In this video I'm joined by my very special guest, Tom Spellman of Dave Wilson Nursery. Some people plant trees and hope for the best, but find themselves with a tree that just isn't doing well. In this video, Tom highlights things that you should consider and plan BEFORE planting a fruit tree(s). Set yourself up for fruit tree success with a little bit of foresight!

Thanks for the Tom Spellman chat - he is so inspiring. I have seen a lot of his videos and he has convinced me to try out growing some trees and keeping them small. I also got the book Grow a little fruit tree. I'm still terrified I'm going to screw up but if I do, I guess I can always try again! Love this chat!

I liked the comment made about halfway through the video, "It's almost like a pet. You can't just plant it and forget about it. It requires care." That's true. So, think about that before getting more trees than you are able to care for, or the time to care for them properly.

I've purchased about 2 dozen Dave Wilson Nursery stone fruit trees in the last 3 years, and have had great success with them. I've purchased "big box" trees and cane berries in the past that haven't done so well. It's worth the extra couple of bucks to get health, quality and locally grown trees that will work well in the California and the West. Thanks Tom Spellman for your years of great advice, it has helped immeasurably in the success I've had with my DW trees.

Oh no , I just planted 14 different kind fruit trees in my front yard ,4-5 Varieties will bear same time. I had my list in hand before I went to nursery, but I was to exciting and picking the trees are not on my list , I went back home and planted , than I found I made mistakes. I should follow my list or watch you video before I go .i have back yard can working on the varieties, but the back yard doesn’t have enough sunshine due to two huge pine trees .

It's ok if lots of things are ready at the same time. Just means more fruit in a shorter period to enjoy! And you'll have some extra to share with neighbors without feeling too bad about the extra harvest.

I'd invest in a water bath canner, a couple dozen Mason jars and a good dehydrator, if you haven't already. Can the stuff and make fruit leather.

What soil you use for the beds were you plant your trees? I only have sandy loam around here can I use it? Do I need to add amendments?
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 3 жыл бұрын
Sandy Loam is PREFERRED soil! I didn't add ammendment to the soil itself. You start with a solid 4-8 inch layer of woodship mulch, then add fertilizer to the top of the soil which works its way down

Nice video. What paint in white color did you use your tree trunk from bottom side?
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 4 жыл бұрын
I use IV Organic tree whitewash. It protects the trees like paint, but doesn't contaminate the soil with dried paint chips season after season. You can find IV Organic whitewash here: amzn.to/3b3KOuk

I don't have personal experience grafting apple onto pear, but as I understand it apple and pear are different genus, which means they can't be grafted onto each other in most cases. Apple=malus, pear= Pyrus

I have well-draining clay loam and my house sits at the top of a small hill (5 foot rise across 5 houses). Does that mean I can plant any tree without having to consider drainage?
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 2 жыл бұрын
The drainage has to do with the specific conditions of the soil in the hole you're planting it. A safe bet is to plant above grade a few to several inches above grade, and mound additional soil up around it. This is the safest bet for allowing roots to not be waterlogged

What is a Rootstock? How do I know what kind I have?
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Esther, a rootstock is the type of root system the desired fruiting wood was grafted to. Each rootstock has different characteristics. Many times trees will include a tag indicating a rootstock. If you can't tell which kind you've got, it's not a huge deal. It's something that can give you an ideal planting situation, but is only one part of the equation. Thanks for watching!

I don't really understand the part about rootstocks. I get what they are referring to but how do you find out what rootstock a tree is from? Online nursery's never have that info listed.
@TheBusyGardener

It's much easier in person, and even then, it depends on the grower being good about including a tag. Another reason I love Dave Wilson nursery
