Let's take a look at why artisan soap costs more than the average commercial soap. Remember kids.. quality over quantity :)

The reason I don't usually buy homemade soap is that the local soap maker uses WAY more fragrance than I can tolerate. 😂

I thought I could purchase local handmade soap for my B & B guests. Nope. It stinks of too much fragrance. So, I make my own castille and will soon learn how to perfect my own lighly scented artisan bar. Thank you John. I truly appreciate your work.

ok, I just looked in your shop and $5.50 a bar is a bargain compared to the $10-$12 a bar that I have seen in many of the etsy shops for the decorated soaps. I look at it this way, I can use store bought soap for my hand washing or quick morning showers when I am running late but bathing is also relaxing time for me so I want good soap, nice candles, great cup of tea, fluffy bath towels etc. so I am glad to pay for quality items to make that experience.

Uncle Jon, I have had many people return to me once they realize they have not been using a ton of hand and body lotion after using one of my soap bars. It's so true and I have this conversation with people all the time. The companies they have been buying soap from are stripping their skin of moisture so they can sell them an additional product (which is more expensive) to put the moisture back into their skin. I sell them a product that will not strip their skin of its natural moisture in the first place and using it is a pleasant experience which is a bonus lol. I've always been an extreme hand washer lol and there is nothing worse than having to dread the experience when you know how dry your hands are going to feel after washing. This was the primary reason that I got into soap making for myself and family. We all have sensitive skin and had bad experiences with my soap choices, both bars and liquid hand soap. Many times, I felt that I needed medical attention for my hands instead of hand lotion, but not anymore. My hands are smooth, soft and actually look younger lol. Also, my soap has been better on my face than the expensive facial cleansers I've used my entire life. Thank you for the video Jon.

I have paid anywhere from $15-$20 a bar of soap Clinique Macy's. I've also paid 15 for handcrafted. Good soap is good of course made with better ingredients.. I really don't understand why this is so hard to believe. It's like anything in life you want American cheese, or you want a brie cheese. One is made with a stack of chemicals, and one is made with real milk. You're a gentleman.

I'm watching this again. Hope it gets counted as another viewing ☺️ I just told an acquaintance that I save the beef fat from when I try burgers to make soap. (I think she thought I grew a second head.) Just the cleanest off the top when I tilt the skillet to dip it. I keep a recycled tomato sauce can by my stove. In a month or so I have enough for a quick, 4 big bar batch. This is almost something for nothing! I add a little ground up oatmeal for grit and extra skin care. Takes 20 minutes tops, while I'm watching TV. How much of our bar soap in the store comes from China for example? Who touched it? Did they come to work sick that day? I'm doing it because I don't want granny's recipe to be lost in time, but I love doing it anyways. Such a sense of satisfaction.

I too am a crafter, designer, and artisan of products. I began my artistic journey years ago with candles and now I create and craft a plethora of items, from natural material wreaths to complex lotions. I appreciate hand crafted products. A lot of thought and time goes into each and every product. Material costs, especially quality materials, can be very expensive for crafters. I don't complain because I like the fact I know exactly what is in my products and I know my "manufacturing" practices are clean & sanitary. I am more than glad to pay $8 for a beautifully crafted bar of soap....a soap the artisan can boast proudly is all natural and healthy for my skin. Keep up the good work, Uncle Jon, I'm right beside you on your thoughts / comments!

I have been buying hand made soaps for several years now. I developed very dry skin and eczema as I have aged. Hand made soaps never leave my skin feeling itchy and burning like commercial soaps. I have never considered it too expensive. I have however started making my own. Due to good advice from you, I did a lot of research and developed my own way recipe. I got lucky. Loved my first soap and I’m sticking with that recipe. Not interested in a business just personal use for myself and my family. Thank you for not giving me a recipe so I had to find what I felt would work best for me.

Thanks for making this video. It's always bothered me when people complain about "high" prices and assume everything has to do with "greed" and "profit". Most cost differences have to do with economies of scale and required margin to stay in business and remain competitive. I mean don't get me wrong, I don't expect everyone to get a degree in economics or business, but you can learn about this stuff in 30 seconds using the internet. Economies of scale and required margins are not difficult to understand.

I really love buying handmade soaps. Not only do they have ingredients, that my skin loves, but I can also use them on my baby. My baby started getting some sort of rash or I don't know what it was exactly on her cheeks it was red and dry. So after I finished using the Johnson soap I used a handmade soap. Her skin was so soft looked a lot healthier if that makes sense and whatever she had on her cheeks started to slowly go away. Plus I love supporting small U.S. made products. I wish I would have bought soaps from you I just bought a couple of soaps for 9.18 each. I always like to stock up so I will be buying soaps from your store thank You!

I made a great bar of oatmeal and honey soap and I gave a sample to a guy and he loved it and when he came to my house to get more and I told him it was $3.00 a bar his jaw dropped. He bought some anyway. But I stopped making them because at $3.00 a bar I was spending too much to make it. Good luck your business!

very well said, and maybe you could even take in account the fact that your soap (our soap) is natural, while the chemicals you put on your body with factory made soap is just amazingly high. I tell my clients that they wouldn't consider to eat all those chemicals, but put it on their skin? That's when they understand that our soap (handmade soap) is for sure more healthy than the industrial product.

very true and another reason that those commercial bars are dirt cheap is because they're "detergent based" and not a true soap. when i heard that, everything started to fall in place. that's also why it takes more of the commercial stuff compared to the artisan products.

I like to answer with the fact that my soap and zest are both soap, they get the job done, if that what someone wants go for the cheap stuff, but mine is the experience of a luxurious product that make the act of taking a shower much more enjoyable...so some people want to feel that and are willing to pay for that privileges.
