Germany surprised most onlookers by starting this EURO2020 with a change in formation. Joachim Low switched from a back 4 to a back 3. Against Portugal, in the Group stages, they blew the reigning champions away putting 4 goals past them.
So this new formation is working. But why?

They played well in all three games. -Better side against France but unlucky and unable to shoot properly -Portugal -Hungary scored two, exceeding the xG by far, but Germany's two goals fitted the xG -I watched the games and the only true problem was Havertz and Gnabry sleeping on the field against France and throwing transition phases away

France's case was just of undervaluing their opposition, clearly France didn't have to play rabiot and pavard as wb, but they thought the Swiss side won't be strong enough and played with . France should have taken more care and imo they should have played 4 at the back, with pavard and kounde as defensive fullbacks

They still dont deserve to win but this game wasn't won by England because of their smart line up or tactics, it was just germanys poor defense and lack of creativity, offensively Englands bench is better than german start line up and they still couldnt create a lot. Southgate is a horrible coach. Same as Löw. If Flick becomes Manager and Southgate remains I can almost guarantee that England will get destroyed. And I'm not for Germany or England.

As maligned as he is, I think Werner needs to start over Gnabry. Low keeps asking Gnabry to make all kinds of runs in behind and decoy runs to open up space, which he is capable of doing, but he's naturally more inclined to start wide and drive in as opposed to to starting in and driving back out. Even if Werner isn't lethal, he will at least make those runs nonstop and will be a hassle for the English defense. Besides, Hummels picking out passes for him will add another dimension to attack.

It’s rather a Belgium style 3-4-2-1, as Havartz and Müller are deployed as a kind of double 10, who roam to overload a side or making deep runs into the channels, instead of keeping the play wide as wingers.
