Why is Ennui French in Inside Out 2? Unlike all of Riley's other emotions, who are American like her, Ennui, the embodiment of boredom, stands out with a French accent. This quirk comes from Riley's experiences with boring French lessons. Riley's parents, originally from Ontario, had Riley take French classes every year, and her boredom with all things French rubbed off onto her emotions. So, it's basically canon that Ennui is named "Boredom" because they got tired of just calling it "boredom."

Inside Out Director Pete Docter didn’t like just the name boredom so he went with the french word that means boredom which is ennui, when Inside Out 1 was in its story board phase there was a scrapped emotion called Schadenfreude which is the german word meaning ‘to find amusement in others pain’ who had a german accent and wore german clothing.

Ennui is depicted as French to add more fun in the movie and because her actions/personality match well with French culture / philosophy. People in France use a lot irony, snobish attitude sometimes, critique, and the way to refuse speaking other languages and follow orders as well. Ennui is also an outsider the all movie. Her French origin tends to emphasize these features and are kind of a tribute to the staff work and origins. The same occurred for Red Alert (Origins of friends, culture) or Elementals (creation of the world for the Fire people, etc). Look closely at Pixar movie since their first creations and you will see many of them integrated cultural elements of their staff or based their movie on it (China for Red Alert or Scotland for Brave). Plus many Pixar animators are foreigners and many of them French. They usually tend to rely to the team to ask for ideas and integrate them in the movie. I bet everything on the fact the staff was consulted to design the character and the idea for Ennui to be French had been brought at the table. This is how Pixar managed well for years. Proof to be is the first huge success for Disney since Covid. Disney doesn't understand Pixar DNA and tried to blend it. The best is to let Pixar staff choose their own decisions and creative ideas.
