There is a lot of truth to that, but I think Michael just hit the nail on the head without realizing it. I think a lot of Intrigue stems from the fact that the mafia had to be strategically addressed by the highest level of government, but even they struggled to gain control for a very long time. And the longer it took, the more people looked at the mafia as an equally powerful entity, which persuaded society to be a little more lenient of what the mafia did.. and with leniency, comes acceptance.. and with acceptance, comes understanding.. and with understanding, comes normality, and people generally have no fear in response to normality.

Mr. Franzese, I believe that the human component is why the Italian mafia became more popular than others. Of course, Hollywood helps a lot as well. There’s something about the image of guys with suits, Italian accent, and the fact that outside of being essentially criminals, they were family people, full of love for their family, friends and neighbors. Power and money are attractive too, but the widespread popularity has to do with the human side of it. With all their faults, these guys were/are likeable characters, and for most people they are perceived as cleanly dressed guys with character and family values, than as gangsters and criminals…

In my opinion, the fascination with the mafia is based on its success, its longevity and its cohesion. The loyalty of its members not to cooperate with the police, even under the threat of serious consequences. It's not really about whether they are criminals or not. the mafia started out as a small, unorganized group during prohibition and expanded its power practically worldwide, and this will to succeed fascinates people. The mafia today, as far as I know, is active in many business sectors, most of which are completely legal, and operates practically without anyone actually realizing it. You could almost call it a kind of deep state in the economy. Thanks for your videos Michael.

My fascination with the mob is because my Dad use to tell me and my family stories about the mob in Detroit, riding around the area where he grew up, in long black limousines. It was called the Oakwood area back in the 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s. One story was a the limousine pulled up down the street and a guys got out and drug out some man, and started beating him. His Italian mother came running out begging them “please don’t kill my son, please don’t kill my son”. At that point they stopped and told the guy your mom just saved your life. But eventually someone rode by his house and shot him as he stood in the doorway. My Dad remembered the street beating. There were other stories too. My Dad is now with the Lord and I miss him so much. Best father anyone could ask for. ❤️✝️

I grew up not knowing city life and the things that frequently happened. So started the interest for me In mob stories. Over the years as I read up on all I could find, I realized that your cities were far safer with you there functioning in mob life, then our home was with police. You had moral standards. The long-term romance between the public and the mafia, I think, is what colorful lives some of you lived and the glamor. Michael, your draw is the dynamics of your life. Everybody loves the fact that you give good old Uncle Sam, who robs us legally through taxation, a gut punch with your ingenious plan to steal taxes on every gallon of gas producing millions of dollars a week. So we see you as a modern-day Robin Hood and a hero of the people. Al Capone was the same by using a different means. During the Great Depression, he decided to open up a soup kitchen for the little guy to garner a good image in the public. Capone’s soup kitchen served breakfast, lunch, and dinner to an average of 2,200 Chicagoans daily. That action alone put Al up on a pedestal to be remembered for this day that is the core of his legacy to this very day.

I think the allure of the Mafia is the confluence of the Italian culture, family, tradition, the high standards of masculinity and doing what's right then you add in the politics of the families and the street. The mafia is tolerated and even admired with the low level rackets. The extreme violence, crimes against kids and women and the hard drugs are where people turn deeply against groups which is why the Latin American cartles and gangs get zero love from anyone.

For most of us everyday life is boring, so a movie about an historical figure, a celebrity, a gangster, a sports star, a military legend or an historical figure is a window into a far more incredible life than what we're living. If you ask most any long-time resident of Las Vegas, regardless of what walk of life they're from, they will tell you that the Strip as a whole ran better when the Mob or Outfit was in charge. I once asked a table dealer about how it was back in the day; he explained that back then, everybody made money. As long as you didn't steal from the powers-that-were, one could make a really nice living. Nowadays, the only ones that make any real money are the big corporations that, by and large, run most of the casinos and resorts. Back then, crime and homelessness hardly existed on or near the Strip, and no one would dare to try anything like a robbery or other bad acts in or around any of the resorts for fear of the consequences of such actions. While the town has grown exponentially since the late 1980s/early 1990s, to a point where it would be too big for the Mob to handle, without the Mob, it would never have existed in the first place. Old timers here yearn for the days when parking was free of charge and buffets were abundant, inexpensive, and served good food, things that were taken for granted when the Mob was in charge.

Without a doubt, the appeal lies in the entertainment aspect of organized-crime life as portrayed and glamorized in the movies, starting in the 1920s with "Little Caesar," "The public Enemy," and "Scarface", right up to The Godfather, Goodfellas, the Untouchables in the 1970s -- and later, on TV, "The Sopranos," "Boardwalk Empire," and others. At the same time, the American press headlined almost everything the Mob did, glamorizing events like the famous Appalachian meeting of the bosses. In short, we are programmed to associate organized crime with entertainment. I don't think it's more complicated than that. People enjoy stories about folks who do daring things the rest of us wouldn't have the nerve to do, even if what they do is evil. Evil can be fun, which is also why horror movies are so popular.

I would never ask anyone that question , and if I felt uncomfortable around someone as if I feared for my life, I either chose to be there or I’d not be there and I don’t ask questions like that, it’s not fascinating to me. Making money getting ahead of the game, I can see that purpose, getting high smoking weed loving the people who enabled me to feel good doing it, and the chances they take so I could do it , I loved those guys And I still do All they did So I could smoke some weed feel good Love those guys I used to think to myself as I was sitting there stoned listening to my radio stoned on some good weed Those were the days. I was a criminal and I knew it was loud to be and enjoyed contributing to it as well and loving the people who enabled me to be a kart if it as well. I was a criminal I knew it and I did it anyway That’s the chance I take it anyone takes. Can’t do the time Don’t do the crime And number one above all Be smart enough not to get caught at it as well

Interesting, possibly the most popular movies (one of them anyyway) is about the mob - The Godfather. And possibly the greatest tv show ever- The Sopranos, is about the mob.

It’s true, we loved Tony Soprano but he was not a good guy. But he could be. But he really wasn’t. lol 😂whyyyyy did we like him so much????? As a woman looking from the outside in they seemed to make you feel loved and protected. But turn around and cheat and possibly ( maybe not all of them) hit you. It’s like sympathy for the devil. Bottom line though…. They were not men after Gods own heart 😞😔🥺

I'm utterly captivated by mobsters and gangsters! Speaking for myself, my upbringing was a world away from any criminal activities. Growing up as a Black woman, I often faced stereotypes-people assumed I came from the projects or the hood, but that couldn't be further from my reality. What draws me in is the universal theme of "LOYALTY" that runs through every criminal organization. In my nearly 53 years, I have not encountered that intense loyalty in the same way, and I truly admire it. I've always felt that God has shown unwavering loyalty to me, which I sincerely appreciate. Human loyalty, on the other hand, has proven elusive. One thing is for sure: crime bosses are incredibly SMART, and there’s so much to learn just by listening to their stories!

I'm not sure how i became fascinated with the mafia, But i grew up in Cicero Illinois, Home of Al Capone. The hotel he stayed at has been torn down, But the building Mr. Capone would hang out at, (formally a bank and now school Dist 99 headquarters) was behind my grandmother's house, which i grew up in, AND she was actually born in that building. So, watching your videos & hearing your stories is just WOW, so THANK YOU for sharing !!!!

In my personal opinion, it's the respect aspect of a being in the mob that makes people so fascinated by it. Most of them had class. They weren't thugs. They took a stand against the administration and most people wish they could do the same. They want to be able to be wealthy and do what they wanna do.

Because most people have a secret desire to be evil. Being bad is seen as a more exciting life than a pious Godly one. Adam was getting boring, and Eve was hanging out near the Forbidden Tree. Humans crave excitement.

@ It takes effort to be good. Without effort we naturally fall into sin because it’s in our nature. If you are a Christian you will realize this. When people sin they go hog wild because they are tired of being good. In affairs and in vices people have little restraint because they are weary of trying to be good.

I guess the fascination with the Cosa Nostra/Italian Mafia also comes from decades of Hollywood movies and presence in the American media which also has a worldwide influence. Whereas other organizations like Latin American drug cartels etc. just got popularized in recent years with series like Narcos. OK, there was also Scarface with Pacino before, but it really had also more a Mafia vibe, even though he did that Cuban accent 😁

I always figured it was because they’re sensational. There’s a charisma and appeal in figures that live life on their own terms and outside societal rules. The idea of having the power of a mobster, Capone, Dillinger, Gotti, suave men in sharp suits, means laughing in the face of people who make those rules and commanding respect for it. Deep down I think a lot of people have at least a little bit of a desire to live like that.

I was 16 years old when I went to the movie, The Godfather. It really effected me. It brought on a trend of mob movies. Like the Valachi papers and many others. But The Godfather was the top of the list. It formed my view of the Mafia. I have followed Brother in Christ Michael Franzese's work and testimony for a few years.
@Brush4000Ай бұрын
Well, it's simple. The average person doesn't have the wealth that mobsters have. Plus a lot of people have petty revenge fantasies. People want to get even with the person who stole their lunch from the breakroom, or get angry with the people who call in when it's busy at work. They like the idea people don't mess with crime bosses. Scarface was meant as a warning, but a lot of people idolized him. He had a lot of money, he had people willing to do anything for him. He was famous and normal people didn't want to mess with him, ie fear. Many men didn't mind he died in a shoot out because he died on top. A lot of people will ignore any crimes the mafia does because they wish they could live that life. People would rather think no innocent person gets hurt by crime, people just want to live like a rockstar. Wealth and no one messes with them. During the Great Depression I've read a lot of people idolized bank robbers because they were "fighting the man".

I think a lot of the fascination is people understand crime is gonna exist. If crime must exist, then why not have it drive nice cars, wear nice suits, act as a secret society, and command respect? Plus the fact big cities like Chicago and New York... Big cities have everything a person could want. Who's got access to that, and more? The mafia. I think a big part of it is escapism from the mundane with people living vicariously through depictions of the mafia in media.

I'm reminded of the scene in 'The Godfather Part Two,' when the elderly Hyman Roth slowly stalks up to Michael Corleone, saying "you're in Prohibition -" like he's back in the 1920s, a strange decade in Americana.
