I remember listening to Garrigous lectures at the Angelicum so many years ago. He spoke a wonderful Latin. So happy I am still a Thomist in order to see through the Modernism.

Concerning two translations (among others) of Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange by Matthew Minerd, ON DIVINE REVELATION is 833 pages (volume 1) and 628 pages (volume 2), and THE SENSE OF MYSTERY is 296 pages. Concerning the overview (or larger context) for these wonderful books (and similar or related books), I am reminded of this statement by Jacques Maritain -- "It is written that God made garments of skin for Adam and Eve in their exile. In like manner, through His prophets, then His incarnate Son and His Church, He has made for us garments woven of words and notions to clothe the nakedness of our mind till the day it sees Him" (DEGREES OF KNOWLEDGE, page 243 in the Scribner's edition of 1959 and subsequently, or page 258 in the Notre Dame edition of 1995 and subsequently).

I don't see myself as being affiliated with any one particular outlet. My work is mostly my own affair, and I merely found some folks who benefitted from it at R & T. Also, I would add that I'm not solely Latin-Rite focused in my outlook, so I kind of stand in between various ecclesiastical groups. Great video, Dr Minerd is obviously a very knowledgeable scholar. I’m not a Catholic, and my view of philosophy is (broadly) informed by Kant. Nevertheless, I consistently find myself underestimating the great scope and power of Thomism. But it always seems like there is a great wall of incommensurability…

Glory to Jesus Christ! Dear Jim, Thank you for the kind note. Kant is the big boy of modernity - interestingly in part because of his connections to German Scholasticism. Yes, there is a huge communication wall often between scholastics and other schools. I’m very conflicted about this phenomenon. On the one hand I don’t like the hermetic style of so many Thomists. It can sound as though they are talking their own language just to each other. Dr. John Rist, whom I had for a class in grad school, hated this about Thomists. (I found out because he hated it about my writing style, and we had a meeting.) We differ on a good bit no doubt, but he was a real prince as we discussed this phenomenon. He and Msgr. Sokolowski made me very sensitive to this. Also, I learned my Thomism from the outside. My undergrad philosophy (done in Roman Catholic seminary!!!) was almost Thomism-free. So I hate it when I hear Thomists talk in a way that keeps people closed out, sometimes talking in English as though it were a direct proxy for Thomas’ explicit Latin. However, on the other hand I’m a big believer in the technical developments of later scholasticism. This requires a pretty heavy apparatus of vocabulary. And it requires also a HUGE buy in. (Thus, a mishmash of Analytic thought and Thomism is, in my opinion, a real non-starter. That’s not the same thing as saying dialogue is not possible. But Thomism actually did articulate itself for hundreds of years as a philosophy and theology contained within certain fixed guideposts.) Alas, I think that I’m just telling you: yes you are right about the incommensurability! But, I’m very glad that you popped in for the talk! The whole interaction between/ debt of early modern philosophy to Scholasticism is an extremely interesting topic (Hobbes-Bramhall debate on free will, Hobbes’ reply to Bellarmine, Spinoza’s Ethics (?), etc) I will be sure to visit your website and ask some questions after further exposure to the tradition. Roger Ariew has a couple of good books on the Cartesians and the Scholastics. Also, there were the studies by Gilson early in his career. Fr. William Wallace did a good deal of work on Gallileo and late scholasticism. (I'm trying to recall if there is also some stuff by Peter Machamer too.) Anyway, happy reading! Peace, Matthew

This man is a treasure of the church and yet his literary works are virtually unobtainable. Almost all of his books are OOP, I can only ever find second hand copies of questionable quality being sold for exorbitant prices. His magnum opus "Three Ages of the Spiritual Life" is particulary difficult to find due to the fact that the publisher of that volume (TAN Books) had to cease and desist all sales of the book due to a copyright claim. Can anyone please find out who actually has the printing rights to his works and see if another publisher can obtain them and maybe, just maybe get them printed again.

Glory to Jesus Christ! Dear Freddy, How funny! I've been telling Michael over and over that I've not abandoned them over there. I wrongly scheduled my return for the courage / temperance lectures. Then, I had to put the breaks on because my summer's end was crazy. I'm still getting out from underneath the pile. The only reason I haven't restarted the series is that I want to make sure that I can just keep doing the lectures in sequence (pushing on into ST III). The problem is that I have more media appearances coming up next month for my book with Ascension Press, and then I also start a series of lectures with the Lyceum Institute next month. (That stresses me out.......! I need to get that together.) However, I actually messaged Michael last night to say we should set up a "one off" lecture. We're going to do a bit of history on themes of philosophy and theology leading up to Vatican II from the 19th C. into the 20th. (This will let me use some course material for this semester, thus making it easier for me to do.) Keep an eye out. Glad you were over here - I do promise that the R&T series will start back up! Gardeil's Manual (perhaps supplemented by Grenier On Analogy (which is so necessary here): Anderson's Bond of Being + Simon's very important essay on the topic On the theory of knowledge in relation to Metaphysics, Regis' Epistemology is useful, though I also recommend Simon's Metaphysics of knowledge Although I have some differences with him, Owen's Introductory Christian Metaphysics is very good (though a bit more than an introduction, truth be told) For the philosophy of God, see the Natural Theology text by Anderson, as well as the _Cause of Being_. Above all, however, see Garrigou's God: His Existence and His Nature If you have Latin, See Gredt, Maquart, and DeAndrea. (The last is very difficult to get. It was only by happy chance I got it myself.) Well, that should give you a good start to the races! And as Avicenna says in the beginning of his Metaphysics, being and essence are what is first conceived by the intellect" - Aquinas On Being and Essence I never bothered to look up the reference in Aristotle before. Here it is: "This being clear, we must go on to consider the questions which remain. First, is there an infinite body, as the majority of the ancient philosophers thought, or is this an impossibility? The decision of this question, either way, is not unimportant, but rather all-important, to our search for the truth. It is this problem which has practically always been the source of the differences of those who have written about nature as a whole. So it has been and so it must be; since THE LEAST INITIAL DEVIATION FROM THE TRUTH IS MULTIPLIED LATER A THOUSANDFOLD. Admit, for instance, the existence of a minimum magnitude, and you will find that the minimum which you have introduced, small as it is, causes the greatest truths of mathematics to totter. The reason is that a principle is great rather in power than in extent; hence THAT WHICH WAS SMALL AT THE START TURNS OUT A GIANT AT THE END.
