One of my first videos that went popular was me going into a generic supermarket bakery and trying out baked goods from Germany... little did i know that this was almost seen as a crime against Germany and it has taken me this long to redeem myself and really find out more about GERMAN BREAD CULTURE!

The important thing here is: Go to an actual bakery, where the bread is baked right behind the shop where it is soled. Not a supermarket where frozen stuff from a big factory is reheated and soled as "fresh".

As a Canadian who lived in Hildesheim for 7 years! I cannot agree with you more. One of the things I miss most about Germany is the bread and buns. Nothing better than running to the bakery in the morning for fresh gretchen for breakfast. And the wonderful, crispy, flavorful, thinly sliced, dense bread for supper. We had a truck that came twice a week with bread and buns and cake! Oh the Tortes! I loved living in Hildesheim and the bread made it even better!

Bread is so important in Germany that our dinner is translated as "Abendbrot" direct translated evening bread. A break is a "Brotzeit time to eat bread". Art is often referred to as "brotlose Arbeit" work without money. Swear word: stupid as bread

The reason for German bread culture is that the growing areas of several species of crop meet in Germany: three kinds of wheat, two of rye, and at least two of barley. Furthermore, the different climate zones allowed different dough processings with yeast or sourdough. Barley can’t be use for solid bread but for liquid bread as Germans may call beer.

You are absolutely right . If you culture sourdough and keep it alive over years. This specific culture has a taste of the country, region or even the city / village where it has been cultured. So let's say you import an alive sourdough culture from Germany to say Sydney Australia it will change over time to this specific space and not be the same again. 👍😊😷

Just like they say about Italian pasta, that there is a special type of pasta for every type of sauce (or vice versa), there are certain types if bread that go with certain types of "toppings". Some baked goods can be enjoyed by themselves, others with just some butter, then there are breads that taste phenomenally with jam or honey, others go well with certain sausages or cheeses, but not with others... And all this varies from region to region.

I just bought a special bread from the little bakery in our village. It is produced only ones a week and contains "emmer", the old original type of wheat. They are famous for their bread and rolls, so every morning there is a queue in front of the shop, while the shop of the bakery chain on the other side of the street is empty!

It takes you three years of apprenticeship to become a learned baker. Not even a master baker, this will take you another couple of years. And you will get up in the middle of the night, when everyone else is asleep, so people have their fresh Frühstücksbrötchen right on time, and you'll do that 24/7/365. No wonder German bakeries have a Nachwuchsproblem: Not many young people want to become a baker these days, unless it's a family business. Out of three traditional bakeries in my village, two shut down, and a big chain took over. I know you won't get rich being a baker; but isn't there any pride anymore? I'm traveling to work by bus (good-bye home office!), and I have to change lines near a bakery, and I put down my face mask and take a deep breath of that smell of freshly baked bread, before I put the mask on again, enter, and buy something. Sometimes it's two Brezeln for a snack during the day, sometimes it's a loaf of special bread for the weekend. Honestly, I couldn't live without German bread for too long. I was in India for a while, I sat in a taxi, and I saw a roadside sign, "German Bakery". I shouted "stop!" to the driver, and then "this way!". Worked out fine, I had a pound of genuine German bread, and met some nice people.

You realize the bread-roll you have there is not t"the typical" kind of roll? The latter's upper is crusty, i.e. you couldn't dent it with your finger-tip - it'd rather crack at that spot. What you have there looks to me like an "Milchbrötchen" - a more all-soft and rather sweet kind of pastry-roll that goes best with sweet spreads like e.g. Nutella . Apart from that I'm glad for you to have realized the difference between the bread from one of the countless bakery shops that belong to large chains and get their dough from large factories and the real craftsmanship of the artisan bakeries. In that sense; Guten Hunger !

Bread is older than beer - because: Women were in charge to brew the beer (not the men!) and they found out that it works best, when they do it next to the bread oven - they did not know why, but it worked. It was because the yeast of the bread sat down on the water/grain-mixture and turned the sugar (malt) into alcohol... It wouldn't have been invented without the bread - and the women of course!!! 🙋‍♀️

Two tips: if you are in Hannover look for a baker store of Back Geschwister. They now run the Bäcker Gaues Shops and Bäcker Gaues bread used to be the equivalent of a three star meal. Maybe the bread still is of the over top quality. Next time you visit the Hildesheim market square, look for the Gerstenberg-Verlag building. I suppose, you rarely have such an old company in Australia

Bread is a huge thing in Germany. Germans notoriously like to travel, but everybody I know always says upon coming back "finally real bread!" There are a lot of reasons for it. One is the GErman appreticeship system. In order to attain the rank of "Meister" (master) you have to create something new or a new take on something existing. Another reason is basically a political metaphor. German bread isn't entirely German. Our bakers offer French baguette and croissants, Italian ciabata, Turkish pide etc. all produced by highly trained professionals. So we do not only protect our heritage and tell people what to eat, a competitive bakery has to offer goods from around the world.

In fact what is special in Germany is not bread, It is bread, bear And sausages. The connection is easy. Bread is made of cereals. Beer also. You also can bake a bread out of the tester from making beer. Beer was original brewed by the houswifes as well as they baked the bread. Later there where bakeries, making bread out of sourdough. After breweries where established, the breweries gave yeast to the bakeries. Not only that. Beer was used also to cleans the water. During brewing the dirty water became drinkable. And now the last question: what do you want to put on top of bread? That's where sausages came in. As bread was the the main meal, sausages was the topping, bear the drink, now you know why this is so related. Most people today don't know anymore. In fact, the meal "Brotzeit" in this peculiarity you can find only in the south of Germany. And only in Franconia it is still more present in it's historic form. With one exception. Franconia is parted in Wine-Franconia and Beer-Franconia.

The German customs of rolls and bread live mainly through the infinite number of different multigrains and whole grains. For example this bakery( which i don´t know, but there are a good selection): baeckerei-preissing.de/broetchen-croissants/#top my favorite (in my area) is the "Winzerbrötchen" Your bread at the beginning looks like an bread from the netherlands or an sweet bread or an "german" "brötchen" in the US(or Australia? i have never been there ;-)). and i also explain the difference, why even German bakeries in the US(or Australia?) cannot produce original German "Brötchen". It's simple, it's the flour. I don't know what for examle in the US doing with it, but you can't make a "Brötchen" with it, i think it´s too fine. ;-)

Bakery bread here is nice, supermarket everyday bread, especially sliced is the worst crap ive ever seen. Its literally stale and horrid when Sold. Far better in the UK and other countries. Id not say the bakery breads here are the best from the Countries ive visited or lived, they are nice though and not the worst for sure, just not as amazing as unexperienced and traveled think lol

is german bread so so good ?? and is there even something called german bread ???? is the bread on Rügen the same as bread in Hamburg Frankfurt (Oder) Berlin or even in Munic ? or is it just loads of regional breads and cakes ??? first of all ( my opinion ) it isent german bread ( if there is something called german bread ) that is so so so good. Its english and the bread that the english took with them to their colonies that is so so so crappy. thats why a person comming from a former british coloni is so amazed by german bread. ( its way better than english bread ). But one reason that German bread is good. Could be germanys location. it has the right climate for groving the grains nessesarry to make good bread. it is located in the midle of europe witch means that its surronded by other contrys with their own bread culture. and like in many border regions people are learning from each other across the borders. that germany wassent a single contry 160 years ago also playes a big role for german bread just as for german beer. ( german sausges are even more complicated ) So is german bread bad? No it isent. Is it good than ? yes it isgood . But it isent so so so so good. its just good bread. ( my bad the freshness of bread also plays a big role if the bread is good. the more bakeryes there are the more different kinds of fresh awaileble breads there are. ) ( sorry for my poor english )

You're overstating the bread regulation thing. Nothing is preventing you from baking any kind of bread you want and calling it whatever you want (except mislabeling the ingredients maybe)
