When I moved to a community where roosters are allowed my bossy female crower was so shocked when she heard the real roosters crow. I laughed so hard. She became silent and just watched and listened She became less bossy and let the rooster take the lead..but not over her.She hated being mounted and after raising her great-great-grand children she decided she was trough with all chickens...She only hangs out with cats,dogs and,humans nowadays and..she still crows when she pleases.

Hens who want to become leaders in a place full of hens and start crowing, sound soo bad. But someone has to be a leader... the one with strong character will be willing. Have you seen girls in school who want to be leaders of a group? They also want the popular, handsome, strong leaders in sports.

Please see my post here ,she has had a reproductive issue and switched to her right ovary all hens use only the left ,right ovary gives them rooster characteristics ,they will not lay and will look more like a rooster than a hen and yes they will mount the other hens ,but cannot reproduce with them they are still female . talk to you vet about a contraceptive implant ,it will put her into a neutral state This happens because she could have cyst on her left ovary or some kind of metabolic problem .

Mystery solved. Penelope is not insane. Just an Alpha Chook. She is a Frizzle Cross Black Chicken. Fluffs herself out like a weird looking Turkey, runs around the other three, head down, like a loon - then tries to mount the nearest chook. What is odd is that Penelope is the only chook who “ crouches “ when I come near, ready to be mounted herself. I just pick her up, cuddle her, apologise for being merely a female human ( & not a gorgeous hunky rooster) and chat about the weather. After about 5-10 mins we go about our business. I’ve raised them from 1 day chicks as a clutch of 7, the 3 bros went back to the farm. One likes to ride on farm vehicles, on bonnet, looking INTO cab, wind up his…feathers…..at 30kmph. Chickens are a species apart. The other two ride the Clydesdale horse…..
@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama 2 жыл бұрын
Oh how hilarious! Ah yes nothing like a fresh breeze up the - - - oh nevermind. 🤣 Penelope might also be insane but she’s attempting to show her status as alpha. Bowing to you means she acknowledges you as her roo (and she’s getting ready to lay eggs!). And yes I remind my girlies that I am a funny looking featherless rooster, but I am also the Bringer of Treats so they don’t mind! ✌🏼❤️🐓

He's only just starting to establish the order with my hens who don't care it seems. He's attacked me a couple of times but it's already started to reduce... I love him and don't want to give him up.

Hi! I would definitely try to make an alliance with neighbors. Depending on where you live, you can pay a fine or even have your chickens taken away if you’re in violation of city law, HOA, etc. There are rooster collars and other things but while I haven’t looked into it much, it seems a bit cruel to me. So for now I’d talk to the neighbors (free eggs, anyone?) and make sure I know my rights. ✌🏻❤️🐓

Will the Roo put the want to be hen in her place when introduced? She can get a little mean with two of my girls and when I see it I display my dominance. These two particular hens will run to me and stay around my feet even climbing on my shoes when Trouble does her dominance thing. My two will not stand up to her and hunch on ground making an odd please don't hurt me yelp.

Thanks for this video! I'm so glad these things can be caused by a not-so-dramatically aggravated chicken condition! I was horrified today to see my older "mom" mount another girl...and of course, I began to frantically search for an explanation. Found a really weird scientific article that says that one in 10,000 hens may actually have a genetic disorder that causes one of the ovaries to become inactive and then start producing male hormones when the only active ovary fails or becomes damaged. ... such a hen can actually turn into a kind of rooster, even in appearance - the plumage will change to that of a rooster, but of course such a quasi-rooster will not be fertile. So I really panicked today! 🤣 Thank you for dispelling my fears!!!

Millie, a 2yo Blue Star pullet. stopped laying after one year of great egg production. She recently began crowing loudly in the early morning, sounding like a rooster! Her comb and waddle are larger than her sister, Myrtle's. Same hatch date, first eggs on same day, Myrtle is dominant over Millie and a bully to the other hens, and is a great egg layer. I removed Millie from the flock to see if it will break her new crowing habit. Found info about when the left ovary, estrogen producer, is damaged and no further eggs are made, the right ovary, which makes testosterone, takes over. Dominance, bullying are now evident with Mille. Blue Stars are known to be more reactive and hyper chickens. I had to give them a separate coop and run withing the main pen due to pecking damage/bullying behaviors. Keeping a small flock of hens used to be a joy until the Blue Stars. Beautiful and healthy, but, nothing but trouble.

I have a pair of gay roosters . They were born together. Had 12 hatch and 6 died ( probably all baby hens ) . These 2 roosters grew up with the only hen being the wife of an older rooster who wouldn’t let them mount his wife . So they take turns mounting each other . We’ve since had 3 hens that came of age and they don’t try very hard to mount those 3 hens . It’s funny . They’re all our pet chickens. Not for food . Today, I had a 6-8 week old chick that we’ve always presumed to be a hen come into the house for awhile. She / he started crowing ! It’s the cutest little crow ever. Her name is Sunshine. She only crowed while in the house. We are still trying to guess whether or not she’s a rooster or a hen . She’s feathered like a hen . Her comb is still forming ( barely there ) . She’s part bantam and part serama . Or he . Anyone had a young hen crow like that ? We are trying to tame them . There are 7 in her pen . But the others are different breeds of hens and they’re slightly bigger than her even though they’re younger . We bring them inside at night and cuddle with them . Sunshine is my favorite one and she nests in my hair . I put her in a fluffy beanie hat to catch poop if she decides to poop 🤣

I used to have an older hen that would crow every once in a while, but she had passed away from old age and even though she was dead one of my Orpington hens was mounting her, I don’t know if it was just a clarification that she was dead, or if it was the rooster side of the hen coming out 😆

We have a young rooster who at this current moment hasn't started crowing yet. We are currently sporting a dominant hen so when I heard crowing this afternoon I got all excited thinking that my rooster is starting to establish himself. Here I'm praising my roo for finally coming into his own and the next thing I know the hen decided to crow out of the blue. 🤦‍♀️😅 What are the chances that my soft Roo will never crow as long as that dominant hen is around? Also I believe that the crowing was triggered by another much younger hen that has started laying and seems to be very persistent on laying in the same area as the dominant hen. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hey! I do think that the roo will crow when he’s ready (and there’s a good chance that the hen will stop when he does). There’s also a difference between a crow and an egg song - I have a video here if you want to search for it. The egg song is done by most hens right before or after laying an egg. It’s basically them bragging “Hey look at me and look at how awesome I am!” 😆email me if you’d like more help! theMama@realsimplemama.com ✌🏼❤️🐓

Re my previous comment... I know they are supposed to be sex links, identifiable at birth but I may not have received true ISA Browns that haven't been bred otherwise. 3 of them developed very red and large combs and waddles early on.

We got 3 hens a few months ago, we didn't wanted a rooster for the same reason (too noisy) after a few weeks one of the hens started to crow, days went by and we noticed she was changing her appearance, not the long feathers but her face (wattle & comb) so she looks more like a rooster, is this normal as well?
@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama 2 жыл бұрын
If they’re actually changing in appearance, chances are it is a rooster. Different breeds will mature and become more obvious at different ages, but you are right to observe that usually a rooster has a bigger and brighter comb. If you know your breeds, you can always Google images of that breed rooster, like “Wyandotte rooster“, and compare things like the shape of the comb and saddle feathers. You can always send photos to me and I will help you too! theMama@realsimplemama.com

if she is no longer laying eggs she has switched over to her right ovary,all laying hens use the left ovary only They switch over due a cyst of metabolic disorder ,unfortunately hens are a strange mix the right ovary produces rooster characteristic including comb wattles and tail feathers ,they are still female and can’t reproduce ,they will still chase the hens around and mount them though 😂 They say one in ten thousand ,but considering how many back yard flocks there their are ,not as rare as one might assume . Usually older hens will undergo this weird change ,if any of mine show such symptoms they are getting a contraceptive implant . Actually do this for my old girls as they live longer and are still wise flock members which the younger ones learn home .

I had 2 brahmas supposedly female at age1 week old along with an eater egger, supposedly female. At age 4 months old , I realize FOR SURE my Easter egger was a rooster. In the mean time I got 3 more supposedly hens that turned out to be roosters. My easter egger known roo was having competition with my brahma hen, trying to crow, Sounds God awful and finally getting dominance over the hen. Got rid of all roosters but kept the brahma hen that I thought might be a roo after all. Now that everyone is gone but the 2 brahmas. The one that used to compete in crowi NG, never has crowed since ,however I did see them trying to mate 1 time only. Both are sweet non violent like the true roos. Question is , do I have 2 hens and beither have started laying eggs at 20 weeks old. Planning purchasing 3 more hens in September same age as to mine

I have two awful hens that crow like roosters and try to rape my smaller hen. I have them in jail, unfortunately together, now because they are going to kill my smaller hen. My pullet crows at 0630 and 0930 like clockwork. My older neighbour is arrogant and insists this isn't possible, as he was raised on a farm in Iowa. I have to spend $200 to get my crowing hen sexed so the city of Aurora, CO doesn't order her euthanized. And I still face the possibility if my neighbour complains again just because she is now considered a nuisance. All part of the plan to ensure every neighbourhood is like one big submissive retirement community so no one is self-sufficient.

Been watching for years now. I have a hen which is a dominate female that has spurs that are very sharp. She goes from feed area to feed area pecking the other hens. She's a real bitch to the other hens in the group. No crowing though. Haven't been able to catch her laying an egg either. Pretty weird.

Wow! She has spurs?!!!? That’s insane! Almost like a gender less chicken then with some qualities of each. I really want you to catch it laying an egg! But I’m glad it has a safe home with you either way. ❤️ Though I hope it chills out with the pecking! What a jerk!

@@realsimplemama she's a type of Wyandotte. Dk.gray with lace. She's definitely unique. I took in 6 hens from friends who needed someone to take care of them. Oh my gosh ewwww I’m sorry. Those are so nasty. I’d keep the food locked up the best you can, do multiple layers of hardware cloth and bird netting if possible. Also use a crapload of mint and lemon (essential oils, plants, etc.) to help repel them.

Hmmm I’d have to look up the bucket trap. Could you get an outdoor rescue cat? Or if you have a dog, let them in there at night (when the chickens are locked up) to at least pee by there? I would hope that the smell would help deter them. I’m sorry I know it’s a nasty mess
