I really think we all have our passions. For instance I’ve been reading a lot of X-Men lately. New X-Men, Claremont’s X-Men, Fatal Attractions, and so I can only imagine what it would have been like as a kid to pick these books up on a monthly basis and fall in love with these stories. And so when these updated books come out in beautiful formats they allow to reignite that passion within us. It’s fuel for our inner fire. They make life that much more special. It is our art. Our mythology, our legacy. I once read a quote saying of the thousands of years of existence in our universe we are ever so lucky to have lived during the same time as David Bowie. We are lucky, be it Bowie, or Claremont, Stephen King, or Christopher Nolan. We have these things that give us a desire to see what’s next. To wait for and eventually read that next Hickman book that will blow our minds. These books are a link from our past to our future and I can’t wait to see which old book will be upgraded next just like I can’t wait to read that next new book that will make me fall in love with these characters and stories all over again.

I have a LOAD of the old Batman trade paperbacks from early 90s, things like Venom, Shaman, Prey, Year 1, Year 2 etc. Never thought about "upgrading" them but whenever I get them out to read they seem in fine condition - maybe I just molly-coddle them!

As a new collector I feel the same way about Watchmen, I bought a cheaper 2nd hand paperback just to read and after I finished it I instantly thought "shouldn't of bought the hardcover" or the absolute! I am still torn about Preacher I absolutely love it but the absolute is so damn expensive but looks amazing thanks for showing us what it looks like!

I loved the Marvel Essentials and DC showcases and im sad they stopped prutning them but i understand why. I do try to pick them up when i can find them. Really nice video. For me i have a couple Punisher in several formats and Batman Long Halloween in versions. Keep up the great videos and keep Healthy and safe.

I’ve stuck to my OHC’s for marvel for the most part and I’ve gotten almost every absolute because I love DC and Vertigo. For manga I typically upgrade to any deluxe format of a manga run I own since I only buy the manga I love. The rest I read digital.

I will upgrade to improve the condition of a book (especially if they smell like cigarette smoke) AND also if I got different printings so all the spines match next to each other.

I love the fact that Marvel Omnibuses have the letter columns. When I first startef to buy comics as a boy in the early 1970s the first thing I read was the letters on every comic I bought that day. I also wish they would include all the Bullpen Bulletins and ads for other comics as they have done for the magazine omnibuses. Sadly DC dont do this in their omnibuses but they ate still good as they have a decent run of a title in one book unlike Marvel Masterworks and the DC equivalent.

Rising Stars was the first comic I started buying, I picked it up in trades and followed it up with Straczynski’s Squadron Supreme. Both series were amazing. I went from that into Sandman which interested me because I had just read American Gods. The only reason I picked up American Gods as a blind buy in a random book store I hopped into one day to kill time waiting for a bus is I saw on the jacket it read “as if Jack Kerouac had written Lord of the Rings”. Yes please. And I loved it. It is amazing how my love for comics has grown out of that. Soon after that I picked up Midnight Nation which might be that greatest hidden gem of all time. I was dealing with some serious depression as I picked up that book and it gave me such perspective it literally healed me. Just a little history relating back to Rising Stars. Thanks Omar for the great video.

Glad I'm not the only one......I went crazy with Invincible....have all 12 of the library hardcover editions, all 3 compendiums in soft cover and hardcover, the 3 "absolute" editions with slipcovers I wish they would of completed....AND the entire run in floppies with a 9.2 graded 1st issue. But no trade paperbacks cause I didnt see the point. Loved the video btw!!! I never heard of Rising Stars and think I need to, thanks!

Great video and yeah I do very similar criteria when it comes to upgrading/buying. The 3 year Omni rule is interesting I may have to try that as I've been burned before buying OHC right before an Omni comes out (ex: Waid/Samnee DD). Part of the challenge in that is if I try and wait for an Omni (and it never shows up) the OHCs may go OOP so its a gamble. Other criteria I have been using past few years is I no longer buy thin trades unless its a stand alone story of sorts that most likely will never be reprinted in any other format (ex: Annihilation Scourge). Its just more cost effective and better use of (limited) physical space. I will stop at buying Omnis of a certain size though despite how nice they are, as after a certain point I feel like it's too unwieldy to read and place on the shelf (JSA Omnis come to mind as much as i love that series).

Oh good I know I'm not the only one. Usually it's an upgrade to OHC/Omnibus all the content in one volume or a nicer format, but I have done a unilateral upgrade to get all the content in one volume. My worst single story I've upgraded is Batman Hush: singles, two two trades, single trade, OHC and Absolute. (part of me was happy the omnibus didn't come out). I've triple dipped in ASM, I have the Epics, MMW and the Omnibuses. The Epics I feel are my "Roadie books" I take with me for travel. Even Manga next Viz sale I'm upgrading my Dragonball to the Viz Big format. I have not yet crossed the OHC to Omnibus realm yet, I may have to depending what is going to be in the James T. IV Detective Omnibus that comes out later this year. So you're not alone.

I have the fathom definitive edition hardcover. It’s gorgeous. It’s numbered with a print. It’s also NOT oversized. So now there’s a Michael turner complete collected edition coming and it’s oversized! I contemplated keeping both, but once I get the big boy, I’ll never read the old one.

As a new collector, finding out what I like and don’t like, some upgrade decisions are already affecting me. Notably, whether to get Darkest Night the box set later this year; ditching my Preacher TPB for the Absolutes; Walking Dead TPB for Omnibus; a couple other situations as well. I’ve been going back and forth on whether to upgrade or not, so for me this video wasn’t so much a justification explanation, but a look into what’s important about “my” collection and how a I want to enjoy it. I’m doing a lot of upgrades here, mostly because I discovered a lot of my trades were warping on our IKEA shelves. HC just seems more durable. However, I don’t get the trend towards massive omnibus volumes. They seem so unwieldy to read. I’d much sooner have typical Marvel volumes or Image HCs than the really huge books with 1000 pages. (This is why I searched and recently somehow got all of Invisibles across a few books rather than buying the all-in-one.) I just wish 2000 AD did more HCs, although the Ultimate Collection partwork has somewhat helped with that. (Oh, and Carey’s Lucifer in a user-friendly HC format would be fab.)

I rarely upgrade collected editions, but there are a few exceptions, like John Byrne's FF which I've bought four times now. First time in singles and then sold all my single issues and had to later rebuy them in singles form. Later I got the whole run in tpb form and then upgraded to omnibuses. But generally if I have the tpb it's good enough. John Byrne being my favorite artist is what will get me to upgrade his stuff.

The only thing I have upgraded was promethea. I started buying the deluxes because the absolutes (mainly vol 1 and 2) were nowhere to be found for any sort of reasonable price. Then by some act of god I stumbled upon both of them, new, for cover price! The third one was still available for cover price here and there so I picked that up as well to round it out. Just crazy. They were going for like $300 a piece on eBay.

My biggest double/triple dip sins are with Iron Man (my fave character). For the early TOS issues, I went from essentials to epics to the omnis. Constantly replacing old trades (like the War Machine one) with epics, old hcs with omnis (Busiek run, Dave and Bob run) and ohcs (Bendis run, Extremis). I even upgraded the Fraction run, which I hate, from standard hcs to the ohcs because it's Iron Man. Worse part is, I can't bring myself to sell the now unneeded copies like I do with other books I upgrade. That's why I have stories like Armor Wars in three different editions.

With DC silver age I'm picking up the paperbacks of the material that's been tidied up for the omnis, but that's a pretty limited selection. Will we ever get to Martian Manhunter or Elongated Man? The Kirby issues of Challengers have had Archive and recent colour paperback treatment. While the Showcase line ended before managing to reprint all of the later Challengers issues the two volumes that did come out are the only alternative to tracking down original issues. The horror themed stuff seems to be seeing a decent amount of colour collections, and I presume there will be a Kirby romance collection at some stage, but the military themed stuff not so much, again some OOP archives that don't go as far as the Showcases in terms of how much is collected. They're certainly not my first choice in terms of format but when it's the only game in town I'm in.

Rising Stars!!! I was never deep into comics as a kids I just bought single issues mainly for the art and characters I loved. I came up in the 90's and a Guy like Jim Lee just made me buy a comic to mainly look at at. Rising Stars I read in my 20's and man!!! The story was phenomenal. Why its not a TV series or movie I have no idea! I bought the Compendium and its complete garbage! It almost fell apart as soon as I got it. Now that I'm dipping my toe back into comics with collected editions I find out they made a Hardcover and its all sold out! ugh!!!! I need that Hardcover. anyway great content as always and you're turning into my guide back into comics, so thanks for that I guess ...lol Keep up the great work!

Yo Omar. Waiting on that JLA Grant Morrison omnibus myself.. your previous reviews of the Berserk Deluxe editions actually got me into Berserk.. Have you heard of Vinland Saga? I made an impulse buy and quite cheaply purchased all released hardcover volumes 1-11 of Vinland Saga,I’ve been told Berserk fans should enjoy. BTW what’s going on with the X-men Children of the Atom Boxset? Was it recalled because of that defective size issue where the books once opened and removed from boxset will no longer fit back in the boxset? As for collections I’ve upgraded then downgraded: Batman Year Two fear the Reaper in its original collected Trade paperback format holds the color and inks much better than its various more recents glossy reprints.

I also prefer Hard Covers. I got Snyder's Batman run in HC, If his Justice League is as good I'll get the HC deluxe editions as well. Wish Justice League Dark 2018 was HC and the mask omnibus from HC

I try to avoid double dipping. I also have the Thor annual with the Guardians and Korvac collected in four different books. With all my partwork stuff having art running across the spines those stay in the collection even if I end up picking up something like a Complete Collection or Epic which collects more material. Transformers I'm an idiot with. I've got the Hachette books which have almost everything from Marvel, the UK stuff that had previously been black and white coloured for the first time. I've kept my Titan collections since there's all of one UK issue that got left out of the Hachette books and because they have the original colouring rather than the piss poor recolouring IDW farmed out which Hachette used as the most recent versions. I'm keeping my Beast Wars paperbacks despite those also being collected in the Hachette set because I bought them from Simon Furman's personal stock and they're signed.

Omar, silly question here, but do you do anything special when you read some of these giant books. Such as a favored seating position, type of chair, use a bookstand, etc...? I'm getting older, and finding it more difficult to hold the larger omniboo (sp?) for prolonged time frames. It wears on my wrists, and even my neck. Thinking of trying to find some sort of reading table, where I can have it tilted up or something. I have asked this question on other channels, but never gotten a response. Thanks in advance!

DC has me mad that I am gonna upgrade to the Deluxe Miracle Man from the standard size and thats whats keeping me from Creature of the Night and Up in the Sky.

Oversized editions of previously printed material is the main reason I double-dip. I'm nearing 50, and my eyes can use the help. "Bonus material" has never been a selling point for me. Plus, hardcovers just look nicer, and tend to hold up better if you read a book over and over.

Weirdly enough I upgrade from omnibus to absolute when it's possible. Like preacher. Most collectors let go of the absolute. Don't really know why. The format is sick.

The hard part is that extra wait and that’s what gets many people into buying so many formats. Hey Omar,I have a question....do you use book shoes? I've noticed some of my larger omnis when they are standing on the shelf vertical the pages sag and it puts strain on the binding....should I worry about that? Advice?

i have never, but I know that there are so many of my subscribers that do. I still had my original ones that aren't sagging.
