This may be unrelated but various studies have shown that western countries have seen a huge decrease in male sperm count. This was not the case for Latin America, Africa, or Asia. This would seem to indicate some sort environmental cause that's specific to western nations. Also a recent study found that microscopic bits of plastic were present in over 90% of drinking water tested in various places throughout the US. No doubt our newly developed lifestyles are polluting our environment and effecting people's health. One has to purposefully go out of their way to avoid the commonly available foods and water sources in order to avoid exposure to these widespread pollutants.

Ever read about Weston Price? It's obvious that people in civilized societies aren't getting the nutrition they need. I wouldn't be surprised if the rise of autism is because of malnutrition. At a disability school I went to, I noticed that quite a few parents were overweight, indicating poor health. As an autistic person, we shouldn't just accept this. We need to find out why more and more people are getting diagnosed with mental disabilities.

I'm on the spectrum and desperately want the causes to be found. There are many like me that are able to work well, pay bills, have a family and get on just fine. But yes, there are many others that will be stuck on disability and or in a care facility... even worse, homeless, as their parents die off. It's generally not some blessing like some make it out to be. I wish I could be normal. Then I wouldn't hate myself so much for the heap of rejection and social isolation I have to endure. A male on the spectrum can quickly get written off as weird, dangerous or creepy despite being nothing more than just awkward like myself. Thankfully I found my dream job where I work when I want, as much as I want and with no customers or coworkers. Sure, it's a bit lonely. But, no drama that comes with interacting with people. Makes 6 figures annually as much as I work too. Only work roughly 6 or 7 months out of the year total. A month on 7 days a week, 10+hr days, a month off to spend with my family. I'm incredibly lucky to say the least.

2 autistic kids. 1 boy 1 girl. I had 4 kids total. It can’t be bad behavior when it’s manifestations begin before Manipulation ability begins. We noticed the light went out of my sons eyes before he was 2. Everything changed drastically with him. He lost abilities seemingly overnight. Was verbal then wasn’t. Could walk then couldn’t: it took 7 years for them to diagnose autism. My daughter was a junior in high school when she was diagnosed. Both of my kids have extreme deficits in one part of learning but they excel to levels unimaginable in others. My daughter is a beautiful writer. She is excellent in language and art. She struggles with math and science incredibly bad. Something happens to these kids. They even checked my kids for heavy metals poisoning. Tested our home for lead paint. In the end it was autism. Socially both have trouble and prefer to stay home or with cousins rather than friends. Both graduated HS one can drive one can not. It’s very strange how it manifests so differently in the genders and from case to case.

Are there others diagnosed among you or your husbands relatives? I wonder if it could be because of toxins now present in our environment. Paint on the walls, all food now packaged in plastics and styrofoams, pesticides, fire retardant in modern furniture unlike old furniture, metal water mains (piping) being replaced with PVC watermains, studies showing the plastics in electronics emit toxic chemicals, etc. Is autism as prevalent in developing countries or was it as prevalent in past generations, or is diagnosing getting better or is it a mix of both?

Mike M I’m from a large family. My siblings all had many kids as well. I have great nieces and nephews but so far only 2 of the boys have been diagnosed with autism. My daughter is the only girl. Going to family older than my kids there is nobody else diagnosed with autism. I do have 2 older siblings that have dyslexia and both of my autistic kids have dyslexia as well as dyscalculia. Also my kids were diagnosed after a lot of tests including ct scans. I know some people with kids diagnosed by a psychiatrist but they’ve never had any brain imaging. I don’t know why that is. My kids were tested for heavy metals poisoning, had full panel allergy tests done, and extensive blood work.

Clecius Ferreira A CDC whistle blower came out and said he lied to save his job and that vaccines are not safe. The reason there is a link between vaccines and autism is that Autistic children suffer from Gut dysbiosis and cannot clear toxins. Thymerasol or mercury is a toxin!! It should not be in our vaccines. Watch the movie Vaxxed or just watch a few children’s mothers and fathers on the KZbin show vaxxed. Payam yazdi, Yes, as does dyslexia and speech difficulties; as well as ADHD, etc.. But parents with more resources can provide better physical, psychological and educational support for their children; than the poor or even the middle class. Being able to afford a tutor and servants also help both the child and the parents. Also, trust funds come in handy when your child is unable to support or care for him-/ her-self as an adult. (A parent of a severely autistic or physically/ mentally-challenged offspring is "on duty" 24/7 -- for the remainder of the life of the parent or the child ... whichever one dies first) Teens and adults with severe ASD can not be left alone because they do not have the ability to protect themselves from things (like moving traffic or a nasty dog) that most of use could avoid encountering because we are aware of our environment and know what to do to avoid the moving vehicle or lurking dog. Also, often, if left alone; they often become prey to unsavory characters who take advantage of them. If left alone, they often get robbed, kidnapped, raped by people who encounter them. It is really sad, how cruel some people can be to the disabled (and to animals for that matter) who are unable to defend themselves. :(

Autism has a lot to do with the ages of fathers and then the mothers, in that order. In developing countries where both parents are typically young, Autism is not much of an issue. This is mostly a unique issue of developed countries. Specifically, its an issue of our "modern social norm": getting married and having children at older ages.

No that's impossible. Not one older person has ever been diagnosed with it. Why? If they wanted to prove that autism has been around forever, why don't they? Benjamin Burkhardt ASD has probably existed, both because of genetics and the reality that our some of our species have been exposed to chemical pollution (as well as, in some cases electro- magnetic and radiation ... naturally occurring) since at least the Bronze age; if not before. I agree with you about the educational system. It is possible that the prevalence of ASD appears to be increasing; I think that may be due to better diagnostic techniques. Also, children spend much more time indoors than they did, even 50 years ago. That may be a factor. Of course the outside air is more polluted than it used to be in many places 50 years ago.
