Why is a Referendum needed? | Learning with From the Heart

The Uluru Statement from the Heart calls for A Voice to Parliament to be enshrined in the Australian Constitution, which can only occur through a Referendum, for three major reasons;
1. The Voice to Parliament would, pending a successful Referendum, be protected in the supreme law of our Nation, protected from changes in Government, Political Party Leadership and Ideology.
2. Because the Constitution can only be changed through a Referendum, which requires a double majority (both a national majority across the states and territories and the majority of voters in at least 4 out of the 6 States), holding a Referendum means the decision to enshrine a Voice to Parliament is a decision for the people of Australia through a vote.
3. A Referendum is symbolic of the invitation from First Nation Australians to the rest of Australia to work together on redefining our National Identity.
