Ragnar actually says why. Both Ecbert and himself needed Athelstan, but he never needed them. Athelstan was knowledge, and the will to know more. He was very comprehensive, never judged anyone even after doing the worst of things to him. He was the purest example of humility, and the best example of a real friend. A friend that didnt want anything in return. Hell i think even I love athelstan.
