@@leavewe Solid stone is expensive the larger the house gets, and unlike you guys over there, we actually have space to build big houses.
@SCComega
@SCComega 4 жыл бұрын
@@leavewe american houses are cheaper to build, have better insulation values, tend to use lower environment impact supplies (new-growth farmed pine, fiberglass bat, PVC siding), at the expense of longevity. (most people expect to sell off their home or their children to, they're not multi-generation investments) There's ultimately a lot of cultural differences at play. Part of looking for lower-cost construction materials and methods also comes down to the culture of if you're even the least bit successful, and you don't live in the most major of cities, you should get a house for yourself by the time you're in your 30's. Americans also on average expect a larger sized house than europeans do, for whatever cultural reason. And that's just with the usual stilt based construction method, a lot of new building in the US is transitioning to SIPS (Self-insulated panel structures) which slot together like legoes (while also providing still further superior insulation values), or aerocrete, which as the name suggests, is a high air-ratio concrete mix that lowers the cost and brings the insulation values up vs standard concrete mixes. Generally speaking, any american house is designed with a 100 year service life in mind, after which it is expected to be torn down and replaced. They can last longer than that if taken care of, but most of the time, that's what the architect designs them in mind for.
@cjeam9199
@cjeam9199 4 жыл бұрын
SCComega I’ve significant doubts about both the insulation and build environmental impact being less. From everything I’ve heard European building codes regarding energy are much more stringent, and that certainly reflects in the energy consumption even acknowledging that US houses are larger. Them being larger works against them for build impacts, as does decreased longevity.
@SCComega
@SCComega 4 жыл бұрын
@@cjeam9199 You have to keep in mind the environmental impact of the resources themselves, and the energy that goes into them. Farmed pine is far more environmentally friendly than farming hardwoods that are used in european homes (given there's faster turnaround and they use less energy to grow), which make up most of the building. PVC is made as a by-product of oil refining (which is obviously happening anyway) And very little is actually used as it's the skin of the house. Compare brick, which requires both the initial mining of the clay, forming, and firing. When you look at insulation, you need to understand just how effective fiberglass bat is for the cost, and how little energy is required for it's formation. (hence why it's so cost efficient) And, while the size of a house matters, so too do the insulation standards, and much of the US has building codes which mandate double the insulation values versus much of europe.

@@chabka34 Well for one thing, they're a lot quieter than most portable vacuums, as you usually only hear the suction from the vacuum (plus the powerhead if you choose to use one), they can hold a lot more dirt than most portable vacs, and with good care and very occasional maintenance, they can last for decades. I recommend doing some research on them, they're quite neat machines and good investments for your home.

Have had central vacs as a child and adult so probably 35 years of experience and never a clog. They are amazing if you have pets. We have a hybrid system which has a mix of "hide a hose" outlets and regular wall outlets like those featured in the video. The Hide a Hose outlets are those where the hose gets sucked back into the tubing in the wall. This alleviates the need to lug a hose from outlet to outlet. The standard outlets are only used in areas with wall to wall carpeting which for us, is just the 2nd floor bedrooms.

TIP use a shopvac when your main unit dies. They are 10x more powerful and some are quiet and exhaust can be routed outside if need and use a really good filter

Great video but just my two cents.... Had two homes over the last decade with these systems in them. They give trouble too often and when they clog they can be a pain to sort. For the price of these systems you could afford a decent make vacuum cleaner on each level of your home.

Blaine Bugaski. Starting in 1995 he had a show called The House Doctor on HGTV. He was also on Good Morning America as their home improvement editor. In 1999 He had a weekly home improvement show on TV called House Calls. Then in the early 2000s lost track of him. Thanks for your comment.

@@normangebhardt2092 No kidding. Most of his videos look to be post-2010 as far as I can tell based upon the vehicles. People are thinking they are from the 90s or early 2000s but I don't think that is the case.

Guessing you haven't owned a central vacuum. They're more convenient, so much quieter, they add value to your home, and they do wonders for people with allergies. Plus only needing to change the bag or empty the bin once or twice a year is awesome.
