How do you keep the end of the spray foam gun from accumulating dried foam?

What a dream attic - that attic is taller than my entire house. Venting out a soffit isn’t good as well as the other things you mention.

Without watching it just think attics can get upwards of 130 degrees and heat seeks cold. Make the attic air separate from the house air

Great Comment! Congratulations! Here's another important reason to stop the attic environment from trespassing into your living space: Indoor Air Quality. Thanks for commenting!

Just starting mine, I pulled out several trash bags full of old, mottled, dirty white fiberglas batts. And that's just for one small area. There won't be a huge amount of ceiling penetrations since there's no can lighting, no ceiling fans, not even any bath vents (an issue for another day ... ) The roof pitch is so steep, I can't identify where the soffits are/can't see where outside air comes in. They all seem to be below my field of vision, down below the ceiling level. House is 80+ years old, with 3/4" hardwood walls and ceilings (tongue and groove, with wallpaper finish). So I have not yet identified the usual top plate issues modern houses have with their drywall and whatnot. I've gotta get new electric run everywhere, or as much as I can reach, before sealing and re-insulating.

Thanks for watching and sharing your experience! Here's a hack to help find those hidden soffit vents: Cup you hand over your headlight, so it's dark. Look for light entering the attic out along the eaves... The light will indicate where each soffit vent is located. You've got this!

@@birdfamilyinsulation5411 I've been up there in the dark attic (during daytime) and now believe soffits are not vented. The roof has gable end vents and some roof vents. Overall it performs well: There's no hint of mold or other issues whatsoever. From what I can tell, inside the attic the roof edges are essentially open to the backside of the exterior walls. For example, when running new Romex to upstairs rooms, after getting the new cable up to the attic could drop it down behind the room's wall and into the wall cavity without needing to go into the top plate. You have the usual breathing space behind the brick, and that airflow can travel up and out of the attic. This does mean that the exterior isn't sealed in any modern sense of the word, and insulation gets dirty, but there's enough constant airflow to prevent mold. Old paper up there dried out, it didn't "dissolve." With the old insulation pulled out, I added work lights, I'm working on finishing installing radiant barrier, will add an additional HVAC register vent to a dormer, I need to tackle the rest of the wiring up there, seal up a few things, seal off the remnants of the old chimneys if I can, then re-insulate ... all before winter comes back!
