The Roman Legion theme really sells the Ultramarines for me. Their durability, resourcefulness and dominance for such a long period of history really reflects the XIIIth Legion. Discipline and loyalty are what makes great Marines in my opinion I feel no one tops them in these areas. The Horus Heresy series also gave some more character to them with some dark themes and concepts introduced in the 30k rulebooks. Imagine the Imperium that 18 Ultramarines Legions could have built...

Your history with Ultramarines sounds very similar to mine, only I'm in the US and a little bit older. I actually tried to start playing in Rogue Trader with Ultramarines, Dark Angels (who wore black at the time) and Tyranids, but nobody played. When I found other people to play with, it was the launch of 2nd edition, and the first codex released was Ultramarines. I had a bit more money and/or ways of trading other people for miniatures (like trading the Orks in the starter box with somebody for more marines), and even though I ended up building a little bit of just every Imperial faction that got a codex - just to paint something diferent - I stuck with Ultramarines as my primary, because I had more of them and blue armor was lucky. I still have a whole company from the 90s and have started collecting again late in 7th edition after having quit about 2/3 of the way through 3rd edition's lifespan, once again keeping my Ultramarines as my main faction because I have so dang many of them already.

I'm an Ultramarines fan too. I get into 40K when Humblebundle gave away the Space Marine game for free. From there I found the Uriel Ventris novels, the extended lore, these videos and now I'm painting an army. I think the Ultramarines have a lot of fun lore, and they're an interesting faction. I think it's quite interesting when you read an Ultramarine novel and watch them try to balance their strict adherence with the Codex and their beliefs with the grim outlook of the universe. Plus there is the way that while the Codex is a big help to them, it can also be a hindrance, weather that's because they are slow to adapt to a knew, unknown threat like the Tyranids or because they end up punishing a loyal captain for breaking the Codex even though he saved a whole world. There's a lot more to them than just the memes people share. As an aside, my house colour in primary school was blue and the name of the house was Aquila suppose that could explain my loyalty to the Imperium....

When I was going almost every weekend for AirSoft shooting I dakkadakked about 2500 BB's in 4-5 hours for 2 years. Bottle of 3500 BB's costs ±12€ as I used premium brand, then add parts of gun which broke from wear&tear, cost of transport etc.etc. and we get something like 1000€ per year. That's in tabletop 40k equivalent of 2,5k army painted by commision painter in tabletop standard, so for 2 years of ASG(probably paintball or fishing too) adding cost of gun/eq one can get two armies painted in tabletop+/++ quality. My point is that all hobbies taken seriously cost about 1,5k$/€/£ yearly and if someone wants have hobby then must deal with it - quiting smoking and drinking would give money for 40k+ASG and still would get some cash left. I've quit drinking 5 years ago and got about 15-18k of 40k minis plus some miniature boardgames, oldschool Chronopia(3,5k points in 40k standard) and big paintingu workshop(airbrushes, 50 quality brushes, 200 paints, Dremel, clockwork files etc.) in 5 years, so I don't give a shit when I hear that it's expensive blablabla
@anblueboot53644 жыл бұрын
great assumption that people are wasting so much money for alcohol/cigarettes lol yeah warhammer might not be that much more expansive compared to different hobby but when I look at fishing it's : oh you have an actual tool amazing ! or if someone starts with Hema : wow you got some nice fancing gear + a good sword (which can end up extremly expansive) or LARP : wow you got an amazing functioning outfit great !! my problem with all the miniature hobby is : you pay 40 bucks for 6 miniatures ! (might want to start with infinity) but I think there are also price tags around : 1 miniatures = 30 bucks this is something that even compared to lego, which in itself is completly over prized, just feels kinda too expansive I lack the feeling of getting something worth the price out of it, it feels that so few plastic miniatures just shoud cost less. Let's make 6 miniatures 15-20 euro/dollar and it already feels more reasonable and incline with what I'm willing to pay. I bought lord of hellas like a year or two ago, don't remember. it has 50 something minis which aren't too high of a quality(cause they're just some army bulk, still better than risk miniatures by a lot) but the 5 heroes, and something around of 9 Mythical creatures + 3 gigantic statues and I payed around 90 euros, like I have no problem and willing to pay for that. But it just felt I got more out of it. Especialy when it comes to miniatures, the fact that I have an in itself completed game just helps, cause normal board games with out minis can be around ~ 50 euros. The only thing compareable in 40k are those army starter packs or the 2 player starter pack the only downside or upside might be that beside kill command most people don't play with such a small army ^^" (but those things are kinda in the realm of what I find acceptable beside the fact I don't get the army I might want to play with) at least that is the feeling I got when looking around my tabletop shops and see people playing

The XIII. fight to protect all normal humans instead seeing them as servants (at best) like other Chapters. I restarted around 18 month ago and got some Horus Heresy boxes, and started with the XX. Legion wich is very....(metallic)blue-ish 😅. Thanks for this great Video and best wishes from northern Germany.

Even in Grimdark, it's natural for Space Marines to wear bright out-of-place colors to serve as a highly visible beacon of hope for Imperial Guard/citizens, especially in battle (and possibly a "come at me" challenge to the enemies). I also think people getting vehement over others' toy soldiers is a good thing: it means they got a harmless outlet for the kind of feelings that in other circumstances push to, say, get vehement over whether a woman should hide her hair.

That took me back to early 90's too. I was a kid in a model shop and bought the space marines box (mark 6 with beaky helmets) Just because they looked cool. I knew nothing else about them. The box art showed them painted as crimson fists (if I remember right) and there were pics around the sides of the box of other example chapters. My goto back then was crimson fists just because of that box art (and dark blue is better!!). I do remember Ultramarines getting all the attention in white dwarf though. Followed by blood angels,space wolves and dark angels. It lasted a few years for me... until now, as I'm back into painting mini's to relax and step back and, I must say, the lore is amazing now compared to then. Love your video's,especially the Lore but I also appreciate your painting journey and it feels like quite a parallel with how I've come back to it. It's amazing what you can learn to do with the access to information and lessons today instead of studying pics on a monthly magazine. Keep up the great work, It's much appreciated.

I used to work in an injection mold place a couple years back. we worked mainly in plastics but sometimes did different polymers and whatnot. anyway, we would make 200-500 casting an hour of these little rings that would fit around certain machine parts for different factories. a company would come to us and say "hey look we need X amount of these with these specific dimensions. my boss would say "sweet, that'll be 2 grand" or whatever. i remember asking him why we charged so much when the raw plastic we used was cheap as shit, he told me the machines only have about 17 months of use before they start to break down. the injectors themselves begin to crack, the heating units that heat the plastic begin to falter, etc etc. those fucking machines are very very expensive too, i remember once the boss had to pay almost seventy grand (nzd) to get most the machine replaced. i think thats why gw charges so much. well, that AND gw are tight pricks lmao
@juusovuolle82514 жыл бұрын
well there is that for sure if you consider a small business run by a skeleton crew but we are talking about multi national business with amazing revenue who out sourced the smelting to be done by a chinese contractor. and in GW sized business they can just make hughe bulk orders cutting down costs even further I don't think that these two are in correlation with each other. Just bunch of greedy cunts is what I'm saying.
@VeritasAbsoluta4 жыл бұрын
@@juusovuolle8251 They are. Their prices ahve gone up above inflation even though they're using plastic and resin now which works out cheaper than the white metal or lead that they used to use. When you take into account the difference in price for materials they use then it works out that GW are charging more than double what the price should be if their price increases matched inflation since the 90's. In addition, the last time I looked at their year end accounts it showed their turnover going down but their profit going up. This means they're making more net profit on every model sold than they were before.

My reasoning for following the Ultramarines was pretty much the same Luetin. While I don't collect (or paint) the minatures, I have followed the universe and owned all the copies of White Dwarf you've shown in this video (brings back some fond memories) and played quite a few of the computer games (Chaos Gate being one of my favourites). I also have collected some of the Horus Heresy series audio books, and take a keen interest in the traitor legions fall to Chaos, and their reasons for doing so. My favourite 'traitor' legion being the Alpha Legion, bizarrely enough. I think that came down to the GW lore of 'Little being known about them' back in the late 80's and 90's, and piqued my intrigue and interest. Blue IS my favourite colour, and as it happens, I too was in 'House Blue' at primary school. I was introduced to 40k via Milton Bradley's 'Space Crusade' table-top game and the subsequent C64 and PC spinoff computer game. I see in your video that your early painted minature is a 'Space Crusade' minature rather than a true Citadel Minature from the full 40k game. I do own a 2nd Edition copy of the Warhammer 40k game, and a couple of extra squads of Chaos Marines (Khorne Beserker Squad, Nurgle Plague Marine squad, and a Rhino) although all are unpainted. The Ultramarines do come in for a lot of 'stick', by the fans, that much is obvious. 'The Smurfs' being the most common derisive nickname i've seen attributed to them. I see a lot of commonality in people's love for certain factions in 40k being AS tribal as support for football teams, in general. It therefore can be assumed the passion levels (and the hatred conversely) of other 'competing' or rival factions will be at least as strong as the same such rivalries between football fans, but thankfully (hopefully) without the added hooliganism, except in the tabletop battles themselves lol. Liking your videos (irrespective of your army choices), keep up the good work. ;)

My Sister in Law does crocheting...almost all day long shes got a crochet needle in her hands. She burns 2-3 hundred USD on yarn a month... 40k's painting side is a massive amount of work. If you can enjoy the painting, it will keep you busy for eons. I have so many orks i am still painting....i dont see myself ever running out of stuff to paint.

Places outside the US and Britain get shafted pretty hard, Australia gets anywhere from 30% to 60% markups on the GW range, recasting and eBay are the main options for buying models here.

40k as hobby is not that bad some people spend loads of money on gacha mobile games. TCG are also expensive if don't go to trade binders or secondary markets. At least when I buy a box of tactical marines will get tactical marines and not a chance to get said items from a pack or a gacha roll.

@@saberz6615 "Lootbox" mentality. Tons of small payments doesnt feel as expensive as it is, when in reality its even worse. I know several big MTG fans and most of them have more money invested in paper than i have in plastic. Btw i have 17kpts of 40k between orks and admech lol. So having more than me is not a small number. Yet they never claim they felt like they dumped too much on it....

I love how you paint your Ultramarines, sticking with the bright blue w/yellow trim even on the newer models. A lot more visually striking than the now-standard dark blue and gold, imo. I know this is an old video, but I hope your army of Ultras continues to flourish!

I’m new and I went Ultramarines because I bought a leviathan box set and one of those little kits that came with some paints and a Space Marine and Tyranid, so I basically just had the colors and rolled with it. I do love the blue and gold color scheme.

I was introduced to 40k by a friend at about age 12 and my first purchase was a box of Epic Space Marines and a box of Epic Orks. My favourite colour is red. School house colour was red. So Blood Angels was my choice. We got to go to a couple Grand Openings of Games Workshop stores armed with a bunch of money off vouchers from White Dwarf for those specific stores. I started with the Space Marine epic main game and Space Hulk main game. Then moved in 2nd edition 40k proper at the next Grand Opening. Coming home with the main 40k box and Dark Millennium supplement was overwhelmingly awesome. Just so many rules and wargear cards. Warhammer Quest, Necromunda, Gorka Morka & Blood Bowl were all added to my growing list of Games. Every 2nd edition Codex. The release of the box sets of Imperial Guardsmen from the different worlds. I was there for the introduction of Cadian shock troops and my favourite Catachan Jungle Fighters all in 10 man box sets made from lead. These were added to my collection as soon as I could afford them. Necrons, Tau & Sisters of Battle were created and released while I was deep in the hobby. Three whole new armies to understand and learn about. Then came 3rd edition and the end of the hobby for me... shame really but I couldn't reset my brain as I'd memorised the entire 2nd edition wargear book. Every weapon, short range, long range, hit modifier, strength, armour penetration, damage and any special rule. I could reel them off on request. 3rd edition seemed to streamline the game and do away with a lot of the detail of weapons that I'd grown to love. Roll forward 20-25 years and image my surprise to find out 40k is now on 8th edition. No one thinks of Necrons, Tau & Sisters of Battle as new anymore, like I still do. Cadia is gone and the Galaxy is in a whole new level of danger. There are more than 2 Hive Fleets now? And Primaris Space Marines are above and beyond "regular" Space Marines. Wait... when did the Emperors finest become "regular" in my head? Being so deeply into the law and history of the hobby. Being there as it grew. Then dropping out for so long and coming back to the law via videos on here has been a great experience. Seeing old friends that feel familiar but have changed so much.

I don’t mind the Ultramarines one bit. I‘ve actually painted the six marines from the First Strike box as Ultramarines Even tho I don’t think I‘ll play them later. On the pricing: something that should also be considered is the fact that GW can produce their models for drastically less than 20,30 years ago. These plastic molded sprues cost literally nothing (props tho for still making most of them in the UK) and designing the models has become mich easier with 3D software. I think it would be fair to drop the prices of everything by about 10%. That would be enough for me and still make tons of profit for GW. Something we should note tho is that GW currently puts a lot of their profits into rather risky projects like the Eisenhorn and Angels of Death series, which we should be somewhat thankful for.

I got into 40K by inheriting an old friend's >12k pt Space Wolves army after he passed-on. He was insane regarding detail, the army was his passion, and I told him I would take good care of it and field it when I could, as an honor to him, and I do. I have gone through and touched it up, to try and keep it up to date, and I've added 25-30 pieces, mostly artillery, tanks, and vehicles. If I had my druthers, I would have probably chosen a different chapter, likely the Salamanders, but I do love the Vlka Fenryka and they're in my top 3. So my Wolves tend to be a bit melee-lite in favor of arms, with Salamander auxiliary and ecclesiarchy.

Hey Leutin, I really empathise with what you mean about the scope of tutorials available today compared to the past. I started collecting and painting at 3rd edition and by about 4th edition I had given it all up (attempting to paint and convert a 1500pt ork army deeply broke me) until 2 years ago! Since then, I've been utterly amazed at how high the painting bar has been set with so much sharing of tutorials online (compared to the grim-dark void of the 90s/2000s). I've painted up a full 1500pt imperial fist army and have given the converted ork army the detol smite to start one more time... Wish me luck...

Why would anyone think that Ultramarine aren't an obviously good choice? Yes, of course there's the point about mere preference, and blue is as good a reason as any, but I think there's a lot to recommend Ultramarine above other factions. They are the quintessential Space Marine, apart from some Guard (and of course some Eldar and Tau) the boys in blue are the good guys of the setting and, therefore, our avatar in that universe.

Can say it's near the same for myself but in a modern setting sense. Only got into collecting these past 2 years. Still today, Ultras are the main face of 40k and as a outsider, it was what I always thought of whenever 40k came to mind. My biggest push too get into the lore was the Space Marine game, the main character was a badass Ultra and I wanted that experience. The colours also are very catchy, blue with gold/yellow is very pleasing to the eye. I then got into collecting and then began the lore hike and climb to absorb. Yes Ultras are the boy scouts, the plain toast in a sense team to go for. But some serious stories and characterization has made them so likeable to me. Still not played a game not really involved in a group or site to talk about 40k much but as a collector outsider, it honestly feels that the Ultra hate carries on simply because it's the cool thing to do. Great video, per usual. Nice to know others keep to the blue due to growing into it.

It seems my early 40k experience very closely matches yours. Though not quite as limited in internet access, I was very limited in funds and only ended up collecting ultras because they were in the starter set and was what were shown on the box (similar to my prior experience making airfix models). I was only able to get a new box of models once in a blue moon and my only access to info/inspiration was the very early GW website (which was still seperate from their online store) and my friend's 3rd/4th ed catalogues. Me and my circle of friends even pronounced 'Abaddon' in the same way as you did! I even pronounced 'Tau' as 'Tai-oo' for a while. Not long after though I repainted my limited army collection into my own custom chapter colour scheme (an ultras successor appropriately) and have stuck with that scheme ever since and cant even consider painting anything else for a SM army (save for one squad of deathwatch).

My first army was Ultramarines, just because at the time I liked to paint what I saw on the Boxes. then I learned the lore behind the Ultramarines and liked them even more. Nowadays, my ultramarines are mostly relegated to the shelves, and my Crimson Fists are my main army (mostly to avoid the Ultramarine stigma, and because I read a tale of 4 warlords when the Matt Ward codex came out that featured the Crimson fists. Once again I fell in love with their lore and switched). I think I should probably update my smurfs soon, as they are still mostly comprised of the battle for maccrage guys

Interesting story. I recently got into collecting 40k miniatures and the main reason why I ended up choosing space marines was because the marines themselves have always reminded me of clone troopers, and as a kid clone troopers were my all time favorite thing from star wars. Even the color scheme I want to paint them is heavily inspired by the applications of color on the armor of various clone trooper legions: a white base with primary color compliments.
