I was at a camp a couple years ago, and the largest cabin(more like a lodge) had a central vacuum system. When we helped clean up, I was totally flabbergasted, "Why and how is the wall a vacuum??" My mind was blown by such a thing.

Glad an old boy on a Mac forum I'm on mentioned this! I am currently to'ally redoing an old house, down to studs now, so will definitely put central vaccum sweep in!

@Bigrignohio Great point! Yes that could be an issue. I'm a huge believer in Sealed Combustion applainces so the two furnaces in this house are sealed combustion with no chance of backdrafting. The Fireplace is sealed gas combustion, the tankless water heater is mounted outside. I don't have any appliances that can backdraft. BUT, you are correct that a makeup air would need to be in place if you did have atmospherically vented appliances. Matt

They are amazing and the air quality management system does improve. A must for hardwood, laminate, tile, and vinyl floors. 😀

Not for carpet?

@windsorwolf7162 3 жыл бұрын
@@Poetry4Peace Yes, you can use one for carpet. Just need either a motorized head (seen commonly on canister vacuums) or an air turbine one like mine. I have a Turbocat head and it does okay on carpet.

@christoobsdkb The Dyson's are very nice, but they rely on a HEPA filter to ensure that dust isn't blown into your house. Where a filter exists there is some chance it'll clog, or not get replaced properly, etc. The beauty of these central vacs is that they exhaust outside so there is ZERO chance of a filter failure or other issues that might cause dust to be blown into the house. Also, the Dyson is very powerful but the motor on the Central Vac is more than twice as powerful. Thanks, Matt

Does a central vacuum system like this need a dedicated breaker in the panel to run? 30 amps is a lot of current.

Wow, great video Matt!! You explain the benefits and features very well. I am a big fan of central vacuums myself. I think every home should have one. I've never seen a vacuum like the one in this video. It looks like a serious machine! 240V with dual exhaust! Awesome!!

My grandparents had one in their house since before I was born. My brother said it had always been there since they bought it in '86. I never once saw them use it though. I think they had the motor unit uninstalled at some point. I just used to lift the flaps up because I thought it was fascinating there was a vacuum in the walls.

Im with you! This Is our Second house with a Central VAcuum. Have had a Central Vacuum for 33 years. My wife loves it. We have a 2240sqft ranch, we have 8 outlets, 4 In basement, even one In my workshop & of course in the garage.....Jim PS.....I installed the Second unit, it was the easiest install of a product that I never installed. Hardest thing was to Find The 10’ long 2” pipe, but i did Find it At an electrical supply.

@lexichronicle2 Also, blockages have more to do with proper installation than with the suction of the unit. Even weaker systems (entry-level CVS units draw around 10 amps at 110 volts) shouldn't clog if properly installed with the right types of fittings. This unit is made for larger homes, so you're right about compensating for friction loss in the tubing, but this is actually negligible until you get into very large installations.

@lexichronicle2 I have the same system...it actually runs on 110, and while operating draws only a little over 20 amps. Just enough to require a 30 amp dedicated circuit.

The only issue about pushing the air outside is that it causes negative pressure inside the house which draws outside air back into the inside which could introduce some of that dust back in along with pollen and other things. Central vacuums are amazing though especially in their ease of use and quietness as well as power. They also dont cause all the heat inside the house that a normal vacuum would produce from running.

I see high end houses being built and CV are never installed. I have always installed CV in my homes and our current build we are installing one. Could not imagine a home without one. It’s a no brainer. They aren’t that expensive. Saves your back.

These are very easily installed in existing houses without ripping walls out, even if you’re not remodeling you can have one installed for the same cost.

A question, with the tighter homes being built today do you have any concerns with back-drafting water heaters/furnaces/fireplaces when a central vacuum system is in use? For larger homes it probably would not be a problem as even minimal infiltration over such large areas would provide sufficient air. For smaller homes natural ACH levels may not be enough.

Any thoughts on a central vac system versus a Dyson? I have been very impressed with Dysons ability to build a vacuum that puts out "clean" air, but was curious how it would compare to a central vac system like the one shown in the video.

so i plan in getting one?, but i am going to have to put it into my house. with me not installing it in a new house, could i still put in the electric inlets? or would i have to get the ones where you would have to plug it into a wall outlet to power the motor in the brush head. Thanks!

Matt, thanks for all your videos. My husband and I are in the beginning stages of building a house, and your videos have been immensely helpful. We are considering a central vac, but curious to get your current opinion since this video is over 10 years old. Are you installing these very often, and do you still recommend them? Thanks again for all the helpful content you provide!

I know this is a year late but absolutely go for a central vac if you haven't yet. Easier to use, more versatile, more powerful, more quieter, and better filtering than ANY portable vacuum on the market. Best of all, they add value to the home!
