Same situation happened to me. I had a rent controlled apartment in NYC. The building sold, and the new owner wanted everyone out. Small building, only six apartments, and the new owner bought the building with three of the apartments already vacant. He wanted to remodel and increase the rents to market rate, which was about three times what I was paying. There is a formula for calculating the amount a tenant should be paid in this exact situation. I told the new owner I would leave without a fight if he paid me the amount this formula told me I should be paid, which was $60,000 USD. He lost his shit. Started yelling at me that this was his building, not mine. I reminded him that I had a rent controlled lease that I could keep for life and that I would be gone if he paid what this formula published by the housing department said I should be paid. I had lived there for 10 years. We negotiated over the coming months, and I ended up leaving for $45,000 USD. I decided to leave NYC instead of looking for a new place there. I live in South Carolina now. Best decision I ever made.

South Carolina is nice and full of areas not yet touched by the housing crisis, and hundreds of square miles of undeveloped land. It's quite a lush area, and could become a new area of housing done right. Of course, the way the market's going, and especially with how Republicans vote there, it'll likely just end up another target or rapaciousness for speculative investors. Our homes need to stop being on the market for speculators, we need reasonable limits on how much of affordable good homes can be scooped up by private equity.

the qualities of the struggles of getting from 1bn in assets to 2bn is different than from having a rented apartment to being able to live in said apartment for another month. some might even assume that both these interests even exclude eachother and that one guy's struggles of getting richer might negatively impact the struggles of multiple people being able to afford rent for another month (just a suggestion food for thought). also I don't think he was referring to himself as tenant as a business owner but I guess he meant being the producer of a KZbin channel

They clearly are well enough already to buy more properties to rent out. Most people can't get ahead in this economy in large part because housing prices are incredibly high. He might even be earning over a quarter million dollars a year by now. Ok, if he has to restart again from scratch he'll need to get in at the ground floor and take a low paying SWE job. But even then, he'll surely earn more even as a Junior SWE for more than he has ever before earned during any year in his life in his business! Heck, he can quite probably even earn DOUBLE what he has ever earned before even in his first ever real full time job. And within a few short years he'll be at a six figure income. As he clearly has the technical skills and ability to do that! (ok, maybe is weak in some soft skill areas based on the vibes I get from his videos, but that can be worked on) He seems to however have a delusion that being a KZbinr means he can earn more. Maaaaybe, in the long run, but that's like hitting the lotto jackpot. Or becoming a pro athlete. Far more "fail" than get massively big. He also seems to think being a KZbinr will mean more "stability" than a full time job, which I'm afraid is the opposite of the truth. You're very much living based on the whims of the google algorithm and whatever are the current market fads to keep trendy with that. There are good people, there are people only as good as the world lets them be, and there are bad people. I think most people are inherently selfish, so the best we can hope for is society coerces them into pro-social behaviour. 14:14 --> You'll see the exact same thing here in the US, whether others want to admit it. The only difference between Canada and US is the US's reserve currency has allowed them to print enough excess capital to be so reckless... for now. With ZIRP being over, I'm seeing the exact same thing coming to America: Concentrated wealth that either acquires or red tapes competitors. The remaining business market will just scam each other for crumbs since it's clearly not a competitor friendly market.

Rent controlled contracts have inherent risk to be adjusted or otherwise ended prematurely by landlord, and this risk increases with bigger delta to market rent
@RobertElderSoftware4 күн бұрын
Even with rent control, my rent still does goes up ever year, but it's capped at increases of 2.5%. There is an 'above guideline increase process' to request higher increases, the rate of housing inflation here in Canada far exceeds that. I've only lived here for 7 years, so I've only be able to enjoy a few years of the benefits of rent control. Some people have lived here for ~30 years.
@TehTahSpa4 күн бұрын
That capped rent does somewhat mitigate the risks, but nonetheless if average rent increases way more the point still stands. The correct route would be building enough housing to decrease apartment prices and rents(see Austin Texas for example), but typically nimby etc makes it very hard. That 30 year long living in rent controlled apartment is like winning the lottery :D

I think some of the people that are "not on team Robert" are unconsciously self-reflecting on their situation. This is amplified further by the positioning of your videos to be nagging your problems unto the viewer, in which the viewer themselves already have a set of problems. It becomes a self-reflecting situation and people respond differently. Some might understand and empathize because they have the same problem. Some might lash-out and telling you just face your own problems, because they themselves don't want to have extra stress on top of their own problems. In essence, your videos provide a somewhat valid point. The way people receive it, be it unconsciously, triggers a realization on the societal problem despite the differences in response.

You are correct about the issue of productivity. There is no way the way society and the economy functions is sustainable. In fact, it ultimately doesn't function. We're only given an illusion of functionality. One of the biggest issues taking place is that all of society nowadays is built upon debt rather than wealth. The "rich influencers" that we see on the Internet aren't actually rich. Like you said, everybody is basically trying to screw everyone else. For things to work out, it almost seems like we need to pull an "Office Space" on all of the big players, the government and corporations. The problem with this is that it's arguably unethical. I'm not sure what to suggest for you. When i graduated university in 2008, i had no idea what to do. We literally got screwed by the government and corporations then by being told "too big to fail." What a crock. Basically, ever since then, I've worked minimum wage jobs, then moved slowly up the ladder with smaller companies to ultimately end up working for myself doing lawn care and snow clearing. And now, when people are rude and expect me to do things that i don't want to do, i just tell them no and walk away. It may not be prestigious or highly profitable by any stretch of the imagination, but as an ethical individual who has no interest in screwing other people over, I've found honest work that i think is productive. I'm not sure what to say to help you, but i think checking out in some way is putting your best foot forward

Isn't it fascinating that when a Republican president does something bad, that president and/or the republican party are blamed by name. When a Democrat president does something bad, it's simply 'the government'. Virtually nobody says "Obama bailed out the banks" or the "Democrats bailed out the banks", it was "the government", or "we bailed out the banks" or "the banks were bailed out". That it had bipartisan support is completely irrelevant. The Iraq war had bipartisan support, and yet Bush is to blame.

It's more complicated than that. Current home owners in a community vote to disallow further construction in that community to prevent their houses from depreciating in value.

I had the same question back in 2009 when I decided to learn Linux. I was somewhat of a maximalist back then and just decided to use Gentoo, as it was perceived as one of the "coolest" in the Linux community (that was my comprehension). It took me two weeks to install KDE but in the process I learned so much it helped me with the CS degree, and later in the job as well. I think I still manage to live off the knowledge I got more than a decade ago, and I haven't really had to learn more than what I already knew after installing Gentoo as my main system xD Man, I still remember how happy I was when I managed to install printer drivers and be able to scan at 600 dpi 😂 I'd say give it a try in a virtual machine, and just build your own distro. It's hella fun. If you mess something up you can easily revert it by making copies of the virtual disk when reaching milestones -> got loader, got filesystem, got package manager, got drivers/systemd, got X / Wayland, got multimedia / printers / whatever. When I did it there was no backup plan, I just copied everything I had onto external HDD, formatted the system and loaded into Gentoo boot drive. But today I think you can pretty much clone the virtual drive structure into real HDD/SSD? There's even more hardcore version of it, called LFS (Linux From Scratch). And I think less hardcore would be something like Arch? Oh, and today I just use Ubuntu as it's a default distro for WSL2, and it was standard distro in my first full-time SWE job. It has everything I need and you can find any solution to your problem on the web easily. So my "evolution" looked like this: DOS -> Windows 3.11 -> 98 -> 2000 -> NT -> XP -> Vista -> 7 -> Gentoo -> Ubuntu (WSL2). Back in 90s my family (dad and older brother) also played a lot with different *nix distros like QNX, Slackware, Red Hat, there were so many of them I lost the count. Still remember myself playing Tux xD Oh and reason why I use WSL2 is because I'm a gamer and also make music. For me it doesn't make sense to switch to Linux full-time yet, not until they have better VST support. I think gaming is much better today though. But once VST is there I'm going to abandon Windows forever - it only wastes my time recently. I don't want to try and replicate my audio setup with WINE, as it would be just opening a can of worms. But I'm hoping the support would continue to improve.

I think its very good that you mention the struggles of small time landlords, that helps to see why people might be inclined to defend landlords in general. We must prevent that all we ask of the tenant board (or (local) government) becomes to be more on the side of tenants, with other people asking the opposite. The tenant board also needs to distinguish between small time landlords and big bad landlords like your landlord. Small time landlords also compete with big time landlords, so it's not just tenants vs landlords. The last thing we want is for the tenant board to help your bad landlord under the guise of helping small time landlords

Wdym, the skilled labor shortage is because of emigration and a lack of funding in education, immigrants are making it slightly better because they're coming here because of the high paying jobs. Also we had a housing crisis before immigrants, they're not making it better but evicting thousands isn't going to fix the fact that *we have more than enough houses and the issue isn't a lack of units but an unequal distribution of units.*
