Awesome video! I just wanted to point something out since a lot of people in the comments are saying something along the lines of "Why would you pay money for a font," when typefaces really take a ton of work by the designer to be read well, give certain feelings, and suit a certain medium well (type is often designed for specific mediums like books or display). Every typeface has a designer behind it, and I feel those designers and their work are often taken for granted. There is nothing wrong with supporting type designers that do really great work!

I don't have dyslexia per se (at least I was never officially diagnosed), but my astigmatism makes fonts with lots of parallel lines very uncomfortable to read. @dealloc
@dealloc 2 жыл бұрын
MonoLisa does look great (although I've never been a huge fan of the cursive glyphs in italicized text), but for $200 (or even $50 for the Personal license) it is quite a steep price for many. Though, I can totally get it's worth for some to invest in something you're going to have to look at for hours end every day, especially if it's part of your job-and even better if you get it as a gift. It's also really hard to find good open source monospace fonts that looks great across all kinds of monitors and devices. The only open source font that I've found so far that suits all my needs is JetBrains Mono which has the right weight balance across HiDPI as well as non-HiDPI screens without needing to dig into sub-pixel aliasing settings, letter spacing and font sizes.

okay. I bought the font on a lark. I wasn't really expecting anything to be different about my programming experience, but this does indeed feel more... chill? I have mild issues with character recognition, I am not sure it is dyslexia as I was never tested for this, but I do often jumble numbers around in my head, and the way I read, write and even think is not linear. This font does appear to be helping with that. I feel as though I am better able to get into a flow state with this font. It is hard to describe, but I think it is well worth the $30 for devs to try it out -- even if they do not struggle with character recognition. Many thanks to Toshi Omagari for doing this work. I guess I get how. I use monospace that is default to terminator, but when I saw those fonts in the terminal of the video, it felt like cozy. Monospace feels like it's robotic, fira code feels like they are trying to be cozy while still maintaining monospace style, where CC felt like (even tho I haven't used, but from what I've seen) it seems like I'm reading doujinshi/manga/eromanhwa, what I love to do. Everytime I open up my terminal and start writing in terminal, I feel like it's so monotonic. So IG that's why?

The thing about irregular fonts in particular being more readable for dyslexic people is a widely propagated myth. There's research specifically showing OpenDyslexic isn't any easier to read for people with dyslexia than Arial. While certain fonts are more readable, there's nothing that makes a font more readable specifically for people with dyslexia. What makes fonts more readable for those who have dyslexia are exact same things that make it more readable for everyone else. And one thing is way more important for readability than the actual shape of the letters, and that is font size. If you want text to be readable, changing the font helps very little, while making it bigger makes all the difference. In other words, if you want readable text, just make it big.

You are completely correct. Whats even more interesting is that the studies cited by OpenDyslexic that are intended to look like they are supporting the font actually are counter to them. They provide no benefit at all. "Heavier line thickness at the bottom of most characters intended to better anchor letters" is pseudo-science bullshit.

Holy crap, I can scan read that code! Normal writing I can glance at and speed read but I can't with most code even though I know to just read the structure since variable names are functionally irrelevant.... this I could read at a glance! Definitely going to have to look at buying this font!

@@WolfgangsChannel I wonder which channel you are talking about.. 🤔 Also, do you use a tiling WM or floating? I've been using tiling for 3 years but have recently been considering a switch back to floating to reassess my preferences..

I ........ am stunned. Ive been coding for 30+ yrs and not once have i ever rly stoppled to question whatever default font comes along for the ride beyond making sure its monospace. I honestly dont think I can even begin to grasp the concept of a font making you feel ... anything .. let alone "comfy and warm". Clearly Im broken and soulless lol.

I don't even know what font I'm using in the terminal. Most likely several different, in different systems. Never even thought about it. (Although I tried to use GOST fonts in the Windows interface...)

I recommend trying out Go Mono, which is my current favourite font (i know no one cares:)). I use it in IDE and terminal. it has no mirrored fonts, looks very pleasant and it is very easy to read imo.

There's also a free Dijkstra font out there used for the same reason. Named after a computer science professor that wrote a book on "A Discipline of Programming" and the shortest-path algorithm, as it's based on his handwriting. A bit quirky, but the letters are supposed to be easy to tell apart.

By the way.. When I look at Monaco it really reminds me of Comic Sans family although being "cleaner" it still has a bit of a 'handwriting' vibe to it. By the way to make it render smooth in JetBrains i had to change the following from "Subpixel" to Grayscale: Settings > Appearance & Behavior > Appearance > Antialiasing > Editor: Grayscale

This video made me switch to Comic Mono as my terminal font. Comic Code may be prettier, but a paid font was a bit too much. In general I kinda like the cartoonish comic sans look of both of them.

The greek one translates as: "the sfouggaras( old profession which is people who went diving into the sea to search and harvest natural sponges, nowadays it isn't that common since it is very dangerous and is known to create health issues to people doing it) from kalymnos (greek island) whispered that he will dive without hesitation." It is just so random and I don't know where he found it
