Nobody wants a fruit tree to fail to thrive, produce, survive, etc. Yet, we sometimes find ourselves asking "Why is my fruit tree failing?" Trees are individual life forms that have specific growing needs. Cameron: This vlog is a you tube orchard classic, featuring two of the best!.. We are in Northern Nevada - Reno, Nevada is in the Sierra foothills, at 5,000 feet - this area is not actually 'high desert', as is so often misstated..Reno is only 20 miles from Truckee, California - Truckee is a town which has often led the Lower 48 in annual snowfall... Though the winters here are often cold and long, our young 4 year old fruit trees are growing faster.. Thanks again for the sage advice from both you, and the renowned tree expert Tom Spillman...

I'm a Reno native (moved to SoCal as a kid)! I think I'd still characterize as "high desert just based on geology and the type of plants and way things grow there. That aside, snowfall isn't bad for many deciduous trees while dormant. The thing that often sinks them is extended periods of deep freeze (in the negatives). Glad to hear you're are growing well!

Love your channel. Im learning a lot from all your educational videos. I have a question. I don’t have the best soil. I would like to grow fruit trees in containers. I have very large tractor tires. Would it be Feasible to grow fruit trees inside Tractor Tires ? What is your take on that? Thank you for any advice you can give me!

As soon as you said you had a tree that didn't produce what was expected, I KNEW it was going to be a peacotum. I thought I was lucky finding that variety, but the thing won't fruit!

I just planted a Bella Gold last week. Picked it up at my local nursery and looks pretty mature for being in a pot with six thick scaffold branches. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a dud. I'm in zone 10a.

It just hasn't been a winner in my climate, even still a few years later! Which is a bummer because it's got a gorgeous scaffold.

Right on time! I have been disappointed with my plum tree I planted a couple months ago. The heat has been brutal here in N. Cal. I've tried not to overwater it to avoid waterlog. But, the leaves are battered and the tree looks like it's struggling. I will stay patient though. Hopefully, things will turn around. Thank you.

It so tough to wait it out, Shonda! But tell me you've got a solid 3-4 inch layer of mulch on there. It works WONDERS on protecting a tree's roots and maintaining decent moisture and soil temps

i have the bella gold peacotum the cotNcandy aprium and nectaplum all across from each other.... im on my 2nd year and from good to great vigor im expecting some blooms this year but no fruit yet....... in NE Ohio 6A we get plenty of chill hours and i have plenty of cross pollination (also have pluots pluerrys and plums)

Good info! I put in 4 bare root trees this spring and 3 are doing really well. One of the apple trees started to put out new growth and the just stopped and the leaves started to get dry and curl. I don’t know if it will come back next spring but I guess you have to try and learn through the process. I can always put in a new one.🤷‍♀️

Hi Micki! Glad to hear you've got some trees in the ground! I had a similar issue with my ghost apple and realized I was underwatering it. I increased irrigation and (the parts that hadn't already died off) sprang back to life.

@@walkbyfaithfamily9177 20sF?!? We're still in the high 80's in SoCal! Let's see how it does over winter. Time will tell! It could be some other issue besides irrigation. For us, the heat tends to be what stresses these trees out.

The Busy Gardener- Yes! Tonight is supposed to be a low of 29F. And 1-3 inches of snow is possible on Tuesday. Trying to prep everything for winter. 🥶 I don’t know that there is anything else I can do for this tree at this point but will look for signs of life in the spring. 🤷‍♀️

Hi Cameron, Thanks for this series. Very informative. Where do you purchase your gro-power flower n bloom 3-12-12 ? I see only one outlet near me in Fresno, Ca. and they appear to be heavily geared towards the pro market.

Hey CG! I purchase the 3-12-12 at my local Ewing irrigation/landscape supply. They carry it in 50lb bags, which is the right size for me. I've seen smaller bags at other nurseries. It's a bit hit or miss, it seems.

I love both ya'lls videos lots of info. I have started my orchard this yes have some in-ground and others in pots, for now, the last count was 14 trees and 38 berry vines, but i started off by planting in really wet ground and when i realized it a few weeks late when the rains came, i dug the 4 trees that was there and moved them to higher ground. my plum and apple are doing great but my 2 peach are dropping all their leaves, i also have mole tunneling threw out my property, do you think i might have killed them by planting first in wrong spot or can i blame the moles

Lol! I feel you, Tammy. I'd like to be able to blame the moles, but it's possible you're getting leaf drop from the trees getting stressed during transplant. Don't take them out till you're sure they're actually dead!

Marsha Balderrama Hi Marsha! We use Gro Power’s “Flower N Bloom 3-12-12”, and supplement the younger trees with additional Nitrogen to get them initially established. I buy my 3-12-12 in 50lb bags at my local irrigation supply store

my neighbor sprinkler system waters every morning in summer and it ends up to much water for my asian 3-1 pear and the 3-1 sweet cherry thats on our border they died this yr there third yr. around 4 ft tall.

Nooo! One of the great reasons to plant trees above grade/ground, is it's a little harder to overwater them.

My oldest trees are only four years old; most are only two years old. But yours look much fuller and denser than mine. Is that okay? Should I expect them to become fuller and denser over time?

Hey Andrew! Lots of factors influence tree growth: climate, irrigation, feeding, sunlight, etc. Your trees are still really young. Where are you located? Do you fertilize your trees? Generally, if I'm not seeing anything specifically concerning (leaf drop, heat stress, etc), I don't take worry too much about the immediate health of the tree, but try to determine if there is something the tree needs from me.

Is jujube a stone fruit related to the other stone fruits?

Hi Harry! Jujube are NOT stone fruit (stone fruit make up the Prunus family). They are distinct.

Most fruit trees don't want to be overwatered and want to dry out a little, moving from "wet" to "moist" before being rewatered. Consider an inexpensive water meter like this for $9 amzn.to/3trdSW3
