Why I Won't Be Buying Criterion's CC40 Set (But Maybe You Should)

I am not going to buy it, as I have a half of the movies from this box set - 8 1/2, Tokyo Story, Bicycle Thieves, Jules and Jim, Yi Yi, Sweet Smell of Success, On the Waterfront, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Mirror, Barry Lyndon, Mishima, E tu Mama Tambien, My Private Idaho, 3 Women, Red Shoes, The Battle of Algiers, A Woman under the Influence, Cleo from 5 to 7, Persona and In the Mood for Love. I can survive without some of the titles like Repo Man, Weekend, Ratcatcher (I live in Glasgow, thank you!), Safe, Seconds, Love and Basketball and Wanda. If instead of Repo and Co they added Rules of the Game, Seven Samurai, Harakiri, Fanny och Alexander, Red Beard, Ivan the Terrible, Leopard, Blow up, Kes, 400 Blows, Cranes are Flying, Discreet Charm of Bourgeoisie, Kwaidan, Ugetsu, Breathless, Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Les Enfant du Paradis, Ash and Diamonds, that list would be more attractive.

Yeah, it's a weird set. Too expensive for the newcomer, too many duplicates for longtime fans. I don't know who this was made for.

Who is this set for? Any existing CC customers probably own a fair amount of the films already and the price point is way too high for a casual fan who is new to the company.

It’s a celebration package. Those will appeal to someone.
