I did a Higher in Media Studies in high school, which is Scotland's equivalent to an A-Level. Man am I glad that the one and only Media Studies teacher in the school just barged into our English class and put on a presentation all about the subject and why we should choose it. He's your typical anti-"The Man" '70s punk, too. I was hooked from that moment and I was SO into the subject going through the classes for the following four years. Really good stuff. Sometimes I forget that so few people know about the things you can learn in that subject, which is really sad. Makes people seem so blind at times. Also, we got to watch a TON of films.

Had me looking for the tab where I left the Super Mario World soundtrack on, only to find that THE CALL WAS COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE.

I was a music major when I started college (then changed my mind) and my aural skills professor said something similar about once you get good at hearing chord progression you'll know almost all music sucks. And I remember having this whole complex about still actually liking pop music quite a lot because not everything has to be complex or intellectual or dissonant or whateverthefuck. I think it's true, understanding art shouldn't make you hate it.

I never expected anyone to mention a Ludo song in a video I'm watching, especially in 2020. Good video was just elevated.

In America we either call them "Mrs." Degrees (for a woman going to college for the sole or primary purpose of meeting her husband, because really, what are you doing with your family studies degree, exactly?) Or a fluff degree, which seems to have a pretty close meaning to the Mickey Mouse degree.

Ah I've got one of those so called Mickey Mouse degrees! In Video Game design in specific. Every step of the way I was pushed to applying the art skills I was learning to the hard sciences at the very least, even by my own teachers. The bias against media is everywhere. But to paraphrase Robin Williams in Dead Poet's Society, "art is what keeps the human spirit alive" and knowing more about it and how to talk about it can only improve society

Very good video. I chose Media Studies in college just because I didn't know what else to do as a fourth choice. It ended up being by far the most interesting. I recall lessons about how media tries to change our perception of politics and always wonder how different the votes would be in elections had more of the electorate studied media. I assume we'd have a very different government right now. I also recall one of my teachers making the same joke about media studies ruining out enjoyment of media. However, as you say, it has only enriched my experience with the media I interact with. I do not regret choosing media studies as a subject.

when I think of media theory/media studies I think of my favorite game, The Last of Us. It's a great game but people tend to get really uncomfortable when I bring up how the narrative treats its black characters. Every named black character dies by the end and all but one, Riley, die on screen. This isn't to say that white characters don't also die but it reflects trends in media, especially media headed by white people, where black characters die graphically in service of the white characters' development. And in a world that continually devalues black lives we need to look at the stories we tell and how they're told.
