Why I Would Buy a Used Lexus GX470

carbuyingsupport.com Greg -Your Car Angel - explains why the Lexus GX470 is one of the best used 4X4 that you can buy, comparing it to the Mercedes Benz ML320 and the Land Rover LR3. In terms of comfort, reliability and workmanship it does not get any better than the GX models from Lexus. Lexus uses the same time-honored materials and assembly line processes that has been proffered by the parent company of Toyota. In the tradition of any truly capable off road vehicle the GX470 is the dominant player.

I'm a Lexus guy for life, on my third one now, 2008 IS250, 2010 RX350, 2017 GX460, I can never go back to anything else and will probably do the GX from here on out, I've always loved the 4Runners, especially what's out now and the GX is all that and more, to me it's utter perfection

travel78 I drove a 2017 RX as a loaner before I got the 2017 GX and I have to admit it was pretty smooth and peppy as well. The GX is a tad more sluggish at first but if you romp on the V8 you can get some great power out of it that overall I feel is more/better than the RX. As for the ride, I've always been a fan of heavier vehicles with higher riding heights and thicker tires for an overall smoother ride. I might be biased, but when I'm riding country roads the smoothness, sway, and acceleration of the GX in my opinion is perfect for me and I feel at the end of the day better than the RX. To be fair, the RX is a very mean value and it's neck and neck probably to most people.

Greg I couldn't agree with you more. I just bought a 2013 Lexus GX460 with 89K miles on it and it is impeccable. Everything works, inside and outside look great and I couldn't be happier. The ride is a little rougher than my 2003 BMW X5 3.0i but its a hoot to drive. As for the BMW, what a money pit. Roughly 173K miles on it and everything that could go wrong has i.e. transfer case, oil leaks, etc etc etc. Thank you for the excellent videos!

We replaced our Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2009 with a Certified Pre-Owned 2007 GX470 that only had one owner and only 26K miles on it. It was pristine and we got a great deal on it. I had never owned a Lexus before, but I assure that after owning this SUV for the last decade, I will sing the praises of Lexus to anyone and everyone. Our GX has taken us everywhere in comfort and style. Snow, mud, sand, loose terrain, freeways, around town, you name it, it does it! Best things about it is how quiet it is on the freeway, the comfort of the seats, the power, and its reliability. In the 120K+ miles we've put on it, the only thing we've had to replace was the alternator. That's it. Nothing else but regular maintenance, tires and brakes. A great mod that I did was I installed a gas strut on the rear door, so it opens on its own and stays open when I need it to. It was simple to do, here's the video I referenced: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jl7RYXumh66Cis0 I have friends who ask why I don't trade it in for a new SUV. They say, "that thing's 12+ years old, get something more modern". No way. I'm convinced that anything else I buy will just let me down. Besides, my GX has been paid off for 6 years. If it aint broke, don't fix it. I'm a Lexus believer! P.S. It tows like a champ too!

I just saw this video, and I own a 2005 GX470 with 170K miles on it (as of 2020). I've owned it since 2013 and have roamed backwood trails, driven up to high altitude ski resorts, and pushed the vast highways of Montana for close to 8 years now. The only maintenance I've had to deal with are oil changes, replacing the running lights, the alternator wearing out after 140k miles, and a few hail storms (which were quite unavoidable.) This review is spot on. Lot's of "big boy" features when it comes to towing, driving off road, and hosting passengers in a luxury setting. My buddies are still "wowed" by the GX when I take them on road trips or golf outings. The GPS is of vintage "2005" tech stock, but the console interface still plays well with the climate and audio controls. As a side note, the cassette deck slot can be converted to a nice mounting platform for modern day devices. Add to that the fact that it was ahead of it's time as far as furnishing additional outlets for multiple power connections (it even has an AV "fork" outlet in the back.) This vehicle has been a dream, and it still looks damn sexy! I owned a Lexus GS300 sedan before this and although I have been satisfied with both, the GX470 is king. A muscular 4.7 liter V8 on a mid-sized SUV chassis with: tow controls, 2nd gear start, air ride suspension preferences with rear axle height controls, toggle enabled traction assist., toggle controlled differential settings (4WD vs. AWD) with an additional stick that lets you dictate between 4 hi and 4 lo... there is even a switch that engages a downhill engine brake... all things you rarely see on any sort of mid-sized utility vehicle to this day without forking out 70-90k. It's like driving a modern semi truck packaged into a mid-sized SUV. This vehicle is still a rare bird and is worth a serious look... Top quality indeed! (Sound system is fabulous, in case you are worried about that!) :)

in response to "Joeys Cleaning Lady" and "Jonathan Nauck" This car does not have KDSS. It was an option in 2004, but they did not put a trailer hitch receiver in the bumper of the KDSS models. They did that configuration, because they were not sure how it would affect the integrity of the kit. I know, because I have had a 2004 w KDSS, since new. That option was on something like 1 out of 10 trucks, or less. The system works admirably. It corners more flatly on the roadways, and gives greater articulation of the opposing wheels in off-road driving. 145,000 miles and climbing.

I own a 08 Sport model. Was looking at a LR3 or LR4 (wins the style contest for sure), but really loved the LC's for reliability. I knew the LX's true form. So when I found out the GX was also a masked LC, well that settled it for me. It took months to find a decent Sport model. A good Land Cruiser was one of my "grail" vehicles, I now own one, and I LOVE it.

The BEST vehicle I've ever owned and I will be keeping this one until it is totally spent. Bought it in 2011 with 40K on it and today it still feels exactly the same. The only maintenance I've done was the 100K timing belt and had to replace the alternator last year. Other than that it's been PERFECT. I do all of my own maintenance, run synthetic oil, royal purple in the t-case and f/r differentials, and also drain/fill the tranny fluid every 30K. Great video!

I remember when I drove one of these. It's so inconspicuous looking you would never how good it actually is just by looking at it. The engine felt so strong and smooth and the interior was so good and luxurious and the ride was so good I was beyond impressed. It drives better then some new cars. I still want one only thing I would update are the tiny wheels. This car is a great used buy.

Perfect used buy and Lexus even warranties them used. I got a 100k warranty on top of the 141,000 miles our truck already had. I'm planning to build mine to overland. So far it's been absolute perfection. And best of all it's so easy to work on. Just like my SC400. My Acura ironically enough is more difficult to work on.

My thoughts, too. I don't want to own or drive any car or truck built like a tank. Damn, what a back-breaking ride :) And I once stood on the deck of an Abrams that was literally buried in mud right up to the bottom edge of the turret, so wet-ground off-roading can be a problem for tanks.
