He's definitely lied on a few occasions (just like everyone else) but I don't understand why exactly you would call him a thief when it was an handball and he didn't fully admit that it shouldn't have been a goal. What he did is known as "unsportsmanship" or "unfair play." Secondly, I assume he didn't feel sorry during that game as his main focus was on winning and not necessarily caring about making mistakes. He was sorry after being criticized by the media and the Irish people so felt compelled to raise the matter and apologize for it. You don't have to believe him. He may not have felt guilty or made a real apology, but I believe those death threats and the negative media reactions were real and definitely haunted him to this day.

So, France found themselves in a playoff game against Ireland to even qualify - something that the French likely didn’t anticipate. Regardless, France managed to win the first game in Ireland to the tune of 1-0. And in the return leg in Paris, the Irish were beating France by 1-0 until the Thierry Henry handball happened. Essentially, Henry prevented the ball from going out for a goal kick and played through an assist for France to score. They could’ve had a penalty shootout and eventually lose to ireland.
