In this video I breakdown how and why I use my Universal Audio 1176 UREI REV E compressor on all of my mixes.

Cool video! When I run tracks through hardware before mixing, I usually just send the track in question and record it back in on another track. HOWEVER if there are multiple similar things, for example a lead vocal, double vocal and side vox I usually do it like this: (I'm using reaper, which is of course the best daw ever but I'm sure it works similarly in other daws) I create a folder track, where all the vocals are routed to/through. This folder goes out of an analog output. Usually these vocals are the edited and tuned vocals (maybe some clipgain as well). So I have for example 4 tracks going through the folder. This folder has the hardware output on it and comes out of my D/A into my hardware chain. Next, I have a new track for each of the raw vocal tracks, where I record the hardware-affected audio back in. Those new tracks just go to the mixbuss or wherever, those are the final tracks I'm using in the mix. The process goes like this: Have everything muted, except for say the Verse Vox. On the new "Verse Vox HW" track, I record only the spots, where there actually is a performance. That doesn't take 3-4 min (or however long the song is) but only one minute for example. I go to the first word, hit record, wait till the verse is finished and jump to the next spot. Once I'm done, I mute the track and solo up the next one (for example "double vox"). Exactly the same, I jump to the parts where there is actually singing going on and record the performance back in using the hardware. By using a folder, I don't need to set up the routing for every track, I can just hit solo on the track I want to work on. All of the new tracks have Input 1 as default, so I only need to arm them and press record once it's their turn (my hardware chain comes in on Input 1). This saves a ton of time compared to your method, where you need to cut everything and then align it again. In the time you used to cut everything I could have recorded the whole thing back in (because I would just jump to the spots you would have cut and record them one by one). Bonus: all your plugin processing you did on your output track you could have easily put on the folder track before going out to the hardware. Hope my approach/description makes sense. Killer sound btw!

Started doing this as well. BUT only on the lead vocals and maybe doubles. I’m too lazy to do this to every single vocal track. 😂 I will sometimes run drum overheads through my Distressor.

Just seen this thanks for sharing. Feel like there’s a real need to streamline this type of process. I’m a cubase guy but I think reaper with it’s scripting engine has the most mileage for this. Ima look into it more because it would save me so much time too

This is super rad and I totally appreciate this process. Should I get the soothe plug-in? Is it different than dynamic EQs?

Soothe 2 is an invaluable tool for me. I'd buy it again if I had to. I've yet to see anything rival it and do a better job than it does. It took a lot of messing around with it to fully understand it's potential. Prior to using it, I would use a single band from a multiband compressor to manage problem frequency areas with similarish results.

Just subscribed because the base content was really good. As an aside, though, I'm glad i'm Gen-X and not Gen-M. The word 'screen saver' in a song? Whew, those lyrics; I was embarrassed on the singer's behalf. By the way, "plosive" is pronounced as you would the word "Explosive"... in fact, the words are related. Sweet studio! Congrats. I love having a hybrid studio and great to see what you're doing with yours, looks like an amazing space.

Discussing a screen saver seems more like a Gen-X thing? Do gen-m’s interact with screen savers? They were fun to play with in the 90’s

Problem is not all vocals are created equally.. so you'd need to tweek the settings for each take, unless you've worked the clip gain. I like the idea though. it homogenises the vocal sound... I guess that is good if its the same vocalist. Wortth the watch though and an interesting take.. :)

Generally if vocals are recording with the same setup in the same room, this strategy works. Clip gain + soothe make it possible.
