I visited Anfield with the hospitality ticket that cost a fortune. I sang and cheered to my hearts content, just for the other "tourists" staring down at me with a frown in their face like I'm mad. We were seated near the visitor's fan and I can hear them sing louder than anyone else in the stadium. I have to agree with this observation, we need to put a rule that if the tourist do not want to cheer, they should be put right next to the visitor fan so some of us can do our job!

People misrepresent what the Anfield atmosphere is. It has never been a constant cacophony of chorus and clamour. Even in the 70s and 80s, when Liverpool where at their absolute peak, the atmosphere ebbed and flowed. Against smaller teams, the atmosphere is often barely anything above average. What people refer to when they talk about Anfield are those moments and periods in games when it turns into an absolute feral pit of pandemonium. Sometimes, this lasts for a few minutes. Sometimes, it can be for most of the game. But it is never constant, as seems to be the common misunderstanding, but nowhere is. People will come away from Anfield saying that the atmosphere is a myth but it's not, it's wildly misunderstood and misrepresented by fans looking to point score online. The fact remains that Anfield is talked about by some of the greats of the game as a memorable stadium. Those who are lucky enough to have experienced Anfield truly ignite have absolutely no doubt that it can be a special place.

I was first taken to Anfield as a little boy by my dad and uncle in the autumn of 1987. Liverpool were top of the league, unbeaten, with [arguably] their greatest team ever and [undoubtedly] their most exciting to watch team ever. The Kop was all standing still. We won the game 4-0. ... Yet the atmosphere was nothing special at all that day. (although atmospheres in all english grounds have definately declined over the decades somewhat) Twas ever thus. Unless the team is just about to win a trophy or playing a handful of sides that are big rivals, it isn't going to be anything spectacular at Anfield. People may point to the 1960s Panorama documentary footage of how great things were in the past. However, that was all filmed on the day Liverpool beat Arsenal 5-0 to clinch the league championship for the first time in decades -hardly a typical Saturday afternoon.

Nope, it was later than the QPR game. That season we racked up 4-0 wins like George Graham's Arsenal did with 1-0s. The main notoriety around this game was that the opposition team had a Brazilian playing for them.

In those years, early 2000s, I also travelled to Anfield to accompany my son who is a lifelong Liverpool supporter. In my humble opinion, Anfield has the BEST atmosphere of any ground I have ever been to. The singing, the chants, the craic, and the Kop are beyond compare. That said, if you are looking for the supporters to be the "twelfth man', truly lifting the team to better performances, Toon Army are the BEST.

But you can generally project it onto the Premiere League. This is not just an Anfield or Liverpool phenomenon! And not just since yesterday! Sometimes I think it's intentional. Everyone sits in their place, claps and applauds very nicely. But please don't jump up, stay seated! Okay, raise your arms, but only if a goal has been scored!🤷♂️🤦🏼♂️ At the end of the day, that's (among other things) the price for this whole "system"! Money, money, more and more money, marketing everything to the last corner of the world. Billionaire club owners come and go (they aren't there out of charity for the club either!), transfer fees and salaries rise astronomically with no end in sight. The normal football fan, who has perhaps been to the stadium every home game for 40 or 50 years, is suddenly seen as just a normal "consumer", like in a supermarket, etc.! If there's one thing I'm proud of here in Germany, of just one thing, it's that we, the fans, ultras, club members, etc., against all odds, still have that little bit of something (which is what football actually is) of a fan -Culture, fan and spectator-friendly ticket prices, an incredible atmosphere in the stadiums from the 1st to the 3rd league, which you can certainly only dream of! And despite all this, the Bundesliga is not even far away in international comparison! But I don't want to judge it at all, I just want to explain it! You wanted it this way, we wanted it different! Everyone has to know for themselves...

As materialism, exploitation, ego , and pomp creeps slowly slowly slowly into football, then the SPIRIT of football getting squashed , or covered over / hidden . A good analogy is perhaps, a party where everyone is invited , free of charge , and the whole set up is PURELY for the people's good time , versus, a party, charged with high prices, that is mainly about, ego , competition, and basically tge superficial. The people focused party, is likely to be way more ALIVE, than the materialisticley motivated party, thats had the life a soul sucked out of it . I think there is a parallel between the party analogy, and modern day football personally.

Americans, especially, are used to being told when to be loud, what to chant, and when to be quiet. We are used to literal cheer leaders. Folks are worried about being embarrassed if they try to start a song and nobody joins along. If the screens just said “make noise,” you’d see more from the tourists.

Atmospheres across Britain are shit these days (yes, even Celtic and Rangers); the real difference isn`t that you get quiet games, it`s that the loud games are less loud and less frequent.
