What's frustrating for younger generations is that older gens are complaining saying they're just lazy and entitled, and saying "when I was your age I had my own house." But what they don't realise is that minimum wage hasn't increased at the same rate the cost of living has. My grandparents have lived in their house for 40 odd years and because of that their rent is only £700/month (3 bed maisonette, London), whereas the average flat in London is £1200 (1 bed). Council tax is still based on the economy 20 years ago, mortgage providers give more to people who are already able to save more, in London our average house price is double the rest of the UK which is insane. In order to buy a house (average price of £488,729) you need to be earning about £3000/month after tax to pay for utilities, council tax, mortgage repayments, and also food and other expenses - The average wage is £2250/month before tax, no where near compensatory for the cost of living on your own.

However, I continue to wait with baited breathe for someone, anyone, with a captive audience on television to state the obvious: In the words of Michael Jackson, "they don't really care about us". Please, someone have the guts to join the dots and stop asking "why is this happening" and come out and say why this is so. Because the country, no, the world, is run by narcissistic, sadistic, twisted individuals who know very well what's going on and continue to let it be so because it benefits them. No election is going to fix this, not while "campaign donations" a.k.a. bribes are legal. This needs to be said with gravitas so it can sink in; the people running your life don't care about you.

The same as No. 10 Downing Street, where head of government lives. So government did not give the queen money to refurbish Buckingham Palace, just like if No. 10 Downing Street is refurbished that does not mean the money is for the prime minister. Buckingham Palace like most heritage buildings costs a lot of money to maintain, it is not like they can demolish it. For some reason he hates or trying to direct hatred to the Queen. Where my mum lives there is a very large green space. For years there were rumours that houses were going to be built on the land. Around two years ago the company Cala homes began building on the land. At the time I thought they were going to get affordable houses with a smattering of slightly more expensive ones with a few shops in the mix as well. Instead the cheapest house on sale in the new development cost £800000 however for the exact same amount you could buy a house in the surrounding area with at least 7 bedrooms. Instead these companies like Cala homes are catering towards the top 10% whereas people elsewhere are struggling to get by. This development also closed down a school and because of this the local primary school has had to add 3 extra classes into the current building and because of the influx of people coming from the new development, the school has had to build porta cabins that are not connected to the school just to try and keep up with the demand. By the way this area is Cults in Aberdeen and many more developments like that are happening across Aberdeen and putting far too much strain on the area.

It's better business to build high-rent housing than low- or even middle-income housing. A building will take several million to construct from scratch, no matter what, but charging $2000/mo to rent vs $700/mo means a much higher rate of return for the investors. America also has a housing crunch as bad (if not worse) than the UK, and developers worrying more about ROI than their impact on communities is a huge factor why.
@firstname48655 жыл бұрын
If people with middle earnings can't move out of their affordable house that means you'll never get that affordable house. Time to stop building up, there's hundreds of council houses in the city centre of leeds or 5 mins walk out I should say, knock them all down, build high rises. No parking needed. They're in the city so can use public transport. Problem solved till more immigration comes, longer life expectancy and more birth.

Something else I've witnessed first hand, local councils will allow private companies to build housing with conditions (e.g. "20% of these homes have to be affordable"), but never enforce it, so land that could have been used to provide homes for the people who actually need it end up being turned into luxury apartment complexes. 2 or so years ago my boyfriend and I saw a billboard advertising "affordable flats" in our city centre. We weren't looking into buying at the time but thought it was great that the council were listening to many people's concerns about no affordable housing being available. 6 months before these flats are due to be available for sale, the billboard changes..."luxury apartments," none of which were below £500,000, with a "Penthouse" above it for £1,500,000, which still hasn't sold (because if you had that much money, you're not going to spend it on a 1 bedroom apartment when you can buy a multi-bedroom house for half the price). Turns out the company that had bought the land had agreed to make 20% of the housing affordable, then changed it to 10% because it wouldn't be financially viable, then 5%, then 1%, then nothing. Other companies had done it to new builds in 3 different areas around the city. And people say it's because young people "just need to get better jobs." PISS. OFF.

Seriously. By the time. My generation get out of school- - not mater our grades we’re all living on the streets. Why doesn’t all the governments just calm down with all these raising of taxes and house pricings? If you think about it. House used to cost a quarter of what they do now. At some point even less. So what makes the house different from then? (Excluding renovations, and anything the tenant does to the house to improve it) Does the government want us all to drowned in poverty?. The money loans we are in-depth to for our whole life helps the bank which helps the government. But if the government doesn’t help us. Then the government won’t have a future population to govern, because we will all be too poor to do anything but ask for money on the sides of busy street corners where the more fortunate don’t even spare us a second glance.
@matt_dobson06147 жыл бұрын
The reasons why house prices are rising is down to basic economics. An increasing demand for housing due to an ever increasing population, being met with inadequate increase in supply causes prices to increase. I don't believe the housing crisis is entirely the government's fault. It is difficult to control immigration and it is also difficult to control people's ambitions. 50 years ago, most people would have been content just to have a roof over their head. Now however, everyone wants the best for themselves and competes for the best housing, which just causes prices to rise even more. I also believe that the fact that our population is ageing is having a serious effect on the availability of housing. More and more of the elderly choose to stay in their homes, paying extortionate fees for home care, when they really ought to be in retirement homes, where they don't have to worry about a mortgage, just the cost of staying in the home. When the elderly become unable to look after themselves adequately, the should move out and allow another family/individual to move in and live their life the way they previously have.

There are empty houses everywhere, I live in Sacramento CA, capital city of the 7th largest economy in the world and even with a 20% vacancy rate housing costs are ridiculous- people want $300+ for a couch in their living room, I'm in a poorly converted garage and paying $500 a month cause there is no cheaper place to go. You go to San Francisco or New York the price for single room apartments will average from $2100 - $2990 for New York and San Francisco is about the same. They say space is at a premium but it ain't and the people who push that nonsense are the people get the rent payments. There plenty of unused land with nothing on it but grass and an occasional tree and there is miles & miles & miles out here and 1 out of 5 residential structures aren't being used........ But rent constantly rises, jobs disappear & pay less in real life cause wages have been the same since the 70's but everything costs more and, while people are starting to make an issue about $15 minimum wage I am on disability, I don't get half of full time minimum wage I don't even get the amount I qualified for because CA counts my federal disability money as earned income against the state contribution. I mean are you really telling me that increasing our population by the population of Hull each and every year doesn’t add extra pressure? More people wanting houses = more demand for houses = higher house prices! It’s not that difficult! So, to solve this issue, we need to... A) Drastically reduce stamp duty. ...and... B) Drastically reduce the amount of people entering our country each year. This would be done by having a five year pause on unskilled immigration and having a points-based system that priorities higher skills and higher earners, meaning we can fill the skills gaps we have in our economy without having to increase our population so drastically. Would anyone like to give me a counter-argument???

Look around any city or large town and you're likely to see a few office blocks that are and have been empty since they were built, which in some cases spans over 5 years. These glorified safety deposit boxes stand on land that could be used to build apartment blocks and provide relief to the housing shortage en masse. But the government would rather offer tax incentives to the investors who have a couple of million £££ burning away in their pocket on the premise that uk property assets will go nowhere but upwards. There would be no shortage had previous governments not decided to encourage the average joe to snatch a buy to let mortgage on the basis that all you needed to do was charge rent above what the actual mortgage is. These overnight property entrepreneurs have picked up all the slack in the housing market by purchasing multiple properties: 1) Introduce buy to let mortgages 2) Average joe snaps up 2,3,4,5+ houses as a result of relaxed borrowing 3) ...Which results in house prices increasing due to perceived 'shortage' of houses... 4) ...Which results in a reduced number of people able to get on the property ladder who have to resort to renting, which results in an increase in demand and an increase in the cost of rent... 5) ...Which results in an increasing number of renters unable to save enough money for a deposit... 6)...Which results in house prices increasing due to perceived 'shortage' of houses... 7)...Which results in a reduced number of people able to get on the property ladder who have to resort to renting, which results in an increase in demand and an increase in the cost of rent... 8) ...Which results in an increasing number of renters unable to save enough money for a deposit... You get the picture. It's cyclical and someones great idea of a short term get-rich-quick scheme of yesterday has massive implications on the future of not only todays youth but everyone in society. The cycle needs to stop but the landlords who were savvy enough to weather the storm of the recession are out of danger now. The wheel of greed will keep on turning...until the banks finally run out of ways to make money at yesterdays pace.

I work Night shift, so my wage is a bit above what most would get on a regular job due to the whole unsociable hours thing, but even so, I look at what I earn and what I spend (which is more than I did a month ago as I can now finally drive and have a ridiculously high insurance rate on my tiny little car), and I try and wiggle what I can out of it to eventually try and move out. I still live with my parents, but I pay lodge, partly because my dad has epilepsy to such a degree he can't work (and he gets basically nothing in help, honestly it's ridiculous), and things are hard, especially with trying to have a life when I'm sleeping when everyone else is awake. Without the bonus from my night shift hours, I'd be wondering how ANYONE was able to live on the wages and expenses we have in today's world.

David Tiareh I bought a house when I was 23, saving hundreds every month with my disposable income. Bought a brand new car at 26, took holidays in the US, all on the average UK wage as it was then. Who can do that nowadays? Very, very few. And I was just a truck driver, not a city trader. The cost of living has skyrocketed, wages have stagnated (except for the rich) and it ain’t gonna get better- ever, not in our globalised economy. I’d go back to the late eighties/nineties like a shot! Oh yeah, the music was a hell of a lot better than today’s crap too. And we didn’t have 60% of the population fat or obese, weren’t bothered by transgender rights being shoved down our throats either. We weren’t under blanket surveillance by the state, we lived in a free country. Today’s England comes right off the pages of Orwell’s nineteen eighty four.

When i was talking about the 1900's, i meant the early 1900's- 1940's and down. But my point still stands: APPRECIATE about what you have because almost ANY OTHER time period means that you have a very, very crappy life.

David Tiareh Even in the Edwardian period, children exceeded their parents achievements, earned more than their parents and the cycle would continue as it has done for most of human history...until now. Every economic indicator shows the widening gap in inequality, half of 18-35 year olds are living with their parents, crappy zero hours contract jobs offer no chance of getting a mortgage or affording rent charges. It’s naive in the extreme to expect any improvement in earnings in the next 20-30 years. I feel lucky to have grown up in the time period I did. I feel incredibly sad for your generation today and the one to come after you.

Instead of pressuring the government to build more houses in more expensive areas, pressure them to build offices and factories in less busier cities and towns to create jobs there. The prices of houses will even out across the country when people don't think all the jobs are only in bigger cities.

As someone who's applied for council housing and been told, in a round about way, to fuck off I completely understand this. My sister was sent to womens refuge housing after a court case with an abusive boyfriend, it took theme 7 mouth. She slept on our parents sofa, so that her 5 year old had a bed. She was basically homeless the entire time and was just told there was no room. This isn't an anti imegration rant but I've had a Russian family, come into my work place, 3 times a week or more spending over £100 a more and they have councel houses. You may ask how how I know this, they live in another council house next to my friend, who spent 3 years on this list, waiting for a house close to the hospital for her disabling illness. My uncle and his family had to privately rent because they count get a council house, thier landlords decided 2 m ounth ago to put up the rent by almost £100 a month. This is a tiny 2 bedroom house with no parking, gone form £480 to £555 a month. In other words, we have a crisis that's not getting solved. Wether it be lack of jobs or lack of housing, and our government couldn't give a flying fuck as long as they have thier houses, cars and children in elite schools. It's disgusting.

My parents and I looked at this recently as we live in Jersey and it can be extremely expensive nowadays. A friend of mine who’s a teacher had to pay over £326,000 for a flat and my parents compared that to the 1990s in Edinburgh where they bought a flat for £20,000-£30,000. They found that the flats they bought then have now increased to a good £150,000

Ring King many have 2 jobs, 3 jobs and still can’t make ends meet. Don’t tell me they’re not working hard. Half the population of this country has nothing in the bank, most of the other half has less than 500 quid. It’s the same in the US. That’s called a failure chummy.

Dude, you think having 3 jobs is a holiday? Having no money in the bank despite working 3 jobs is a sign of success? Half the people in this country are broke, most of the other half have less than 500 quid in the bank and only TWO per cent of the population have £5,000 or more in savings. That's called a failure chummy, and dude, it is exactly the same in the United States. Personal debt is at ridiculous levels, rents and mortgages go in one direction while the hard working man's income goes in the other. I used to believe as you do. I made a success of my life because of those opportunities that were there in the 1980's, opportunities that have long since disappeared over the horizon. Having to pay 50 grand in student loans to end up with a box on your back, working a zero hours contract job for deliveroo would not have allowed me to live the life I went on to achieve. My heart breaks literally for the young generation today and the one that follows them.
