WHY is it an UNWRITTEN LAW to put the ONIONS on the bottom of a Hot Dog in Australia?

In Perth it seems the sizzle is served on a roll, in Melbourne it is only a slice of white bread. Same $3.50 price and I suspect slightly shorter sausage too, matching diagonal length of bread slice plus a little over. As for charities, the organisation for charity changes each day and week. Supported are all community, local sports clubs, scouts, help groups and so. Bunnings provide the sausage sizzle facility, tents, grills etc. I am not sure if Bunnings assist with supplies, though I have noted as the sizzle runs low on bread, people running the sizzle have dashed to nearest supermarket for a number of additional loaves of sliced bread. Also experienced that towards end of day, they have run out of tomato sauce on occasion. The ' Sausage Sizzle ' makes visiting Bunnings a worthwhile stop on weekend days, even when not really needing to shop there.

Many people don't know that Bunnings provides the BBQs, tables, gazebo etc and all the charities have to bring is the food and the volunteers. It is a wonderful initiative that has been going for at least 30 years, which is when I was involved raising funds for my son's local scout group. Bunnings themselves have also organised their own Sausage Sizzles, manned by their own staff, to support the SES (State Emergency Service) and the RFS (Rural Fire Service) during recent Bush Fires and Floods. When that happened with queues were at least 50 to 100 people long. Supporting charities when you visit Bunnings is a national institution and source of pride. Note....When you have a Sausage sizzle, wrap a serviette around the bottom so the onions don't fall out. BBQ sauce and Mustard is also a great combination.

I was going to say it must be a Westralian thing, but it's been a while since I had a Bunnings sausage inabun. I might have to go and check it out and find out where the onions go. Yeah mustard and tomato sauce, and 'bin doing that for as long as I can remember (and that's quite a while 'coz I'm older than you are Lee). I've actually manned the BBQ on a few of those, for school P&C fundraisers mostly. Bunnings supply the annex, the BBQs and the gas. The fundraisers do the sausages, bread, onions, sauces, and donate their time to run it. You have to book with Bunnings to get the facilities and they are usually booked out well in advance. Every weekend, both days, every week of the year, all different charities. Bunnings murdered the suburban family owned hardware store, but the sausage sizzle is iconically Aussie, and a lot of community groups and clubs would be worse off without the fund raising. The UK is missing out.

I was wondering if you'd get to a Bunnings and have a sausage. Bit of an Aussie institution, but most Bunnings don't do full sized hot dogs like you had. It usually just a beef snag folded in a piece of white bread with onions (on the bottom! - controversial, I don't know if my local Bunnings got that memo yet, but I haven't been to Bunnings in years) and about a $1 last time I went, so that would have changed I'm sure. The proceeds are always for a local charity or kids sports of some type. You get to wear yourself out wandering the endless isles of hardware and homewares and recharge yourself on the way out with a cheap and tasty snack that supports a worthy cause. You're suppossed to eat the onions not drop them on the ground Lee. I'm with you on the mustard and sauce combo. It's the future indeed! I picked that lady as a Kiwi straight away. It amazes me how many Kiwis are in Perth. I don't know how they deal with the heat. You don't know British Paints? Rolf Harris (ugh🥺) used to be their spokesperson. He'd drum the top of a can while asking, "Trust British Paints? Sure Can!"

Bunnings used to put onions on the top. Here's the reason we were given in NZ. There had been a few incidents with people tripping and injuring themselves on the dreaded fallen fried onion. So the decision was made to put on the bottom to reduce the risk them falling out to avoid accidents. So hes right. Bunnings are very big on safety. So mow its onions first

4:20 Bunnings didn’t TRY to open in the UK they did open in the UK. They bought out Homebase and rebranded their existing stores. One of the first Bunnings stores was near me. I really liked it and we went regularly. They had lots of quirky products that you don’t normally see, presumably imported from Aus. Did not partake of the sausages though. They had insane levels of staff, you couldn’t find a place in the store where there weren’t multiple staff in eyeshot. I wasn’t surprised they struggled financially. Less staff and less money spent on doing up the stores and they might have made it. The store reverted back to being a Homebase again after they pulled out

It is NOT an unwritten law to put onions on the bottom. Onions ALWAYS went on top, with tomato sauce and/or mustard. In NSW we call them Sausage Sangas (sandwiches). They are NOT hotdogs. They are a single slice of white bread, butter optional, a BEEF sausage, optionally topped with grilled onions, tomato sauce (NOT ketchup), and/or mustard (I prefer English mustard not that American crap). The only reason onions are on the bottom now is because a few modern imbeciles who can't watch where they walk, slipped on some dropped onions. Of course, in the modern world, everybody needs to be wrapped up in cotton wool because they can't take any personal responsibility for their own actions and the nanny state has to implement stupid laws to protect these babies.

Nothing strange about taking your cat out for a walk! There's a chap in London, I forget his name, who takes his cat around on his bicycle, with him. He's on the tube.

Second, if you, for whatever reason, wanted to go to my hometown there’s now a few new restaurants here in Larvik🇳🇴. And third: that onions in the bottom sausage looked so good that I had to eat!!

Blimey not seen a Woolworth store for years, presume it can’t be the same business that went bust in the UK a few years back. The lady from Belfast was amazing “Four Candles” absolute classic. Sausage sizzler surely a hot dawg with onions.

talking of B&Q, thier big warehouse in Worksop, I joined them as Engineering and Facilities Manager in 2005 and retired from there in Feb 2022. Massive place with load of automation, 110 acre site, 1,000,000 sq foot warehouse all to move a packet of screws (plus othet stuff) Always have ketchup and mustard, hangover from Costco's £1.50p hot dog and unlimited drinks, and its a big bigger than yours!!

You're missing the point about the Sausage Sizzles. They are for helping different charities. 😀 Australians are a generous lot and they always love the chance to have a Sausage Sizzle for brekky while helping out a mate at the same time. 😀 It doesn't hurt that they collected their DIY supplies for the weekend at the same time either. Thanks for giving us a good idea of what the big B&Q warehouse is like. 😀 I used to work as a researcher for the building and construction industry so I found it interesting. 😀

WA looks like they do sausage sizzles a bit flasher than the rest of Australia (and NZ too), all the ones I've ever been to just have a slice of buttered white bread- I would far prefer a hot dog bun though! I definitely always go with the mustard and tomato sauce as well as onions, can't beat that combo IMHO.

Yes. WA had bunnings before the east coast and the sausage sizzle was already a tradition in WA with the bun ..when they expanded to the east they just gave you a slice of bread where as in WA it would of upset the locals so they left it as it should be 😊

Back when I still had my Greyhound the onions and mustard had to go at one end of the hotdog; sharing was kind of compulsory and hotdog stalls were the first place she'd head to at fairs and other outdoor events 🙂Apparently onions are unsuitable for dogs...

Hi Lee, just for the record, a sausage sizzle has always been a sausage sandwich between 2 slices of bread, not bread rolls. Wouldn't be the same otherwise. Just been to my local Bunnings here in Sydney and pleased to report that they still serve sausages and onions in bread - they hadn't heard of the bread roll thing, so that must be a Perth thing. They also said onions on the bottom was a 'Facebook Furphy'. Said if you hold a sausage sandwich in the palm of your hand and turn it over, the onions will be on the bottom anyway. So, it's not an Australia-wide thing at all. 😊

It's just us West Aussie who are classier and have bread rolls, we don't do stingy slices of bread here. Some places even do buttered buns! West is best!
@AmandaMitting
@AmandaMitting 10 ай бұрын
Also the onion on the bottom is a rule here in the West, was major headline on the news when it happened, very controversial!! Apparently it's due to some trying to sue them from slipping on onions, plus there's less onion dropped inside and outside on ground/floors to step on, less flies to attract.

Wrong. Bunnings sausage sizzle is from WA and was originally in a bun ..when bunnings eventually expanded to the east coast you were given an inferior version..the traditional bun stays in WA and is the superior version..imagine thinking a slice of cheap white bread is better 😂

Onions first........ such a little thing but if it stops one person falling and potentially having a life changing injury, it's worth it. I know of someone who fell due to an untied shoelace - broke his hip, 6 months in hospital and rehab, never quite the same after the accident. I HATE the nanny state mentality but a little common sense is always welcome. I'm surprised the sausage sizzle hasn't taken off around the world! It's such a nice community thing.

It was the untied shoelace from his own shoes that somehow got caught up as he was moving about. Such a silly little thing but with major consequences. You can't prevent every accident and you'll go nuts trying but a bit of common sense and awareness never goes astray.@@davidnorton5887

Onions first makes the sauce be directly on the sausage for better taste anyhow. lol.... Hi-Viz For sausage eaters - sounds a great idea - helps with the "tar and feathering" later on. - onion droppers, tut tut.....

We only get bread slices on the east coast so rolls are a new thing to us. The pet thing in Bunnings is starting to become a problem, let's just say, you wouldn't take your dog, unless it was a working dog, down the aisles of Sainsbury's or Morrisons.

There not Hot Dogs. Hot Dogs are an American thing with highly processed sausages. Our Aussie Sausage Sizzle is a Beef Sausage, usual from a butcher or as Butchers call them 'Steak in a Case'. Its a classic Aussie BBQ staple. Us West Aussies are classy and have ours in a bun where the rest of Oz is cheap and has theirs in a slice of bread.
