Let's be honest Ulduar could have been your favourite for a number of reasons, maybe it was the music, bosses, architecture or any other additional flair... Yet honestly we all know secretly why it's our favourite. Once upon a time in a casual raiding guild on a Wotlk server... Our raid team was exploring Ulduar, we would clear a new boss once a week an take our time, not reading guides or looking for spoilers unless we struggled an couldn't clear (hence the slow progress).... it wasn't until we went up to face Mimiron about 8-9 weeks after Ulduar launched that our guild... welll... As we approached one guy cried out " GUYS!!!!!! IT's..... THERE'S A TRAIN!!!!!" "no no, that's not a train, there's no rails... it doesn't even move..." Que the next 5-10 mins of our raid team searching around wondering wtf this was. blaming the raid leader (me) for taking the raid team down the wrong direction and us getting lost. Again no idea wtf i was doing ( i was 19 or so) . Then suddenly with half our team on the platform and a few on "the train" one guy finds the switch and "clicks it" With that there are gasps all across Ventrillo "it... it... IT MOVES?!?!" to which i responded "Finally i was waiting for sum-one to step up" those on the platform "NOOOOO! come back wait for us where are you going?!?!?!" one of the guys on the train "HEEELPPP, WE'RE BEING ABDUCTED...YOGGY'S TAKING US TO HIS TENTACLE LAIR" ( raid "general" would be filled with spoilers or what bosses did. one of the themes was that if you died to many times yoggy would get stronger and would devour your soul in his tentacle lair) after this episode my guild... my entire raid team... instead of raiding decided to spend the next TWO HOURS of the raid flying up an down an watching it spin around....in all it's glory.... epics? new bosses? a new cinematic? no no no un important..... a flying space train "FUCK YEAH!" no matter how far we'd get on additional raid content if we struggled to "get the kill" on a boss... at least one person would say "guys i know why we're failing we haven't got the train buff" another would say "no no, it's too soon, the lewt gods haven't been fed enough souls, 3 moar wipes should be enough" i'd then issue a ready check... this was to determine if people thought 3 "fake tries" to get the death counter up would be enough., naturally people said yes, new recruits they needed to learn... we would then pull/die wipe... over the next 10 mins, then a portal to Dalaran would then be made... people would fly to ulduar we would go in.... CLEAR all the the way to mimiron JUST to get to the train every1 aboard, campfire down...every 1 was commanded to "ride on the train, fully buffed" after it went one way and then back again, another portal was made to wat ever content we were on..... ( or people would log two alts join the raid an help summon the raid team back) an then then we would have THAT pull! the one you hoped would bring you glory..... lets just say we had an 80% (or so) success rate in downing anything after this "ritual" No other raid has ever had an effect like this in any other guild/raid team i've been in. everything is always "super serious" maybe it was just wotlk, or the silliness of youth or maybe it was just the "magic of Ulduar" whatever it was.... there's less than a month until we get to experience it all again an i can't wait 🤣

Ulduar was an RPers Raid. The hard modes were integrated into the instance design and not just some toggle. Things were discoverable. It is almost the polar opposite to ToGC which was literally a raid boss design expo with no RP features. Where ToGC had lifted the veil on raiding, Ulduar held the veil firmly in tact and embraced it. For people that enjoy raiding like hopping onto a ride at a theme park ToGC was pretty good, all the ride without the fluff. No trash, not RP "discoveries" etc. Just pure unadulterated boss fights one after the other. And as far as theme park rides go, the fights were pretty fun. Ulduar was exactly the opposite of this - it was a properly integrated instance with a story and "discoverable secrets" with trash, and integrated hard modes with an RP twist. For people who like RP in their MMORPGs Ulduar was the biscuit.

Ulduar is great, but don't expect it to be just as great the second time around. Did it on a private server and was very disappointed how much of the magic is lost once you've already run it one patch.
@danieldiggs95742 жыл бұрын
All magic is lost after the first time. Like getting back with an ex 10 years later . The sex ain't as good. Her looks are a bit older. Weight got put on. Age and boredom. That's why you can't go back in life ever with anything. It will never have the same feeling again. I really enjoyed Vanilla classic. I really enjoyed TBC classic esp as a Disc priest in PVP and a PVE healer. It got to the point where I was top heals in the guild over druid and shamans and in pvp I started out healing druids and becoming a target. I got bored but Wrath wow. I hit like level 71 and was done. I forgot how dull northrend was, how bland the gear is and how easy the game got and I played and raided Wrath more than Vanilla and TBC back in the real days of them. If Blizzard kept one TBC classic server going I'd probably be there. Kara was fun no matter how far into the game I got. Heck I was outhealing everyone in Kara gear heading into Sunwell. Had a mix of stuff. You know how pathetic Wrath is. I went into a Level 75 dungeon or so on my priest at level 71 and healed the guild. For laughs I put on Benediction, Truefaith Vestments and Hide of the Wild as well as Tier 2 BWL shoulders, belt and legs from Ragnaros. No deaths. No wipes. Did just fine healing the pally tank. That's when I knew I was bored. Went back to vanilla classic got my priest there up to level 42. Healed elite quest in Arathi other day taking on 4 elites at once with a rogue and was chaotic but fun. Prob. going to go back to vanilla. Rather run ZG, BWL, UBRS etc. once a week. That's just me. At this point I figured I'd go retail and stick to vanilla for nostalgia. Can do all the boring crap in Wrath in retail solo wise.

I have to be real a large portion of Ulduar's mystique is that it's one of the only raids that was followed by new content so quickly that it didn't overstay its welcome. People didn't really have a lot of time to get sick of it, so it's still remembered mostly fondly by those who did it the first time. But when I think back on it like objectively I just can't bring myself to gush about it, there are a few bosses that are really great and then there's some bosses which are just aggressively mid (though at least some of those are optional). That said I do hope people enjoy themselves, just don't set yourself up for this to be some euphoric experience where you have raiding perfection pumped into every orifice.
@jeremykothe28472 жыл бұрын
That is so true. Plus, the hard parts of Ulduar were opt-in, so you could "clear" it easily enough. Not like today's pug mode, but raids didn't feel compelled to get Yogg-0.
@cerebralisk2 жыл бұрын
@@jeremykothe2847 Yeah that does contribute to the legend of Ulduar, even people who did it at the time might not have gotten to something like Firefighter, Yogg+1/0, or Algalon before ToC came out and obsoleted the place. A lot of the difficulty in Ulduar comes from checks on coordination though we'll see what the pre-nerf numbers actually look like.
@andromidius2 жыл бұрын
I also think its variety really added to its appeal. Its huge raid. There's silly bosses, intense bosses, weird bosses and trippy bosses. There's not much trash (other then the beginning...) but the trash that exists is varied and interesting. The music is incredible. Its also a real test of a raid team. No hiding behind the pumpers and tanks knowing what they are doing - if you mess up, people know about it. Which can lead to drama, but it can also lead to people stepping up and becoming better players and for genuine comradery with people helping each other improve. And the loot is sweet too. Ulduar was when people start to feel genuinely powerful and some specs begin reaching their potential. Naxx makes Warriors look really bad no matter how good a player you are - in Ulduar glimpses of their future power can be seen. And healers become more then just health batteries - they really have things to do for a change. I don't know how challenging its going to be based on how different the playerbase is now. But I know its going to be a blast. If people can enjoy Naxx in its diminished state, then Ulduar is going to be a real treat.

Uldaur was the only time Blizzard did vehicle combat right. You got in your vehicle, you had time to push all of the buttons and learn what they did, you gradually used all of your buttons on easy trash to get used to them, then you used your buttons on the boss after you got the feel of things. Every other time in WoW it's just. HEY YOU< HERE"S COMBAT> Better read what your buttons do and figure out how they interact in the next 2 seconds. Oh, and if you all have to stack up, and you need to use a button to heal, Better type: "/ tar (player you want to heal)" or play click roulette on them because we're not letting your target their vehicle through a raid frame.

Hard modes are hard. Someone is going to kill it week 1, but a lot of people are going to get attitude adjustments. Maybe just the more casual guilds, though. Hard to tell.
@10N154T10N2 жыл бұрын
Ulduar wasn't a perfect raid. The biggest issue was, eventually, its size... however, the overall design of the instance was one of the best Blizzard ever had. The siege engines section leading up to Flame Leviathan was almost designed to get people to try Hard Modes - considering Tower of Storms was entirely out of the way. The better your raid was, the more towers you left up, the better the loot was, and the less time you had to shoot Iron Dwarfs. And shooting Iron Dwarfs got boring really quickly. Past FL you had 2 relatively easy optional bosses and the cockblock-002. Ignis and Razorscale will be farmable from day one, and will most likely be first bosses your raid is going to start skipping. XT is going to be, hopefully, the major obstacle early on that some dad guilds (no disrespect, I am in a dad guild myself right now) will struggle with. Especially if Bombs and Tantrums will be, once again, happening at the same time. Ignis and Razoerscale are designed to be sources of gear early on, with no hard modes to speak of. Eventually, they're skipped completely in favour of bosses located deeper in Ulduar. And that's fine! They serve their purpose early on. Past XT we got Assembly of Iron. This is the only council fight in Ulduar with its own hard mode to work on, providing more challenges -- but remaining optional later on. Kologorn on the other *hand* is very much a "don't stand in shit boss". While not optional, once players are used to his animations and patterns of attacks, he becomes relatively bursty. Also-- AoE boys got something to do here! After that only Auriaya is left, voiced by the wonderful Mona Marshall who you might have heard before in South Park ( as Sheila Broflovski, among others), and the Four Keepers are available. This is where Ulduar really kicks off. With the combination of binary and non-binary hardmodes, we have 4 bosses with 10 different killing permutations depending on how strong the raid is. The 1337 Teams will proceed to Firefighter and 3E Freya while dad guilds can chill doing normal Hodirs and Thorims, accumulating gear to eventually cover the skill gap. With Keepers down, the only boss I really hated, General Vezax was the last barrier before the Old God himself. Vezax felt like that guy who stays at your house party long after the music ended, and you technically can't leave him alone and show one of the girls "the upstairs". He is sitting on the couch, eating cold pizza, mindlessly looking at Netflix... You really don't trust him enough to leave him downstairs alone, so you have to take time to get him Uber back home, while what you really want to do, is show a girl a consensual good time using protection upstairs. Hated that guy. And General Vezax too. Speaking of protection-- Yogg-Saron is a 3rd and final "non-binary" hard mode in Ulduar. You're presented with 5 difficulty modes - 4,3,2,1 and 0 Keepers to work through, giving players a lot of potential for improvement on the last boss of the raid. Or is it? Technically.. there is one more... The secret optional boss, Algalon was a cherry on top of a very, very large cake. Even getting to see this fight with your own eyes made your adrenaline go up. While not more difficult than Alone in the Darkness, Algalon required players to do Firefighter, another infamous hard mode from Mimoron, among others. And the 1h combat time was an interesting take on the difficulty scale. For Algalon, most of the "fight" was happening on the forum, with people strategizing who to bring and what to do in the limited time they could engage Algalon each week. And yes, those hard modes are perhaps a little clunky, but they were very well designed to allow players with widely different skills to progress through Ulduar at their own speed. And whatever Ion says, I don't think that they could put together a harmonious set of bosses and challenges like that again, even if they tried. Unless you were an absolute top-level player, there was always something more to look forward to and achieve. And a lot of challenges were scalable to the skill/gear of the group. You're missing some of your top DPS this week? Well, maybe you won't do XT002 Heart Mode (hyhy), but you're not stuck on him for 2 hours because you can take him out in normal mode and push forward regardless. The raid itself, however, turned out to be too large for its own good, with early bosses burning people out before the "hard stuff" was even on the horizon. And no.. at the end of the day, fighting a boss on a higher difficulty level isn't a new fight and for some people, it simply wasn't that appealing. The final nail to the coffin for Ulduar was the release of ToTC exactly 4 months after 3.1. 16 weeks for the entire tier of this size was blazing speed-- and patch 3.1 ended up being the shortest major patch in Wrath, lasting only 112 days. Yeah, the Colosseum, with like 5 bosses was 2 weeks longer than the whole Ulduar. To give you a bit of perspective, the World First of "Alone in the Darkness" (25) achieved by STARS happened on the 7th of July. And on the 4th of August the next patch dropped. The release in the middle of summer was a kick in the dick for a lot of people anyway... and the fact ICC ended up being the only large-scale raid for 360 DAYS made the shortness of Ulduar oddly suspicious. Was it too good? Was it too large? Was the lore featured in it already in the retcon zone? Was the first ever image of round Azeroth too much to handle for some players? We will never know... Oh, if they're re-desiging some of this stuff, PLEASE, do something with the Dark Edge of Depravity. It carries the name of an iconic C'thun weapon... and it looks like Generic +1 Polearm. kthxbye

Christian Finnish Frostiis i've only tried classic back in the day on a private server (Pandaria was already out) and i rememeber being in a finnish guild and gotting to Naxxramas, i was very happy since i got a very "effective" meaning revealing plate armor for my Forsaken female warrior but we never got far. Maybe this time i wont be a lone wolf roaming the BG:s and actually move forward with PVE also :S

Ulda wasn't the 1st raid to have various difficulties, though. They did that with Sarth +Drakes, and the idea was even there as far back as ZG with the Priests just no benefit to not killing them. Ulduar was just the 1st main raid to focus on it.

I remember doing Ulduar10 back in the day. Never cleared Yogg (don't think the guild I was in at the time even downed General), but the memories are still there; having to clear to Flame Leviathan, skipping Razorscale and Ignis, downing HULK HOLOGARN, and then hitting a brickwall with the second half. I think I'll have much more fun this time around, since one, I actually KNOW how to properly play the game instead of just winging it, and two, I'm my guilds 10 man raid lead. I think Ulduar will be difficult for the first few weeks, but as soon as gear rolls in, clears will start getting easier. The playerbase has a LOT more info to work with than back in 2008, so strats and numbers will be figured out before the raid even releases (yay PTR). Not to mention the end of expansion talents and class balancing. Have people hyped up Uludar too much? Maybe. And with it being pre-nerf, maybe not hyped enough, though I hope Blizzard will be SMART about the pre-nerfs and possibly keep some nerfs that make sense from the course of Ulduars life span. Or with the general elevated player skill and knowledge, all hard mode Ulduar fights and Yogg-0 will be downed within the first week.

Full clear of all Hard Modes day one? I'm not so sure this time. Its entirely possible, of course. But this is a step up from what Classic has given us in the past. My suspicion is that 2 minute Hodir and Yogg-0 will be the main hurdles for a full clear. I welcome being proven wrong. But my gut feeling says week two will be the full clear this time. Or at the very least later in the first week as guilds shuffle around compositions to find the right balance. Its not a sure thing - and that makes it an interesting race. Naxx week one was just a case of "who can manage the fastest speed run?" because even the more casual guilds were taking it down in one night - it was just a matter of speed. Ulduar will have wipes, I just know it.

The only thing that would stop it dying Day 1 is if Yogg has too much health to be (modern skill and knowledge) mathematically unkillable without another reset of gear. I doubt that will happen.

If they take advantage of Yog's omnipotents across timelines, it'll be cool as hell if they include new voice lines with new mechanics. "You too have looked into the past to see my undoing? You know nothing of the infinite!" Suddenly throws down a unique mechanic the class crowd aren't ready for :P

I actually think pre nerf Ulduar won’t be a one day clear. The number of cheese mechanics available are fewer in wrath as are the benefits of class stacking. My guild was a notable NA guilds during og Wrath (Engina) and we never managed pre nerf yogg zero. The later hard mode fights like Mimiron, general and Yogg Zero are a step or two above the rest in terms of difficulty. So yeah I’m putting my money on the clear taking one or two weeks. Assuming there isn’t a cheese strat or exploit found to do it day one from ptr testing.

3.3 talents and class balance makes pre nerf ulduar easy. If you factor in the raise in ilvl, it will be even easier.

Even in classic, there are several types of guilds... yes, obviously they all more or less clear the raids but... For example - guilds that clear MC in 4 hours, or in 2 hours or in 58 minutes... Guilds that clear the new raid day 1 or day 2 or day 5 or week 2.... Even tho the difficulty obviously is on par with retail, its the speed that matters, nobody wants to do 14 year old content 4 hours, so even tho, the difficulty is small, challenges are still found, just because you cleared a raid, doesnt mean you did it easily... like said, doing MC for 4 hours, not rly enjoyable or fun or skillful.
