I don't like watching people unwrap the gifts I give them. I feel like "thank yous" are awkward, and if they're alone opening my gift, they won't feel pressured to fake any emotions just to please me. When they're alone, they can express disgust or delight in their own privacy with freedom, sharing a moment with the gift itself. I also give them the gift's receipt along with the item, just in case they wish the return it in exchange for cash.

There's a problem with your understanding of economics on the "dead weight" topic. The manufacturers are happy. They didn't waste their time - because your grandmother bought the sweater. When one of the suggestions to improve gifts is "give cash", maybe it's past time to admit that we need to stop giving gifts on a schedule -- at least for adults. Buy someone a gift when it will matter, like a nice dinner to celebrate their success, a graduation gift, or a housewarming/wedding present to someone getting their first apartment or home. Then just give gifts for no real occasion, just because you think of something a relative or friend would enjoy but might not buy themself. And give when someone has a clear need, but maybe doesn't ask for help (or, of course, when they do ask). These times are much more helpful and meaningful for a person to receive a gift.
@kikihappy547 жыл бұрын
For gifts not on one's list, I believe that there are exceptions. A few years ago, on Christmas, my brother surprised me with a 3ft teddy bear, and it is easily one of the most thoughtful gifts I've gotten. I didn't ask for it, but it felt like I had been asking for it non-verbally, and the fact that he picked up on that made it much more special.

I know. This is such terrible advice. Give money?? Good gift givers know their giftees well enough to know what they want. That takes time and concerted effort to remember any mentions of wanting something but being unable to afford it, or feeling guilty buying it for themselves, or any hints being dropped. So much of our lives are already made into pure transactions. Holidays and special occasions are supposed to be about human connection not fucking economics.

I was given toilet paper as one of the gifts instead of something I actually asked for. The intention was either a joke or was practical which I'm not sure which one it really was, but I am actually secretly offended. I'm not the kind to want to share personal bathroom information, so it actually does bother me. Why is it any of their business how I clean myself? Do they think I can control what comes out of my body as a woman? Do they unconsciously think I'm dirty since they want it to be known that I use too much toilet paper? I had given a list of things I actually wanted. I don't get it, because if you get something from the person's list, you have a 100% success rate. I feel like the gift was because they thought it was funny. But I wasn't included or cared for with the joke. I don't usually get offended, but this does hurt my feelings. I wanted the things on the list too. The easier path from them would have made me happy. If someone tells you what they want, please get that.

I haven’t found anyone, including my wife, that wants to give cash. They are brainwashed into buying gift cards. I prefer to give the cash, including what I would have spent on a gift card, to a person instead of a business. I also ask if I can go with them when they spend the cash. That way we get some quality time together and generally I pay for a meal, a double gift for them. If it doesn’t work out, I ask them to let me know what they got. Nice things about an old fashion gift card are just about every business takes it for payment, it never expires, and no one has ever wanted to return it.. And not surprisingly, I’ve never heard someone say they re-gifted it. Haha. Have a great holiday!

ok has anyone gotten a gift that is work? Ok i just got 4 packages of bacon from my step dad. I am polite and say thank you. Also how much do i owe you, because that has come up before. He says nothing. Maybe just give me some when you cook it. I say ok. then he says maybe you can cook it and give it to everyone at Christmas breakfast. So basically it is him saying he is too lazy to cook bacon for Christmas and wants me to do it. Any ideas on how do i deal with this? My best guess is just never take the bait.. say no thank you, and let him try someone else. If i get mad enough i will confront, but usually do not like making waves. Gifts have no price, but all i seem to get from him are things he likes and needs me to do. Ok once i got a breville pie maker.. which is good, but im not a big fan of pies myself. later i had to use it to make 40 pies for his event for him and his friends. Is there a nice way to just say leave me alone? or do i need to get to homicidal rage before it stops?

eigentlichtoll02 Creative gifts: when you know of an item that can solve a problem they have. Such as knowing of a type of boot that will keep their feet warmer than what they have and you know suits their style. Especially if you are able to buy it and know they never would for themselves. Always losing their keys? There are products to help that. I think tiles is the name of a bluetooth thing you can use for that. Offer to provide a service like cleaning for them or free childcare/pet sitting. Pre-pay for an activity they enjoy and can redeem whenever. Biggest thing is putting aside personal interests for their interests. And when it’s expensive, be sure they’ll use it. Not that I assume you needed such a list but that’s what I’d suggest to the video makers. I too was hoping for more ideas.
