start again this year. I go ultralight and don't feel I am missing anything. Life is so cluttered I think its refreshing to live without things on the road. At the end of the day, you gotta do whatever works for you. The main thing is to get out and see the world any way you can!

Very true! Ultralight items are nice but just way too expensive for me 😅 I agree that life is too cluttered. I’ve learned that I don’t really need much in life. If I can’t fit it on my bike I don’t need it.

I reckon that as long as the bike still handles well and is not to heavy for you it's all good. I'm an old guy and not as strong as I used to be. So, I intend to load my bike as light as possible. On the other hand, I did get an extra large tent and an extra comfy sleeping bag. At my age, 75, I might need to hunker down to rest or wait out a storm. I got a tent that has a vestibule big enough to stand up in or park the bike in. It's the Big Agnes Wyoming trail 2. Oh, and two air mattresses. I don't want to be stuck in a tent I can only sit up in. Happy trails to you. Cheers !!

Those people that complain about too much gear are the first ones checking you out on your camp chair cooking stakes in your pan on your foldable table. Personally I pack everything, all the luxury items, but in the ultra-light/ultra-packable variant. I paid for it accordingly 😢

I overpack as well. Especially the same hand coffee grinder and a camping MSR espresso maker. Having a great coffee in the morning and being comfortable with clothing, despite the extra weight, makes me feel more confident on my travels. I did it on my bicycle camping and backpacking adventures before I got a motorcycle. Getting slightly lighter but it is hard to change. I justify the extra luggage weight by my lack of it being slim. Also, being cold and maybe wet while in some super light tent & bag isn't acceptable for me. Some things are essential. Warmth at night and dry feet while riding (hopefully hands too). Inexpensive boots need replacement. Being cold and wet on the bike while touring is miserable and becomes unsafe.

Kenneth, it is human nature; We all have different opinions about many subjects, and you're right, we do tend to judge certain things sometimes, and then regret when we look back. It is good to be mindful and sensitive about others. About the luggage, it is your call. You live out of that bike when you travel, and you do need most of those things, so, if you feel comfortable driving your bike with all that stuff on it, it is all right. You cannot judge a person unless you do the same thing for a while and see how much stuff you need and rely on when traveling for months at the time. Some people go through life with very little, while others use double that amount. I think it is all justified. We are all very different. It think life would be very boring if we were all the same.

Yeah that’s a good way to do sort things. For me it was a bit tricky to get rid of things because the bike was my house. So winter clothes ended up in the bottom of the bag during summer, but I it still has to come with me for when I need it in winter. I used everything I brought, but some things were used seasonally.

Frankly I don't give a shit about what people might think or not, about most things. That being said, I've had moments, and ridden in places where "Mission Overload Adventure" was hitting back a bit. Now on a mid size motorcycle I'm trying to address it., downsizing luggage volume and weight reduction. On a >1000/1200CC motorcycle it's less of a concern, well until you tip over or find yourself in tricky situations. On smaller bikes overload definitely affects the handling more easily. But at the end of the day, none of these things are dealbreakers, or less if one adjust to the (given) circumstances. So that's my stance. Smaller bike (8-900cc) less luggage, er well.. hopefully. Cheers.

People who complian that you have too much luggage have no conception of what it is like to go on a multi year trip. You need sme crature comforts and you cant be continually buying stuff that you probably already have at home and sending it home when yo no longer need it, particularly if you are going to need it again. I have been on a multi year trip for the past couple of years which has had a major focus on fishing. This has meant that I am carrying multiple rods and reels, waders. wading boots ad other gear. I have also spent some time working overseas which I have had to take into account in terms of what I am carrying. Carrying a lot of luggeage does afffect the handling of tghe bike and to some extent restricts where you can ride but it depends what you want out of the trip. The weekend warriors can get away with taking far less but it is irritating hearing them expressing their smug opinions based on their limited experience.

Take as much or as little of stuff as you can handle, apart from people being different bikes and riding ability or experience also play a part, what fits one doesn’t fit all. If I was young and over 6 feet tall riding a T7 with lots of luggage not so much of an issue, sadly I am neither, I am 64 and 5’9” and ride a DR 650 with around 20 Kg of luggage, experience over 40 years of riding has taught me you can comfortably live without creature comforts, it is just compromise and adapting. Many comments are probably not meant to criticise or be just an opinion but to educate that there is another way to do things, unless you try you don’t know if it works or not. Life is all about compromise, there is always a balance to be reached, if you want to carry half your house buy a Goldwing and tow a trailer, but it will effect where you can go, if you want to live cheaper and be more adventurous in your choice of route you take, take a more appropriate tool for the job and carry less, especially if you are less experienced. We only learn by our mistakes, either by doing things the hard way, ie personal or not listening to advice to make life easier, most people will try to advice rather than criticise, especially older riders that have been there done that. It is up to you to decide.

OK bringing the coffee scale is a bit much. 😅 I agree with you 1000% and who gives a sh!t what any keyboard warrior says. It’s your lifestyle and you have to live it the way that works out best for you. I bet none of the commenters were living off their bike as you were. I totally get it when you say that you don’t care too much about the bike. I also don’t care as much as some people about motorcycles. It’s a means to an end, and as long as it does what it is supposed to do effectively, and doesn’t p!ss me off then we’re good. Well maybe I like what I have a little more than that but I get where you’re coming from. Keep on doing you and enjoying your life. 👍

Otherwise i lived out of my Klim Badlands suite most of the time regardless of temperature.. That filled about 45l of bags, and i thought that was way to heavy. 🤣. 😅 in my world that is blasphemy 😂 I get the ease of use, but I think it tastes like death 😅 Fun fact: instant coffee is not coffee. It is just the freeze dried aromas from coffee. To make it the boil the coffee in a huge tank with a lid on top that sucks the aromas and water vapor into a freeze dryer that turns it to a syrup and then it gets crushed into small particles. 😅😂 just the coffee nerd in me coming out 🙈

Ironically, he was black and the color black absorbs all light so he would not have been visible in that mirror. Unfortunately, Michael had too much baggage remaining from his childhood ... In summary, if you have too much baggage then you're not seeing yourself.

Live your life, do what you want, how you want, with whomever you want. Concerning the bike itself, there is only one legality: the bike + rider + luggage cannot exceed the "PTAC" as per the manufacture for that vehicle: - not always enforced but don’t let French police get you with overload. - some overweight over long kilometers and bumpy roads can crack a frame, break a shock or render the brakes useless. However these are all time and material and of course you fuck up, you die, your life so no worry. - if you crash and the bike leads to injury or death of someone else, that’s on you. Enjoying the videos, love coffee… ride safe! 🙂✌️

Hey Kenneth, 40kg. I suppose the suspension is setup to accommodate that. I recently upgraded springs on one of my bikes. Alot of the times the manufacturers give spring rates for say 75kg rider. In the real world, full gear, we are 90kg without adding passenger and or luggage. In the end, fully loaded, many bikes suffer from poor suspension. I think if you will be riding loaded like this every trip, a worthy update that will serve you well every kilometer is the upgraded springs (for your weight with gear + general carrying weight). You can get this for the fork springs and as well change the spring on the rear shock without replacing the whole shock. Not dirt cheap to do but still cheaper than full Ohlins set. You will find the bike far better handling for the diverse conditions you ride in.
