In this episode of #TheTribuneInterview, the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh has serious implications for India, with the possibility of terror groups and anti-India elements gaining a foothold in the country, and immigration into north-Indian states increasing, thereby posing a demographic challenge. Also at stake is economic cooperation. Lt Gen KJ Singh, who has commanded a corps based in West Bengal, and Brig SS Ahluwalia, a decorated veteran of the 1971 Indo-Pak war who later commanded a brigade in the east, discuss the ongoing situation and the way ahead with The Tribune’s Editor-in-Chief, Jyoti Malhotra and Special Correspondent Vijay Mohan

We are very sorry that India has not given Independent to us. It is we earned it & India has helped only. Another the biggest problem of Indian foreign policy is that they are seeing Bangladesh through Sheikh Hasina and his party men narratives only. Whereas Indian civilsociety members and Media, Neither they have knowledge about what Bangladeshi people want nor they have any in depth socio-economic condition of Bangladesh. Now suddenly Indians worried about Bangladesh democracy. But you guys were sleeping when Hasina rigged 3 consecutive elections in Bangladesh, when she started tortured to oppositions, when she and her party men laundered the country. Same virus will go to India very soon.

India erred in not advising Sheik Hasina to respect Democratic norms. Or at least made an attempt to petition her to avoid human rights abuses. We should win the hearts and minds of the people of Bangladesh, but avoid giving the impression of a big brother. Ultimately it is up to the people of Bangladesh to elect their system of government and run their country the way their citizens decide. We should provide economic help, trade and engender amity between both our nations. A prosperous and stable Bangladesh is in the Interest of India.

India must occupy East Bengal as it was forcibly taken away in 1947 by the division of Bengal province but in 1971 by fault India attacked it to convert it to Bangladesh.India should merge it with West Bengal making it a Bengal state of India or taking the democratic pride as it is the largest democracy of the world,it should merge both Bengals to make greater Bangladesh. The 1971 Indian sacrifice of it's 5000 soldiers in 1971 wd be lauded heavily by the World.Converting Pakistani part of Bengal as Bangladesh and keeping the west Bengal with it is a big hypocrisy.

The coup was facilitated by the army even though it is trying hard to look "neutral" after the house has burned down. There are two main factions in the BD military--one with jihadi mentality and the other with secularist, moderate leanings. Almost all of BD weaponry is Chinese. Indian military is aware of this but still has had cordial relations with the BD counterparts. We don't need to build any new bridges with the BD army. Gen KJ Singh stating that India treats BD as a "gulam" is not just absurd and totally incorrect but unhelpful and disturbing coming from such a senior officer. As a native of Assam with deep family defence ties, I know what I'm saying. India has literally sacrificed its huge garments business to help BD rise and bent over backwards on many other issues. We are watching the unfolding scenario and will do what is best for India.

The biggest problem is that these big-shot generals live in a world of their own and ignore the reality on the ground. It is comforting for them to create an alternate reality that they want to live in instead of facing reality. Let us ask why the people in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Bangladesh do not like India. People in these countries once loved India and now they are turned against. Why? Isn’t the Indian foreign policy led by Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar ji and Ajit Doval ji a total failure? India had enjoyed an excellent relationship with Canada which is now rocking because of the policy and action failure. In Bangladesh’s case, it is a country infiltrated by RAW at every level and there is no way intelligence from any other country would have the slightest chance of penetrating. The unarmed peaceful student protest was organic. Hasina started killing them and playing games with them with her kangaroo court and thought the students were stupid and would be scared of her guns. She abducted thousands of students and killed thousands, but could not stop them. After over seventeen years of suppression, atrocious brutal killings, torture, and abductions the students lost their fear and started standing before the armed Hasina goons, police, and army barehand defying their authorities. One has to ask how desperate one has to become to get to that point. It is time for India to overhaul its foreign policy with the neighboring countries and start people to people-to-people diplomacy program and support the people instead of blindly supporting autocratic dictators. India should develop a win-win policy that supports democracies through transparent free and fair participatory elections. Instead of demonizing Jamat and Shibir start a dialogue with them. In Germany, they have a Christian Democratic Party. No one demonizes them because they have a religious name. India needs to move away from old geriatric thinking and move on with Gen Z generation participation and leadership that will develop people-to people relation in the neighborhood.

People to people contact always becomes a leftist affair where everyone in the world not aligned to left are blamed as demons. India is engaged with Bangladesh in startups, space, infrastructure, defense exercises and what not. Yes Modi and Hasina maybe autocratic - but they doggedly follow many development paths with tangible benefits, which is what South Asia needs.... not a good for nothing leadership.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s downfall was significantly influenced by Generation Z in Bangladesh. Key reasons include: 1. **Autocratic Rule**: Gen Z, exposed to global information, grew frustrated with Hasina’s autocratic governance and limited freedom of expression. 2. **Inequality**: Policies favoring the elite and the controversial job-quota system widened social inequalities, frustrating the youth. 3. **Economic Challenges**: Despite economic growth, many young people struggled to find stable, well-paying jobs, fueling discontent. 4. **Protests and Crackdowns**: Harsh crackdowns on protests, including police brutality, galvanized the youth against Hasina’s administration. 5. **Disconnect from Youth**: Hasina’s administration was seen as disconnected from the younger generation’s aspirations and needs. These factors led to a powerful Gen Z movement, ultimately forcing Hasina to resign and flee the country.

Respect to Mr. KJ Singh and The Tribune for this program. I strongly disagree with Mr. Alu, who blindly supports the Hasina regime without even mentioning the genocide she has committed-killing, kidnapping, extrajudicial killings, and denying an entire generation under 34 the right to vote. This is a mass killing of democracy. It’s really disappointing that Mr. Alu didn't mention a single point about Hasina's forces killing more than 400 people on-site with her own police force. Mr. Alu also wrongly accused BNP and Jamaat of leading the protests, when in fact they were initiated by our Generation Z students, and the interim government is still being led by them. This interim government, of course, needs to negotiate with other political parties, as the current challenges involve maintaining stable law and order. However, India is still blindly supporting Hasina rather than the people of Bangladesh and their thoughts and beliefs. Mr. Singh is a talented speaker, and I would like to share these thoughts with Mr. Modi. We are neighbors of India, and we want solidarity and a close alliance with India. Greetings from Bangladesh. 🇧🇩

India being the largest democracy and regional super power should have allowed democracy to develop in Bangladesh. Same thing will happen in India if it doesn't allow the young adults to vote for electing their leaders. The friendship should be among peoples and not individual party or person. If you don’t accept that the Bangladesh uprising is completely homegrown, caused by a long experience of brutal autocracy, I think you are starting from a false premise and your conclusions will necessarily be flawed. Yes, all neighbors are watching carefully to see if they can derive a strategic advantage, but no neighbor had the agency to engender the movement, or even influence its course. This is as wrong as positing that the French Revolution was caused by some external interest.

The inflation rate was almost 12% for the last 3 years.Nobody can say anything or can criticise Hasina govt.If anyone do they will be harassed by false criminal case or kidnapped. Students anti discrimination quota reform movement was non violent. But Hasina Govt. wanted to stop the movement by force. As per UNO office about 650 people were killed in mass killing by police and BGB forces. This mass killing striked the every conscientious people and they joined in Students' movement. This upsurge of mass people compelled Hasina to step down. Unfortunately the participants what they said is totally baseless and far from reality.People expect the objective and factual analysis from senior and experienced persons. If they give baseless and malicious expression, this discussion is misuse of time. By this this senior citizens will lose respect from the young generation. Because young generation can realise that this seniors are telling lies to the young generation.

Not Pakistan, Bangladesh, but Bangladesh will become New Pakistan. When Sheikh Mujib was leading the political movement in collaboration with India, Bengalis in the then Pakistani army also supported the movement in their own way. Major Ziaur Rehman killed his commanding officer, seized the Chittagong radio station and announced the formation of independent Bangladesh in March 1971. At that time, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was in the jail of Pakistan. So Bangladesh army considers itself as the founder and liberator of Bangladesh. On the other hand, Mujibur Rahman's party, along with its own militant group Mukti Bahini, considers itself the liberator of Bangladesh. This is a new version of Sunni-Shia conflict in secular terms. After the assassination of the Mujib family, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party or BNP tried to destroy Mujib's legacy and tore down his statues. Major Ziaur Rahman was now the General and President of Bangladesh and founded the BNP. Jamiat-e-Islami naturally became its ally because it is the ally of the British army left in Pakistan. When Awami League came back to power, it banned BNP and hanged Jamiat leaders. After the current change, Bangladeshis look up to generals as Pakistanis used to welcome generals in different eras. Now Bangladeshi generals will collect properties like Pakistani generals and use Bengali politicians as puppets. India now has an old enemy in the west, a bigger enemy in the north and a new enemy in the east. The only route to India is the Indian Ocean. Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are not the common community but mainly those who got minority quota under Hasina Sheikh. But India will try to use this as an excuse to push Hasina Sheikh back to Bangladesh. There is a serious threat of civil war. It looks like now Bangladesh may turn into new Pakistan version 2.

Indians should understand why these students or the people of Bangladesh wanted to get her out of power?? Hasina is a dictator and the way she killed the students was so cruel and the way the students were tortured was against humanity. What she did is against any democracy. Don’t underestimate the students… these students are very intellectual and they know their history very well and these students were not with any party. I don’t agree what nonsense he is talking about?? Don’t say anything that u really don’t know.

We appreciate your caption. Please remember that Indian foreign relations have changed so much since 1971. If you would see how countries shifted sides during WWII. Even more if you see how enemies turned friends and friends to enemies over time like China and Japan in regard to USA. The narrative of India helped Bangladesh in 1971 is no more effective unless both countries renew ties periodically in a manner that works. Big brotherly attitude and unequal treatment especially hurting Bangladesh democracy like recent past wouldn’t work for sure. India already lost trust and must find ways to fix it.

The main question is why does Modi do nothing but sleeping and dreaming about another foreign trip. What all these foreign trips have done for India? Who is supporting India today? A totally anti-Indian Government has taken over Bangladesh but Modi will do nothing except helping Adani. Do we need such an useless and worthless Prime minister? I hope RSS will remove him as soon as possible. I support both BJP and RSS but I now hate Modi.

As a Bangladeshi, I think Gen. Singh has a more nuanced understanding of Bangladesh and what happened here recently. None of us had any idea that things would turn out like this. If anything is responsible for this situation it's our ex-pm Hasina's stubbornness. People had a general dislike towards but not to the point that they would be out protesting against her. All the dislikeable things aside like free and open elections, and the right to freedom of speech if she had been open to listening to the students at the right time we would have a different situation. India needs to come out of the radical Islamist narrative. The number of people who go to India for travel and treatment purposes is unlike any other nationalities. There are extremists on both sides but I think are in the minority.
