I have tried the pica also , really liked it and bought the kit , I like having a few just like you mentioned for different colours. But that big pica dry carpenter pencil is amazing. I find that the graphite lead lasts longer than the regular lead. I even bought some of the markers , they are great working in sheet metal , great for tiling with the colours for the pencil. Bought the Pica Pencil at the Woodcraft Store in West Omaha a week ago. I really like the size and feel, and it certainly lays down a smooth line. I bough a plastic 10pk of lead. Awesome. Thank you Terry and company at Woodcraft 😎

I have two Picas, one with Hultafors graphite lead which I find soft and I have Pica hard graphite leads in the other Pica. The hard graphite is better for fine marking so I use them according with the material I need to mark. I also have the Hultafors red and yellow which I rarely use because they are so soft. I really only use them as a last resort for dark materials where you can't see graphite

I seen these pencils and I wondered. I work on vinyl windows, I make them. Will these colored leads work on vinyl like a grease pen? Because I can't easily see a black grease pen mark on a vinyl window coated coffee or chestnut.

im curious to know how far can you push the pencil before its time to change the refill? I mean how much of the "remaining" goes to waste before its time to add a new refill?

FINALLY! Thank you. I really needed a good reason to buy a Pica. I’d say the only thing I don’t like about the design is the location of the sharpener. I.e. you have to take the holster out of your pocket to access it versus the hulfators easy in-pocket access. Ordering pica now.

I just picked up the plumber's pack. Haven't used them yet but so far the quality seems excellent. I'll be using them for everything from carpentry to tile to electrical.

Sorry, yeah the coloured leads work as well. I haven’t had any issues with them in my pica.

Nice comparison. I use both but I feel the HULTAFORS works better because the lead doesn't break in the holster. Also the HULTAFORS sharpener is at the top so you don't have to take it out your pocket to use. Never had mechanism fail on either pencil. (over a year of use) Do your leads brrak in the pica?

I really like how the sharpener is at the top of the Hultafors. That being said, the coloured leads always break in my Hultafors when sharpening. I’ve never had a lead break in the holster of the pica. Thanks for watching

I love the pencil itself, but mine win't stay in the little green holster for anything! It would be superior if the little black bump when into a sort of notch and rotated to lock into place, anyone else have this issue of it not staying in the holster?

@@hammerandhome Yup, i believe that to be the case, shame the return cost was high for my purchase, i just resorted to gluing a little magnetic strip onto the pencil and case, works a treat, personal opinion but i think they could've designed a much better locking mechanism but hey ho, brill pencil as ya say :)

You might have a defective one because that was one of the things that I was really impressed with about the design. There is a air suction that is created when you push the pencil in. There is no way my pencil would ever come out of the holster on accident.

The Hultafors has the sharpener in a better position and also the holder holds the pencil more securely. I use a Pica just cos I prefer that one but the two points I mentioned are my own findings .

Pica holster is designed great. No clue about what your talking about. Sharpener is located in a great spot. WHATEVER!

@@jayvaughn9017 The design of the Pica holder and the way in which it holds the pencil unit could be designed a lot better than it is,simply put if you catch the pencil against something when new it fires the pencil out due to the compression fit,when the holder is worn when crawling around on site/using ladders etc the pencil falls out. People remedy the worn holder by wrapping electrical tape around the pencil,which works but leaves the pencil covered in sticky residue and all the crap from on site sticks to it. As for the sharpener which is fitted on the bottom of the holder to use it properly you have to turn it upside down,not ideal at all when it is fixed inside a pouch/vest etc. plenty users of Pica will mention these problems I have .

I bought quite a few pica and they all end up the same...won't grip the lead worth a crap after using them for a little. Switched to Hultafors and the problem went away.

Pica makes different color caps to match your lead color

When Hultafors makes a problem try to clean it inside with some break-cleaner and then spray some wd40 inside. No problem then :) (hade same issue with pica first model).

Its not abour which brand will hold which lead. You have to know which pencil holds what diameter lead. Most will be 2.8 mm lead. So all 2.8 mm lead will go into any of these pens. Unless they are fine/ultra fine pencils. Then your looking at 0.9 mm, 0.7 mm, 0.5 mm, etc... lead. So any brand of 0.9 mm lead will fit into a pencil that takes 0.9mm lead. You can buy 2.8mm silver streak markal lead and put it into any one of these pencils.

Interesting I find exactly the opposite I much prefer the halftafors because I find the pica stops working and gets gummed up and leads don't break as easy

The Pica is amazing but the Lyra is the king in this area👌.the Lyra is like the Pica but more solid and has the sharpener on top of the kompartment so you do not have to take it out of your toolbelt or pocket to sharpening and thats a big thing for me👍. You can also use the led from anyone of those manufactors in any of the pen. Sorry for bad English i am from Sweden so dont know the gramma😉

And the Pica is a pen they sell at for almost nothing here in Sweden and comes in very variation i quality but Lyra is the original i think and cost about 10us$ here an its so worth it to have a pen thats never fail on you not even when its sooking wet

Pica is extremly bad cuality. Sharpener doesnt work and the lead slip in when writing. As a carpenter i often get dirt inside the pen and it stop working

Sounds like you got your hands on a fake pica because I’ve owned the same pica pencil for two years solid and it has helped build over 30 houses and haven’t had the first issue. And are you using pica brand refills? If not that could be your problem

Had 3 hultafors all stopped working. Any dry wall dust or even mdf dust then the cap will stop going in and out and/or the lead will not be gripped. Hultafors ones are not good

Wait? What? You were going on and on about the PICA pencil, and it's great leads, but you said, that you ran out of PICA leads, so you were using Hultafors leads in the PICA pencil. Or maybe, I'm drunk, but haven't had a beer yet, so I don't know.

After all these years in construction, I'm tired of those Carpenters pencils the flat ones that I can never sharpen. Just ordered the Hultafa last night after watching your video but I'm going to order the pica as well to see which one I like better. Thanks for the video
