Diesel is also more difficult to set on fire, which makes it less likely to explode if fuel or vapour leaks. This makes it much safer, especially in marine applications where gasoline vapours can get trapped in a boat’s hull.

Rudolf Diesel didn't event diesel fuel, he invented a diesel engine which can run on multiple types of heavy fuels, diesel is just one of them.
@EdMcF1Ай бұрын
Diesel isn't 'less refined' so much as a denser fraction of the distillate of crude oil, so it is a bit heavier and the benefits of that are that it is less flammable and has more energy per weight. It also freezes at a higher temperature than gasoline (petrol), which is a negative in the higher latitudes, but which can be overcome with additives or fuel heating.

It used to be 1/4 the price of gas. Now, no one has the technology to build large high torque gas engines like they did in the 50s and 60s. Cummins is working on one that looks promising. In Panama, they are still using the big V 12 GMC busses from the 50s! They run them on E95 because we no longer have high octain gas.

In India diesel used to be half as expensive as petrol (gas), since it was subsidized. As a result manufacturers inteoduced diesels to power every class of vehicles incl. subcompacts. The govt realised this was a problem, and soon the price parity was brought down, along with stringent emission norms. On the flip side that increased price inflation since the heavy transportation sectors heavily depends on diesel, but now fewer manufacturers are now offering diesels for passenger cars, especially after dieselgate

Compression Ratio of a Gasoline (Petrol) Engine is between 8:1 & 12:1 while for Diesel Engines it is typically 14:1 - 22:1. As a result, Diesel Engines are more fuel efficient.
@kryts27Ай бұрын
In a nutshell; diesel engines have torque and efficiency (over gasoline or petrol engines). The bore stroke of a diesel engine is over-square (meaning it's a further stroke than the cylinder head), wheras petrol is typically under-square. Petrol engines are better at high revolution engines; like piston aero-engines and sports cars, having more speed but less torque. Diesel better for load bearing machines like trucks. The pressure in a diesel engine cylinder is at least 6 times higher than petrol engines, and the engine generally is more robust although petrol engines are lighter. The high pressure explodes the oily diesel fuel and air mix in the cylinder, wheras the lower pressure petrol engines need ignition by spark plug.
@bobschultz2895Ай бұрын
Because of the higher compression ratio the more you decompress the air after ignition the more power you get. The exhaust will come out cooler, more energy extracted.

Simple. It comes down to the difference of BTUs. Diesel has more BTUs than gasoline. More BTUs, more rapidly expanding air in the combustion chamber which moves pistons.
@josephgaviotaАй бұрын
Very Interesting. One thing I don't understand. If diesel has more energy than gasoline, and is particularly good at moving heavy loads, why is it, when driving uphill on the highways, the cars are zipping along at 70, and the trucks are in the slow lane going 25 mpg. I completely respect diesel engines, I'm just trying to understand "if it has more power, why does it go slower."

Solution: I fix my own cars. Other than transmissions work and alignments, i do my own stuff. Dont have the tool? Go buy it. Bought the software for my respective vehicles. Bought reliable vehicles from Toyota and VW. I have saved at least $10k in the last two years doing my own repairs. I buy my parts at the dealer with most stuff because OEM tends to be more reliable and for shits and giggles i always ask how much to replace part X, always over $1200. For something that takes a few hours in my garage or backyard.

Why is the Torque vs rpm important, when you can use gears to get the same result from both? Or can't you?
@guacamoleweiner69Ай бұрын
Diesel engine efficiency is 1500 to 2200 rpms. That's where they hit max torque. Lower gears help amplify torque while higher gears amplify horsepower

Money money money! 30% less fuel consumption due to much higher efficency of diesel engine! If the motor consumes 50L per hour its significant, if 500L - no option other than diesel! Energy per litre or kg for all fuels is the same, torque has nothing to do with fuel ratio. Its possible to make high-torque petrol engine, not a big deal from american middle trucks to aviation (cessna172 petrol motor works on 2500 rpm max! My van diesel has redline 4000).

Diesel engines are designed to produce torque, if a gasoline engine was designed the same way they would also produce torque. Diesel condensate makes up 30% of a barrel of oil and the oil companies needed a market for it. Because diesel engines need to be larger than gasoline engines they can be installed in larger machines. These large machine would work just fine with gasoline engine but the oil companies need a buyer for their diesel. Industry has been convince by price and then propaganda that heavy machines must have a diesel engine.
@roadrocket7770Ай бұрын
Gas is not reliable. Most gas engines are due for rebuild around 200k miles and the fuel burns faster due to lower energy content with the fuel itself. Most long haul trucks regularly exceed 1 million miles before a major tear down is required. Lets see a gasser even get half that while dealing with the demands and abuse diesel takes on a daily basis

How do you think that electricity was created? Diesel engines mine the coal or lithium for the batteries.. transported by diesel trains and shipped by diesel ships.. people forget that EVs only store power they do not create it.. here in Australia they've installed Cummins diesel generators in remote areas so EVs can make it to the next charging station.. just because you don't have a tail pipe doesn't mean your EV hasn't created emissions.. and depending where you get your electricity.. also doesn't mean it's still not creating harmful emissions to create that electricity

Electric is not as magic as they all want you to think. Learn a lot deeper into the physics of it all, and you'll understand why. The average politician or teacher really doesn't know except from the popular (uneducated) common thoughts. Learn the differences between mechanical engines and electrical motors. They operate completely differently, and energy density is everything.
