Why I Use Mineral Oil on My Swiss Army Knives (And Other Knives Too!)

Food-safe mineral oil is my favorite oil to use on my Swiss Army Knives, other folding knives, and fixed blades. It protects the blade and other parts of the knife from rust and will also keep pivots on folding knives moving. Mineral oil is also food safe, doesn’t go rancid, and is cheap.

A tip another KZbinr taught me…. Take an empty 4oz zippo fluid tin, pop the top and fill with mineral oil. Makes for a near free precision oiler for your knives. Have a great day!

Another option for precision oiling is to get a hipodermic syringe (I ran my needle over sandpaper to blunt the tip), pull in some mineral oil and use as needed.

I can vouch for mineral oil. I use it for all my knives. It is cheap and great stuff. I know a lot of companies that make knives will use this stuff. I have even seen some some folks that repackage the cheap mineral oil and sell it for 10-20 bucks for 4 to 8 ounces.

Duhhh why didn’t I think of this. I was just about to look up what to use for wood handled knives after my cleaning search of Swiss Army knives, and when I was a wood finisher, we made badass cutting boards with rare woods that were scraps and used mineral oil. Thanks for the reminder I needed it. Because I bought 2 bottles it was so cheap and I didn’t finish the first

Mineral oil is a good tip. I've been using wood cutting board oil. Which is probably about the same thing, just more expensive. Tip to preserve your oil: pour a tiny amount into another receptacle or dish. Dip your q tip or swab into that, never into the main jar of oil. That will keep you oil from ever becoming contaminated with rust or dirt.

Cutting board mineral oil is actually toxic

Mineral oil can also be used to treat wood, like a wooden cutting board, and in my experience, works just as well as specialty oils

Mineral oil is great, Ballistol is also food safe and works great on knives too, a little more expensive but if you own firearms you can use it on your knives too! Good video as usual!

Thanks! People keep mentioning Ballistol, so I may need to give it a try on my guns. I have been really happy with Breakfree CLP, but I suppose the Ballistol would be less toxic.

Ballistol uses medical grade mineral oil, so yeah. Ballistol H1 is just Ballistol without the odour. Only kind-of downside is that Ballistol is water soluble for cleaning purposes, so you’ll want to reapply it when gotten wet.

Thanks for the tip about Food safe Mineral Oil. I have been using Rem Oil on my knives, none of which have been used on food, but there may come a day when that might be necessary.

Good info, Makes sense! I've been using gun oil to lube my SAK, but I guess I'll start using my cutting board oil from here on out. BTW, in an earlier vid, you mentioned drying out the toothpick and tweezer pockets?... I use canned air with the skinny straw attached. It's very effective. I actually use it to final dry the entire knife inside and out.

I use precision needle tip applicator bottles for applying Ballistol to things like knife hinges since it affords good control. Might want to look into it if that might be something for you. WD40 is great for cleaning and, well, W_ater D_isplacement, but unless I only need to clean something and leave it degreased I will always choose Ballistol over WD40… Because in my experience WD40 will eventually gunk up.

The fact that you had to explain that small amounts of mineral oil Won’t give you the trots makes me worry about this generation! Great tip though. I use mineral oil to sharpen knives on stones. I suck at it though😅

I do that too! I find it good because it’s food safe and so if it leaks onto my blade it’s still safe.

I keep a small bottle of mineral oil in my camp/gear bag. Others pointed out and I agree that is very good for wood, leather and fishing lures (equipment). Hmm, wonder if it burns? Haven’t tried that.

You hit upon a subject that I've been trying to Figure out for about 15 years now the viscosity of the Particular type that you bought and is the same as I buy is thicker than the kind that you get when you buy by the gallon As cutting board oil or food grade oil And this is the only place I can find that particular viscosity and it does make a huge difference the food grade seems to be much thinner and has more of an alcohol content
