Why is everybody talking about this? | GAN Mirror M

from my pov it seems like gan is putting the wca puzzles aside and it looks like they are trying to make non wca puzzles turn amazing and make them competition usable. maybe gan is trying to get some puzzles added for the wca comps

That would be nice! Imagine if, in 5 years or so, we could have "non-WCA" or shape mod categories as standard in events!

I really hope this gets added to the official WCA list of events! For so many reasons: It’s entertaining to watch, it’s finally enjoyable to solve due to this new magnetic version, but also almost every manufacturer makes a mirror cube, so it’s not like a monopoly on the puzzle so it can be added without the political problems of only having one brand with a usable puzzle.

the nearly empty box with just a screw driver is probably a placeholder for when they release the GAN Mirror XLSM 2022. where you can adjust the length of the mirror blocks

The hype is for specifically people who enjoy speedsolving the mirror blocks. It's not really intended for the fastest 3x3 solvers or anything, but there are a number of people who average under 15 seconds or are interesting in getting faster so it's a huge step up

People who are interested in both WCA and non-WCA events are really excited for this puzzle because it's basically one the first actually good speedsolvable non-WCA events. It's great to see such a famous cube manufacturer like GAN make a speedcube for something other than WCA events. I don't understand your argument about Max Park or Feliks Zemdegs using it. They wouldn't buy it to practice on for normal 3x3x3 event. They would only buy it if they were genuinely interested in speedsolving non-WCA events. I really like it, and I started speedsolving it, almost getting a sub-1:00 average. Really interesting to see GAN go in this direction. I hope they will do an FTO or curvy copter or something in the future :)

That's true - can't argue that it's a really nice speed cube (exactly what you'd expect from GAN)! Perhaps it's that I've never been too into the Mirror Blocks as a shape mod, but that doesn't mean other people can't be super hyped about it! Just got to hope there will be a GAN Fisher Cube or Axis Cube soon - that'd be amazing!

Gan stuck with just 3x3 for YEARS and now there's a 2x2, 4x4, Mega, Pyra, Skewb... and now a Mirror Cube :P

Simple: it's because it's not intended for improving on official events, it's intended for enjoying Mirror blocks, and to be able to speedsolve it if you want and not being limited by hardware, which happens a lot with shape-shifting mods, and even more with collection puzzles. Being limited by hardware and not having options is frustrating, speedcubers nowadays don't have this issue cuz they always get the fancy turning stuff tbh. But I get the confusion and I get why you don't get the hype. As you said, you're not interested in non-WCA events and that's normal, everyone enjoy different things. For me I was extremely hyped since the info was leaked, cuz I love speedsolving collection puzzles. I like speedsolving, but I like more solving shape-shifting mods or solving strange puzzles, but if I can combine both then it's perfection. For putting it in regular 3x3 context: For Mirror enjoyers, this is like going from a Moyu Guanlong (or worse) to any modern magnetized 3x3 speedcube

I didn't really get the hype either, but it is a cool addition for the collection. Also, corner cutting and magnets do seem to make Mirror Blocks less frustrating!

I feel like part of the hype is that its just a good mirror blocks lol. They're fun puzzles but the quality (at least for the ones I have) is so bad it can take away from the solve. I'm sure there are other good ones out there, but having one that's made specifically to be/feel good is great

People pay thousands of pounds for shiny objects that don't do anything. This shiny object costs only 20 and it's a fully functional puzzle. I'd call it a bargain.
