End is only 30min difference between east and west if we maintain two timezone. Instead of two timezone, we can start east states 30min early school, office etc. even Most of Mumbai schools are running in shift. It would not make any impact as its state wide approach. Now days we are in office upto 8pm. In TN, many place, Farmer labours are working from 6am to 11am due to hot climate. In nutshell, start work 30 min early in east side and leave 30 min early ( Possible only in Govt Office). Private sector most of time 7/8 pm even late only :-). Sleeping habit is based on area and work culture. Village side people will start to sleep around 9:30pm... City side...all we know!!!:-) Only very few sector will get impact like Stock Market. those needs to follow current office hrs instead of early 30 min.

Scientist's theoretical number may look interesting but will not result in great saving. In general human beings will automatically shift their work timings based on day lights you don't need a time zone to drive that. Even nowadays institutional timings are flexible and adjusted to accommodate this. My school 40 years back adopted this. Assume if we have two time zones we will spend trillions of dollars in software and other systems for making it to work and sync properly. People are spending useless nights in Social media and non productive work first let us all come out of that and save resources and be healthy. If everyone goes to sleep by 10pm and get up at sunrise we will have the same results if theorists are right. Change is important but we should know what to change. Thanks for reading.

China despite being as wide as US follows only one timezone instead of 4. India is far better on this aspect. If changing it from 5:30 + GMT to 6:00 makes country save money that can be considered for about a year and depending on how it works it can be changed permanently. Also NE states are always given the least importance than states like Gujarat in terms of growth and economic development. They should subsidize the rates that people pay for electricity in the NE states.

I think government don't want to change the timezone to GMT+6.30 bcs it may create a confusion and feel to northeast people that Northeast doesn't belongs to be a part of india when proper explanation failed to reach the masses..and the borders are too complicated to let them think like that by creating Northwest to different time zone!!! But it will be better if they could change that to 6..all over India... And again it may create confusion all over the country for a little period of time!! But that's fine instead of loosing crores of money for no reason

One of the major problems in having a two or more time zones in India is travelling. Indian Railways will have to bear more pressure and workload due to change in time zones and it will also cause accidents as the trains travel in different time zones. Nonetheless, it's high time that we need different time zone for various reasons like improving health and livelihood of citizens, prevention of ecological damage and resource exploitation, etc.,

A very interesting topic. Thanks for your efforts in explaining it to us. Australia does have different time zones, especially the eastern cities such as Sydney, melbourne. they follow something known as Daylight savings. But Brisbane doesn’t follow it. I am assuming it could be due to economic reasons as Brisbane is always sunny and they don’t need to change their clocks during winter and summer season.
