With the threat from China mounting, and Russia in the grip of war, India needs friends - and the democracies of the West are the obvious candidates. But this relationship is complicated - overshadowed by the legacy of colonialism, suspicions of Western double standards, and concerns in the West that the India of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is losing its commitment to liberal democratic values.
In the third and final part of “India’s Choice,” a special series on the geopolitical dilemmas facing India, DW’s Richard Walker explains how the West is trying to recruit India for a democratic pushback against authoritarian China - and why there are lingering doubts on both sides about how close the relationship can get.
Featuring interviews with Jay Panda, Vice President of India’s ruling BJP, Shashi Tharoor of the opposition Congress, Hartosh Singh Bal of The Caravan Magazine, former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Tobias Lindner, Minister of State in the German Foreign Office, Lisa Curtis, former Senior Director, US National Security Council, and Garima Mohan of the German Marshall Fund.

I am an American and I believe the last thing the west should do is tell India how to handle it's domestic affairs. India is a very important country culturally and historically and the way they deal with their affairs is still much better than places like China. Leave this great nation alone and lets cultivate stronger relationships with the largest democracy in the world

@@cherubimcherubim9515 Well there is very little scope for moral posturing in International relations. Whatever moral posturing you see by an X,Y,Z country it is done after they have taken care of their interests at hand! US foreign policy is practical, India's policy is whimsical. Their is no national policy per se in India where it is decided by the whims of an individual! That's why we keep getting stabbed in the back. Like Pakistan's response after Vajpayee's Lahore bus service and China's response to India in last few years after Modi's too much Appeasement. Such accidents don't happen to US because they will first look at their interests unlike India which also has an element of Appeasement to its foreign policy! Well India since cannot take a stand on any issue and tries to appease everyone, it is trying to appease the West by being in QUAD and also trying to appease China by being in BRICS!!

They will soon realise why the Indian government is trying to curb islamism in India. Once Europeam towns start becoming no go areas for their own people things will flip and India will be looked at as a goto place for policy implementation. That time is not too far! Let the infestation spread a little more and a little deeper into Europe. All the phony moral high ground they are trying to project will go down the drain. It has already begun in Austria , Denmark and Poland. Also France to some extent. The days of consolidation and nativist uprising are not too far especially with the recession looming around the corner.

@@whitesky8013 I don't believe India will have that issue anymore, luckily they're becoming a major asset for the west. They only need to show more strength in their politics, they're not a weak country they once were. Aside from that unfortunately with India's ties to Russia modern weapons systems from the west are very unlikely to ever come due to security concerns. Even in NATO not all countries are able to buy the most advanced weapons systems from America. The best thing America can do is send aid for specific weapons systems development and sell other's that have lower security concerns directly to them. This will boost their defense industry with American assistance with less security risks for America.

Don't delude yourself thinking India will be a leverage. India is playing both sides of the field, purely for it's own self interest just as China has all these years. Now the world has realized it too late. All you have to do is listen carefully what Indian government mouthpieces are saying and look closely at their action. Once India builds up it's economy and military power just as China has done, it will be just another country like China. Only difference is instead of a communist country, it will be a fascist country under the thin disguise of Hindu nationalism. Then the world would end up having to deal with threats from Russia, China and India. Imagine the future of the world if these three decides to join forces.

A lot of thanks to all the people who explained me why India is still a less economical power than China. I think that the fact till the 90 s India had a socialist economy is one of the most important reasons why India is less developed than China. Another reason must be the way they calculate the G D P. By the way: before the 90 s it was a strict socialist economy? I mean competition was forbidden???? Initiative was discouraged by the government??? Everything was controlled by the state? I was born in a socialist country; in the 50 s even some sciences were prohibited for the reason they contradict the Marxist dogma.
@gireeshgprasad7589
@gireeshgprasad7589 2 жыл бұрын
I was born in the 90s, so I don't have any first hand experience of the economy from before liberalization. From what I have read, the 50s, 60s, and 70s can be classified as "Nehruvian socialism" characterized by soviet style five year plans guiding the economic agenda, dominant government control of services and utilities, and close to no competition. Focus was on improving primary sectors such as agriculture, irrigation, energy generation, poverty alleviation, basic healthcare etc. Some legacy private businesses such as the Tata group did exist, but they worked in conjugation with govt plans. As the 80s rolled around, with the USSR struggling with it's own economy, India took baby steps in liberalization by eliminating price controls. Focus was on expanding profitable economic sectors like agriculture, modernizing industrial technology, and controlling population growth. Due to elimination of price controls there were opportunities for private businesses, but you still had to get licenses from the govt to open a business, and this was cumbersome and mired in red tape. 1991 was a shock for the Indian economy and there was a severe forex crunch and currency depreciation. India had to pledge most of its gold reserves and get an IMF bailout. The shock prompted swift efforts at liberalization with deregulating markets, reducing tariffs and taxes, and measures to attract foreign investment. Results started showing quickly, and this promoted further liberalization by divesting from govt owned businesses. This is the period when a lot of private businesses sprung up. The turn of the century saw increased foreign investment and globalization. Private businesses blossomed and the economy grew rapidly. Five year plans officially ended in 2017. However, the process of liberalization is still ongoing. The coal industry was opened up for the private sector as recently as 2015, and the govt sold off state owned airlines only this year. The govt still operates a lot of businesses that are usually privately owned in the liberalized economies of the west. For example, most utility services - power, water & sewage, railways, some transportation, shipyards, power plants, banks, insurance, a telecom company, etc. There are plans to divest from some of these over time.

Very legitimate concerns about the US alliances track record. I suspect there will be increasing pressure for India do so, since it is unlikely the US will share the technology that India needs to pose a credible deterrence to China and Pakistan. I know other western nations are sharing technology, so it might not be as critical. India understandably wants technology transfer agreements to be able to manufacture their own weapons. This is the real problem, and it is a problem of trust. With the S-400 for instance, India would never be approved to buy the F-35, much less any technology transfer.

Agree on most parts. TBH F-35 was never on the cards for Indian air force. We are developing our own AMCA 5th gen fighter. We went for S400 because at the moment there is no alternative to it to take out cruise missiles and jets - in the price we bought it for and in such a short duration. It acts as a deterrence against combined Pakistan and China - especially at the time our fighter jets acquisition program got delayed by a few years.

Don't make statements that are laughable! India already attacked Pakistan's terror camps and came home without any detection by Chinese or American equipment in Pakistan. China has been clobbered in the high Himalayas even though we lost 20 soldiers. India has credible deterrence against the Chinese. With equipment from France and some from the US now, India now has greater capability for the air and the sea. All technologies that are not transferred will be developed in India. It's a question of time. So, it is helpful for the latest equipment but not absolutely essential for the defence of India.

There really isn't anything wrong with criticizing other democracies, but at the same time it's very hurtful as an Indian to see that the challenges that our democracy faces is simply ignored. India is far more diverse than any Western counterpart in terms of language, culture, race, geography and yes, religion. This makes it extremely challenging to preserve the heterogeneous nature of it, frankly it's an achievement in itself that India has started unified especially for a country that was left deviated after the colonial era. I know we have a long way to go, but we have come a really really long way yet not once have I heard any praise for that!

I noticed it but somehow felt very cute. I think they want the viewers to understand that how the US & European delegates perceive India and only construct the narrative that suits their interests best and how its own governing leaders perceive India in grim reality in its internal affairs and diversity. The Central/Federal Government deals each indian state with different politics, different agendas, different perspectives, different views. Solutions for one state doesn’t work in other states. India has 22 official languages with English being de facto language and Hindi being widely spoken. Each state has its own minority language and that makes around more than 700 languages used across the country. Its like dealing people from 25 countries and maintaining law and order with freedom of speech, free trade principles all while upholding Democracy. Everyone follows their own religions and beliefs. The only thing every person regardless of religion, caste, language, culture, festivals, food, traditions, beliefs and practices agrees on is “INDIA”. That’s “Unity in Diversity” is the only thing that’s driving this nation of 1.4 billion people. Just like Even indians cant understand other indians properly, let alone any western nation would perfectly understands This complex Giant. I would agree westerners listen more talk less and Indians talk more listen less .

Very good presentation. I was hooked. There is no way India will become authoritarian like China. No chance Democracy will be wiped out like Hong Kong. Indians are emotional, unpredictable and not disciplined at all. Tough decisions must be made for the country to change for the better. The country is a huge and very complicated mess because of it's past. Old ways must be demolished to make way for better economic health. Human value is low in the country because of the dense population of young competitive people wanting a good living. I feel this government is trying to unclog arteries of a very sick country that has been through a lot. Something that should have been done waaay back in the 90s.

As an Indian, I have to say is that we have to become strong both economically & militarily. Yes we are at a significant disadvantage against China, but we have significant military capabilities. China knows that too. A war will be detrimental to both countries. We will see minor incursions, but a full escalation is a no go. Assured mutual destruction will avoid any major collusion

@@online3010 In geopolitics there are no permanent friends & enemies. Alliances will be made, partnerships will be forged. My point being, instead of reliance on foreign partners for own defence, it's imperative that India becomes self reliant in its own right. In a potential conflict with a super power like China, India have to be strong enough to respond in kind. Only then other western or Russians will step in with additional aid

@@Subhit30jan I disagree, alliances can be positioned with mutual survival in a democratic value. New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Malta, Cyprus, Portugal, Canada and UK can be seen as an argument that greater international relationships help mutual success. After WW2 America became the leader of a greater multi-state collaborator, includes France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Israel, UAE, Kuwait, South Korea, Taiwan 🇹🇼, Japan and Philippines. I might have missed a couple. India is more diverse in languages than all these countries I have included 😃. India would be better as a strong leader in a multi pole world than an individual outside a rule based multi-polar system. It is up to Indian 🇮🇳 democratic system to choose that. I hope they make the hard choice that makes the population achieve great lives

@@online3010 We can have differences of opinion. I respect yours. From my point of view, India wants to be a piller in this multipolar world. So far non alignment has helped India to avoid any unnecessary conflicts. We don't know what future holds, geopolitics is a game of chess. One have to keep playing his hand as per his own game plan, but has to be flexible enough to prepare for all eventualities.

How are concerns of India's internal issues related to India's geopolitical ambitions?
@artman12

Because some Westerners still have the colonial mentality that they still rule India like during the times of the British empire and should therefore interfere in India’s internal matters.

@@alandworsky8926 No, it’s not. Only the hypocrite Western countries feel the need to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs due to colonial hangover. We see how you all where moaning during the US Presidential elections saying that Russia influenced American voters. What if the Indian government supported and aided Scottish independence, condemned EU’s treatment of immigrants or supported the anti-vax protestors in Canada? That will be treated as a breach of sovereignty.

He gets paid to compare India to China. Part of carrots and stick diplomacy by the West. He is part of the stick, or more precisely, the setup for using the stick. Westerners have truly mastered the art of Hybrid warfare, to the point that they wage hybrid wars even on countries they ostensibly support (like India).
