I do like their new labels. I'm not thinking about selling my comics. I like that they're valuable, but they're mine, all mine! I slab for protection and display purposes. The increase in value post-slabbing is a very nice perk, but that's all it is to me. PSA cases will be UV protectant. I'm definitely going to try their services.

Agreed. I’ve never been impressed by CGC. CBCS cases have a better label, cases seem to have more clarity, and UV protection. Value of the book means nothing to me once slabbed. Do it for the protection of books I care most about.

PSA is primed to bump CGC easily

CBCS did not overtake CGC, and most cited the reason was their unattractive labels. Well, I thought their previous labels were fine, but I think PSA's labels are horrendous. Bright white with a thin red line might look fine on sports cards, but comic book collectors, who appreciate art and a label that does not detract from their book, are not going to stand for that. And PSA has already said that they have no plans on changing their labels for their comic book slabs.

I agree with this. The primary factor to PSA’s success is going to be the quality of their case. If the first few years go without incident and CGC continues to have issues, I can see their market share dip enough that CGC could become number 2 or 3.

My biggest problem with CGC has always been that they required a membership just to pay them to grade comics. Since finding out about that I have stayed away from them. Now if I want a comic I usually will buy it already graded, but I still have a lot of ungraded from over the years. I know they lifted that restriction with their card grading a while back, so not sure if they did the same for comics. Even so, I am waiting for PSA to start grading comics. Kinda funny because a while back I was in a live stream chat with the CEO of SGC, and I asked if they planned to grade comics and he only said "just wait, there are some new things coming,", but here we are about a year later and PSA has already announced that before them. I was hoping SGC would start because I like the SGC case look over PSA's. Either way, like you said I'm excited for other competitors to get into the comic grading space.
@jeffstanley60133 ай бұрын
Would be curious to hear why you're opposed to the CGC membership structure. Is it just because there is/was a cost for membership? If so, two things: 1) there is now a "Free" membership tier that will literally cost you nothing out of pocket. 2) But they also have the "Premium" tier. It's $149/year, BUT they also give you $150 in grading credit(!). They're literally paying you $1 to be a member. So, it's not like Costco where the annual membership fee just goes straight to the company's bottom line.

Secondary Market will decide the fates of the Grading Companies. If Raw becomes more expensive than Graded, or if Modern Raw keys continue to be priced as graded, and grading becomes irrelevant, the whole thing collapses.

Funny you should mention car companies. Toyota put out a superior product in part due to TPS. Some years back, CGC marked an entire 25-book submission of mine as 9.0 (without pressing, most were re-submitted later and got a 9.8). I talked to several customer service agents and they all said what happened *can't happen*. Now... think of that from a quality assurance point-of-view. They could've easily taken the books back, cracked them, found they made a mistake, and worked to change their process so it doesn't happen again. But not CGC. They can do no wrong: the opposite of TPS, TQM, etc.

As one could have predicted m CGC fumbles yet again. While I can understand the unwavering support for CGC by many. CGC will be subjected to loosing customers to PSA as many are seeing whats to come. Mistakes are acceptable when happening here or there. CGC’s issues if not rectified will be a dismantling of their clients or prospective clients. PSA has had issues as all companies may experience during growth. Its the customer service and honestly that builds a reputation. PSA heading into the comic market is well aware of the risks and the community’s criticism. Im unable to fathom PSA not preparing to reshape the market and bring back what the comic community needs.

With due respect, you're talking about the conversation as if you hadn't listened to the conversation. The problem is not the CGC slab; the problem is the inner well. And why everyone is shocked by this is because it's never happened before. And PSA is not going to be a monster in the comic book market, not so long as they cling to that ugly label. Don't forget that the average comic book collector loves good artwork and wants a label that is not going to detract from the art/aesthetic of their book's cover. The main reason CBCS never got close to CGC was that the market didn't like their (now previous) label, saying it was ugly. Well, I would take the previous CBCS label 10 times out of 10 over that ugly PSA label. Bright white with a thin red line might look fine next to a sports card, but it is ugly and detracting next to a comic book.

CGC isn’t overhauling their slabs unless they see a significant drop in submissions. I doubt you will see that happen. PSA is not the savior. They have no chance to overtake CGC.
