I've only been to Japan once, and my friend was living in Fukuoka. I was glad that got me to go to a 2nd city, rather than just Tokyo. It really made my trip feel more well-rounded.

Absolutely - the rest of Japan is completely different from Tokyo so I'm glad you got to see more of it! It must have been good having a friend who knows all the best local places to go as well.

Ooh good choice! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Luckily I didn't have any trouble with the volcanic ash in Kagoshima, although you can see it in the gutters. It can be a problem for locals though if they try and dry washing outside.

We are planning on returning and starting out tour from Kumamoto, it looks like a great base for travelling out from. We were also going to take the ferry to Busan fro Fukoaka. Good to know about the boat trip from Kumamoto, you're right, boat trips are always good, feels like such a novelty these days.

Hi Amy, I can't wait till I can get back to Japan. I am thinking of staying in Kyushu for about a month. I was really looking at Kumamoto as my base. I remember Nagasaki as a great place to walk around - lots of hills though - and with a very relaxed atmosphere. Absolutely worth a visit. I wonder how much the new shinkansen will change tourism as it felt a bit isolated before.

My wide and I fly direct to Fukuoka from Honolulu and stay near Hakata Station. We have no luck getting tickets on Yufuin no mori to Yufuin. This visit we took the shinkasen to Kurume and then local trains to Yufuin with a change in Hita. Nice scenic, ride but no announcements in English on the first local just a poster with station names. Both trains were like buses. Doors only open at front of car one where driver collects fare. No problem getting Yufuin no mori tickets to Beppu.

i going to japan for the first time for 12 days during the sakura season in april 23, entering and leaving from narita. however i really want to go to kumamoto and especially the nagasaki biopark. would you recommend squeezing tokyo,kyoto,osaka in the itenerary? or would that be too much?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces Жыл бұрын
Ok I just looked up Nagasaki Biopark and after seeing that guinea pig bridge and the capybara, I want to go there too now! :-) I really want to go to the Kumamon Park in Kumamoto, and you can get a boat across to Nagasaki and the Unzen Hells. There's enough to do in Kyushu that you could easily just go there are Tokyo. You could stop off at Kyoto on the way from Tokyo to Kumamoto, then Osaka on the way back, to break up the long train journey. Or take an internal flight when you land and make your way back up on the bullet train. It is quite a lot, but do-able if you spend only a short time in some places. If you're thinking of cutting anything out of the itinerary, I'd say Osaka because it's a city like Tokyo (while it has a different vibe, for your first trip the other places are more different from each other). Hope that helps!

I've been to Japan (from the US) 5 times, the last trip was late 2018, 10 days around Kansai with a Gion, Kyoto base. Kyushu, and Fukuoka specifically, is on my plan next, maybe 2022. I try to learn some Japanese and get out to less touristy places, smaller towns. My Japanese teacher whom I adore lives in Miyazaki, I might visit there too. Good videos, I watched them to the end which is rare for me haha. Subscribed. Edit: Btw, from Fukuoka, maybe hop on the ocean ferry to Pusan for a day or 2.

If you are looking for Off-beaten paths or want to avoid Tourist traps, and can speak the basic "tourism language" in Japanese, as a local person of the country I recommend visiting remote islands. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Got%C5%8D_Islands en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakushima en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amami_%C5%8Cshima The above three examples are the typical remote islands of Kyushu as travel destinations that Japanese people think of. (I mean, those are relatively convenient to get there (than other small and minor islands), and there are accommodations for travelers as well.)

Quite late to watch this video myself. Always fun to see them though ^_^ Had my second Vaccine 2 weeks ago so I should be fine now. All I need to do now is wait until Japan opens it's borders again to the Netherlands. As it stands they closed them at least for Dutch citizens. I was in Kumamoto and Beppu in 2019 myself. Had a good time there. Indeed a shame that the earthquake damaged the castle, but I did visit the palace vicinity, just the not castle insides as those were being renovated/repaired.

How many Kyushu passes should I buy if I travel the whole of Kyushu in 15 days?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 6 ай бұрын
You can get the pass for 3, 5 or 7 days, and there are passes for the whole of Kyushu, as well as northern Kyushu (that's the one I got earlier this year) and southern Kyushu. Depending on your plans, you'd need to work out when it's best to have each pass, compared to buying individual train tickets. Ideally you'd do most of your long distance travelling within the period of a rail pass, to save the most money, then get individual tickets for shorter/fewer journeys eg if you're staying in one place for a few days.

Hi, Amy! Do you and Phil ever rent a car in Japan? What are your considerations, as a lot of places out in nature and the inaka are not always conveniently served by public transit?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 3 жыл бұрын
Personally, I prefer not to rent a car, because neither of us particularly enjoy driving, and it feels more like an adventure on the train! I just prefer not to drive on holiday - then we can both have a drink if we want to, and we've always found we can get to places we want to go on the train. In Japan there are also lots of tolls on the roads, which can add up (although there are passes that make it easier). The train system is so good that I've always preferred to use that.
