For your polar pattern testing, please use a directivity graph for better representation. You can do this by rotating the mic around a fixed point, then loading the data into VituixCAD and exporting a normalized directivity graph, including contour lines. The same method works for speakers, as shown in the CEA-2034 documentation.

I know there’s a lot of controversy going on right now, but I want to give some feedback on the microphone testing - For the polar pattern, that’s not usually how those are graphed. As a professional audio engineer I found it difficult to understand, so I can see this being very confusing to the average consumer. I suggest using the type of graphs / visuals pro audio manufacturers ship with their microphones. Those are pretty easy to understand even at a glance.

As an experienced audio engineer I was disappointed with the complete lack of mentioning the distortion. While I do agree with the conclusion, it's a great mic for the price, you massively undervalued the RE20 or the MKH50 here. They sound way cleaner and more precise. I am aware the problem on the FiFine this is likely the preamp or ADC rather than the mic itself, but since it's integrated in the mic it's still part of it.
@andrew6978
@andrew6978 Жыл бұрын
I would wager he's just clipping something later on. It's hard to make a mic capsule distort in front of guitar amps if you set the gain properly, let alone speaking volume. He could be clipping the internal DAC but that is even more worrisome when he can't even get the gain right to avoid clipping. Bottom line, this is almost 100% user error.
@xfghffhfg

@@xfghffhfg Did I say gain distorts the capsule? No. He was referring to the distortion in the video I assume, which is likely due to improper gain settings. THD is unlikely to be noticeable on youtube unless the mic is broken. The capsule of any decent mic does not distort under voice SPL. Ergo, it's gain stage issues. "definitely not the ADC, converters are the least contributors to the sound with modern audio products." You do realise you can easily clip ADCs? You don't seem to know what you're talking about.

Someone said they'd send back the waterblock. Someone never sent back the waterblock to Billet. Someone set up an auction and put items up for auction that should not have been. Someone mistakenly put up the waterblock for auction. Someone should have been tracking the auction buyers. Someone lost the tracking sheet. Seems like this whole saga was because of incompetence from the people or teams that were responsible for the above. And of course, Linus failure of a response only made things 10 times worse.

He also doubled and tripled down, tested it wrong instead of spending "one hundred/five hundred dollars" reshooting with the right GPU, tested it wrong on purpose, then said it was a horrible product with no market share that nobody should buy. Oh yeah and he's sponsored by another water block company. Cool. It's not like people regularly spent tons of money on water blocks and hardline water cooling, it's not like he tests significantly more expensive less useful things constantly (huge fans, passive cooled cases, etc), or anything like that! No, he was just looking out for the consumer! By: -misrepresenting data -falsifying and copying test results -changing and retesting certain products to conform to manufacturer numbers rather than showing actual results -owning stakes in companies he shills for on his channel -reviewing a product he has bias against and fucking up all parts of use, showing a lack of competence and zero compassion for entrepreneurs trying to do something new in the PC space -focusing 90% of content on things viewers will never afford like the 1600 dollar GPU he was misusing on the water block No, the two guys spending time prototyping a new idea must be in the wrong! Am I so out of touch? 800 dollars for a water block is insane!!!! There's no market share, it's for the last gen cards which surely nobody uses a year later!!! They should have just developed and machined a prototype for the 4090, right? It's not like designing a product that is high quality takes FOREVER especially with a small team, NOOO! They shoulda just caught up. Surely LTT designed their screwdrivers in just a couple months, and products like their backpacks never have issues..... As a longtime viewer, I respect Linus and LMG a lot, as well as what they're trying to accomplish. Gamers Nexus notwithstanding, however, I've personally noticed an uneasy amount of discrepancies, corrections, and marks of rushed content throughout recent videos. As LMG grows into the technical reviewing and data collection side of things with Labs, I really do think it's important that a little extra time is taken to ensure presented information is accurate. I understand the financial reasons for releasing videos fast, but if doing so harms the legitimacy of every piece of content on the channels, it just isn't right. For all it's worth, I work in video production (TV/streaming broadcast at the moment) and know from experience that rushing content just leads to unsatisfied employees and a needlessly stunted final product. If not from me, please take a lesson from all the game devs we criticize for rushing games-rushed content almost always shows.

I'm saying this out of love for the channel as I grew up watching Linus, Luke, and the overall channel grow. The following what I have to say is not out of hate but for concern and overall love as a long time fan. Before Steve's video came out, I too have noticed the amount of errors, inconsistencies, later corrections that take place, and the fact that there isn't a lot of accountability being shown really concerns me. The employees, many of which us fans respect and admire with their vast knowledge and charisma, even said that it's "quantity over quality" when it comes to the videos. If memory serves me right, back in the old LTT days, there was a time when videos weren't uploaded daily but rather I think 3-5 times per week, and the quality of the videos showed tremendously! Even back then if something was wrong, the team took accountability. But now it's seems there's been a shift. Even watching this video, there's plenty of things such as high pass filter being on or not. I know this channel isn't a mic/audio review channel, but a good example of someone who thoroughly reviews microphones and audio gear is Podcastage, who tests the equipment through various scenarios like voice, instruments, the polaroid pattern, proximity effect, etc. showing the piece of equipment's full capabilities through real case usage including people who will use it at their computer desks and visual and good representative graphs. Now, I doubt Linus will see this, but this next part is directly to you. I'm not entirely sure what you might be thinking right now with Steve's video coming up, as well as seeing the comments from this video alone, but the voices who're telling you these things like something needs to change, "we want better quality videos", "take better accountability", etc., aren't coming out of place of hate, but concern and I would even say love. The community loves the channel, loves what you've created, what the company will become later with labs and other projects you probably have stored in the pipeline we don't even know about yet, but please take what we're saying, as fans who love this channel, into consideration. Listen to the criticism, take accountability where it's needed, and just overall strive to do better. We all want to see you succeed and continue to grow.

Long time viewer and have genuinely used your reviews to inform my purchases. Was so excited for labs and to see what amazing things could come out of it, but I was shocked and saddened to see the inaccuracies you’ve been pushing. I totally acknowledge that everyone makes mistakes, but the brazen lack of accountability and the crunch culture emphasised on previous videos is shocking. As someone who has experienced such a culture in a startup it’s saddening to see a company which portrays itself as being a beacon of good business practices and trust having such an issue. I love the videos and hope that the whole team can learn from this and have some introspection on what led them to this point.

Unfortunately, Labs has a PR problem. Right now, Labs is just a team, the vision for Labs has not been achieved, and we are nowhere near that (1-2 yrs away, minimum). Labs (the vision of Labs Linus has) does not exist, and the testing they do today is not far off from what LMG has been doing for the past 10 years, in fast in may be suffering because they are testing new methodologies for testing, and using new equipment. Labs will take quite some time to mature into an organization that LMG is trying to build with it, now it is just a well funded startup trying to put itself together.

The agreement was that they, Billet, receive their waterblock back because it’s their one and only best prototype they have, but LTT decided, and without the permission off the owners, to auction it at LTX. Now Billet is screwed because their prized prototype is gone and most possible auctioned to a competitor company to be cloned. Years of hard work, dedication, and dreams crushed by the guys they most likely looked up to. as a long time viewer i feel very disapointed on your response and dammage handling

So how should they have responded to that company? Specifically from the post it seems that there was a communication mistake that happened with both companies. LMG seems to have reached out to the company and offered to pay them whatever price they deemed appropriate for the value of the lost prototype iteration before GN made the first video. This specific issue doesn't seem to happen frequently. Not only have they shown their inventory and product handling process, but have shown to consistently been improving it over the years. Is it a perfect solution? No. But there is no way to wave a wand and undo what has happened.

@@dragonhero14The way to respond is by not auctioning off other companies' prototypes without their permission. Let's be serious here, mates. Linus will not comment on the subjects criticized by GN because he does not know how to approach the situation, that's why we had the fiasco with the backpack and the "trust me bro" scandal, but also other problems along the way. I love both Linus and the team - as well as Steve and his team at GN. But he needs to understand that some things can't just be thrown under the rug as if it were "a simple mistake" or "poor communication". What are we talking about here? It's crazy that it was Steve from GN who had the guts to tell it like it is. Not packed up nicely by LMG editors, seriously. You can't just trim a clip on YT and then continue to trash the manufacturer because you failed to do your job. Just as it is not normal to "sell" the intellectual property of others at an "auction". I think I speak for almost all of us when I say I'd rather see a longer, higher quality release once every couple days than the short low quality daily videos. As much as I love watching every LTT video a day, it's super annoying seeing these issues and the videos seemingly abruptly cutting to sponsor without actually ending and giving us closure. @TheDuelist
@TheDuelist Жыл бұрын
I remember him talking about the abrupt cuts to sponsor on the WAN show a couple years ago. It's so that the viewer never feels that the video is about to end. So it's all for viewer retention throughout the video. When YT recommends videos, it usually does it on a couple things, likes and views are some of them, but another huge one is how many viewers stayed through the whole video. A lot of people may not know this, and it was a shock to me until I started making videos myself, but I can see how many people leave one of my videos within the first 10 seconds and it's usually about 50%. LTT might have different numbers, but if I get a few thousand views on a video, 1,500 of those views left in the first 10 seconds. So keeping the viewer retention graph as high for as long as possible is a big player in YT recommending your videos to other people.

His reasoning for not making larger changes and just putting text corrections up "Listing the wrong amount of cache on a table for a CPU review is sloppy, but given that our conclusions are drawn based on our testing, not the spec sheet, it doesn't materially change the recommendation." and "That doesn't mean these things don't matter." @@utubekullanicisiLinus' statement: "There won't be a big WAN Show segment about this or anything. Most of what I have to say, I've already said, and I've done so privately. To Steve, I expressed my disappointment that he didn't go through proper journalistic practices in creating this piece. He has my email and number (along with numerous other members of our team) and could have asked me for context that may have proven to be valuable (like the fact that we didn't 'sell' the monoblock, but rather auctioned it for charity due to a miscommunication... AND the fact that while we haven't sent payment yet, we have already agreed to compensate Billet Labs for the cost of their prototype). There are other issues, but I've told him that I won't be drawn into a public sniping match over this and that I'll be continuing to move forward in good faith as part of 'Team Media'. When/if he's ready to do so again I'll be ready. To my team (and my CEO's team, but realistically I was at the helm for all of these errors, so I need to own it), I stressed the importance of diligence in our work because there are so many eyes on us. We are going through some growing pains - we've been very public about them in the interest of transparency - and it's clear we have some work to do on internal processes and communication. We have already been doing a lot of work internally to clean up our processes, but these things take time. Rome wasn't built in a day, but that's no excuse for sloppiness. Now, for my community, all I can say is the same things I always say. We know that we're not perfect. We wear our imperfection on our sleeves in the interest of ensuring that we stay accountable to you. But it's sad and unfortunate when this transparency gets warped into a bad thing. The Labs team is hard at work hard creating processes and tools to generate data that will benefit all consumers - a work in progress that is very much not done and that we've communicated needs to be treated as such. Do we have notes under some videos? Yes. Is it because we are striving for transparency/improvement? Yeah... What we're doing hasn't been in many years, if ever.. and we would make a much larger correction if the circumstances merited it. Listing the wrong amount of cache on a table for a CPU review is sloppy, but given that our conclusions are drawn based on our testing, not the spec sheet, it doesn't materially change the recommendation. That doesn't mean these things don't matter. We've set KPIs for our writing/labs team around accuracy, and we are continually installing new checks and balances to ensure that things continue to get better. If you haven't seen the improvement, frankly I wonder if you're really looking for it... The thoroughness that we managed on our last handful of GPU videos is getting really incredible given the limited time we have for these embargoes. I'm REALLY excited about what the future will hold. With all of that said, I still disagree that the Billet Labs video (not the situation with the return, which I've already addressed above) is an 'accuracy' issue. It's more like I just read the room wrong. We COULD have re-tested it with perfect accuracy, but to do so PROPERLY - accounting for which cases it could be installed in (none) and which radiators it would be plumbed with (again... mystery) would have been impossible... and also didn't affect the conclusion of the video... The only reason I can think of not to ask me is because my honest response might be inconvenient. We can test that... with this post. Will the "It was a mistake (a bad one, but a mistake) and they're taking care of it" reality manage to have the same reach? Let's see if anyone actually wants to know what happened. I hope so, but it's been disheartening seeing how many people were willing to jump on us here. Believe it or not, I'm a real person and so is the rest of my team. We are trying our best, and if what we were doing was easy, everyone would do it. Today sucks. Thanks for reading this." My take is ltt has time to change, but linus dosent seem interested. The statement was made 12 hours ago the video has gained significant momentum since then so hopefully it becomes something ltt cant ignore. For those saying it is gn getting jealous, you haven't understood what gn is saying. Ltt has a huge reach and massive presence it regularly lights fires under company's to get them to change. If they are entering the space of detailed reviews they need to be true and accurate. From Gn's video we can see they are not. Anybody who says this is gn being unhappy about labs is mistaken and a biased LTT fanboy. You lose nothing by this video being published there is no benefit to GN, this is for the benefit of the consumer and the audience. Linus' comments indicate that he doesn't intend to make a significant change which has significantly reduced my faith in labs. LTT need to address this and state what they are going to change, Or risk jeopardising the future of labs and LMG's credibility.

Just read the channel's bio and they have lost sight of their own mission: Linus Tech Tips is a passionate team of "professionally curious" experts in consumer technology and video production who aim to educate and entertain. 1) Professionally curious? Not enough to retest with the correct graphics card 2) Experts in consumer tech? Perhaps but not applied 3) Experts in video production? If failure to produce accurate reviews in fantastic production quality counts, sure. 4) Educate? With blatant misinformation and negligence, and then intentionally withholding on truth and/or accountability and responsibility for misinformation The only thing they did is entertain by pissing on themselves. Respect for Linus is lost, he's lost in the dough.

Linus has always set an abritary number on the amount of videos they need to do a week, claiming its what the audience expects. However the audience also expects quality. You're trying to have your cake and eat it too. Halving the number of videos you make per week could be a good thing. For better quality, and so employees at LMG can not feel rushed.
@BlenderBrit
@BlenderBrit Жыл бұрын
Not all the employees will benefit... because if you half the amount of videos, you'll have to sack a bunch of them. I've seen this argument so much over the past 24 hours... "Make less videos, easy!" .... That's not how companies like LTT work, they plan things based on revenue projections. (Well, I hope they do :D) so they're kind of stuck with the video amount to a certain degree, at least they are unless they want to make some really hard calls I imagine.

There is something to consider here that not enough people seem to be. Linus Media Group is a machine (company); in order to sustain the overhead associated with 120+ employees, they must continue producing (We are talking about the number of sponsor spots, merchandise sales, etc.). Do I think quality is suffering as a result of the fast pace? Of course Do I wish they produced less content at higher quality? Yes Would I support LMG's downsizing (20-40%) to achieve that goal and sustainably run the company? Yes Is it fair for me to ask them, a company, to do that (not to mention the disruption to employees)? Of course not It is a tricky issue... big company, big problems.

@@BlenderBrit I never said sack anyone. Just give people more time. If they need to keep the same upload schedule then they need to start planning a video more than a week in advance. They used to upload 7 videos a week, upon hiring more people they are attempting to upload more and more per week. This arbritary number of videos per week only seems to keep growing. Are revenue targets so important that its at the expense of the quality or validatiy of the content produced? Humans are not robots.

Please give your team more time to make content they can be proud of. The next product launch can wait. 11+ videos a week can wait. Get your core content back in order and take more pride in due diligence and your employees. LTT was great when LTT cared and took time to do what they do. Nearly every piece of content from LTT can be broken down to "This thing coincidentally broke", "I spent HOW much??", and "I water-cooled my pc with a pool simply because", with no evergreen or informational content being produced with any kind of regularity. Further, while I'm not a GN fan, your response of "they didn't do due diligence" is a bad one. They had no responsibility to contact you and they took all of the evidence that the public sees and boiled it down into a cohesive video. You guys did dumb/bad things, they called LMG out for it, and that's okay. Not everyone is out to get you; most people just want good content that doesn't actively harm other people for no reason. Lastly, constant, often, and repeated corrections should not be a status quo. Every now and again, sure, who cares. But, when you actively say something harming to a brand or product in video and then correct it with text at the bottom, you are taking a lazy and lackluster approach to journalism. Is this all a big deal? Each individual one, in a vacuum, can be excused and fixed. All of these combined shows a greater problem. This will inevitably blow over and be a nothing burger, but selling a small companies only prototype and then being heated that people are mad about it is an insane take. Improperly testing a product, giving it a bad word (regardless if it actually made a difference), and being heated when you're called out for it is an insane take. Being content with crunch, lackluster content, rushed testing, lazy corrections, and being heated when you're called out for it and excusing it because "growing pains" is an insane take. I genuinely enjoy content produced by LMG as a whole, but I had noticed the crazy amount of corrections, rushed content, and "meh" inspiring content before GN spoke out about it. I thought that there was a lack of content because of the focus on labs, but it seems more like bad communication from Linus, crunch for writers and editors, and a mindset of quantity over quality has been the contributing factor. LMG can do better, and it should do better. This is a transitional period, but that is not an excuse for bad reporting. I have faith that it *can* get better, but only a few can decide if it *will* get better or if it will be brushed under the rug and be allowed to just blow over.
@halvarf

Well put. I really hope the criticism is taken seriously at least internally. Shooting the messenger doesn't help. Sloppy videos like those exposed by GN can annihilate the substantial investments LMG made to the labs. Investing millions in automatic testing, a sound testing chamber, lab staff and more, and then not investing enough time in the actual end product to uphold the same standards makes no sense from any perspective. If the reviews aren't seen as trustable, no amount of spending on lab equipment can fix that.

Things feeling less personal, Linus being there as a required face to read a script prepared by a writer. The entire point of KZbin was to have that sense of informality and connection to the host - over what was previously available. Now it just feels like it is regressing to something like the very NCIX channel that Linus left. Seems like when you turn a KZbin channel corporate, you lose the plot a bit - and your audience is MOST DEFINITELY going to notice.

From the forum: There won't be a big WAN Show segment about this or anything. OR SO I THOUGHT... I wanted to evaluate it as a product, and as a product, IF it could manage to compete with the temperatures of the highest end blocks on the planet, it still wouldn't make sense to buy... so from my point of view, re-testing it and finding out that yes, it did in fact run cooler made no difference to the conclusion, so it didn't really make a difference.
