I also own a 1994 XJ. XJ's all have heating issues. But long time Cherokee wheelers have solved this issue. There is a simple cheap fix. Start by Changing your temp cluster, i know it seems not likely but your gauge could just be reading wrong. If that doesn't work its your fan clutch. The stock XJ fan clutch is small and weak. Run your OEM radiator with a stock OEM ZJ Cherokee fan clutch. The ZJ clutch is more robust and solid. It will allow your fan to spin at higher rpm. I live in Las Vegas where it gets to be 115 in the summer on a daily basis. I run this same set up in my XJ with the A/C on full blast while Im on the trail or rock crawling. Its trail proven and rock solid. Try it! It works! Good luck.

Ronnie, I’m a slave to the coolant temp gauge in my 1991 XJ. The persistent cooling issue has been a real struggle. After I purchased it, I attempted to drive it home (4 hour drive), but it seemed the fans stopped working and hit a stand-still in traffic. It touched into the red as I pulled over and turned it off and popped the hood. Radiator had cracked and was dripping coolant. It has since, undergone two head gasket and head checks (both negative at two different shops), three flushes, 190 thermostat, all new hoses, Mishimoto radiator, Mishimoto triple electric fans, and a FlowCooler high flow water pump. Then lastly, hood vents. After burping the system from some trapped air (poor shop), it seemed like it was running really cool finally! Like 175-190…then it came back. It quickly warms to 210, then it rises to 225/230 and hangs out there… I’m really tired of chasing gremlins. Any thoughts or opinions? I’m desperate.

There is a reason for the overheating... Triple fan set will not fix the problem. Only good for crawling. The OEM steup is sufficient if ALL cooling components are in top condition. My XJ runs at normal temps only moving higher in heavy traffic ( normal) I then switch on my manual override on the electric fan and down comes the temp. I have a h/d clutch fan with standard electric fan for the A/C. New hoses/water pump and thermo

Something that people often overlook is the temperature gauge. If it's not reading correctly you'll obviously get bad temp readings. Before you go throwing parts I suggest using a infrared thermometer, or a thermal imager. Check your radiator temp, hose temp, and engine temp. That's how I found out my temperature gauge was not reading properly. Hope this helps.

Love your channel Cherokee Ronnie. In my opinion hood vents look better closer to the windshield, but that is aerodynamically the worst place for them when the vehicle is moving. As the Jeep is being driven on the highway the air pressure is the highest near the windshield and is the reason why the fresh air vents are placed there by design. It helps push the outside air INTO the HVAC system because the pressure is higher than atmospheric pressure. When the Jeep is moving slow (i.e. sitting in traffic or crawling along a trail) ANY location is suitable for extracting hot air from the engine bay. HOWEVER, the absolute BEST location to install hood vents is near the FRONT of the hood where the air pressure is lower than atmospheric pressure and will draw out hot air from the engine bay. This location will draw out the hot air directly from behind the radiator allowing it to escape before it has the chance to flow across the engine and unnecessarily heating up everything under the hood. Keep up the good videos.

Finally got my 206k XJ running below 210 more often than not, and just in time for summer in Miami. ZJ fan clutch, Champion Alum rad, Flowkooler waterpump, mopar 195 Tstat, Transcooler radiator bipass (this cut my stoplight rising engine temps SIGNIFICANTLY, almost as much as the new high flow water pump), and a high flow oil pump (original was giving out and oil pressure was low, keep in mind oil cools the engine as well!) My Jeep is black and in all this sun it sure as hell heats up quick, want to eventually get some hood vents on it.

I ran an X-Bull 13k winch on my 99 Wrangler for 3+ years. Used daily pulling anything and everything. Mostly stuff in the sand. Motorhomes, trucks, cars, manlifts on lots, really abused it. Only thing that died was the wireless function. Easy fix. For $300, buy far the best deal. I love the receiver mounted idea. My Grand Cherokee has that. Used it on my Ram until I got a permanent bed mount system. Currently using a receiver for my Cherokee (rear), but have a winch bumper coming. One thing I like about the rear mount is pulling people out of a hole, then being able to keep pulling without turning around, or backing in crowded areas. Always use wireless. You can crawl underneath and watch bumpers and shields while operating the winch remotely. So many people just hooking and booking. Leaving a mess behind.

Thanks Ronnie! Old, wizened Grearhead here but, owned a 2000 cherokee for 10 months. Since this cherokee has the warp, crack prone head design, and has once been replaced, I was quite concerned about the 4.0 propensity for higher operating temps. I plan an immediate fan clutch upgrade, trans cooler, and thorough system flush. Did the water pump 3 months ago. I also installed a new radiator and electric fan, when the power steering pump seized and the cheap pos plastic pulley exploded and destroyed aforementioned fan and radiator! Don't forget a good thermostat. Thanks, CR!

I had an overheating issue with my new to me 1997 Wrangler TJ Sport. It had sat several years. Previous owner had passed away. Only had water in system. The heater coil was full of rust. The radiator was partially plugged. I completely flushed the system, replaced the radiator, installed a 160 degree thermostat, water pump for a total of $225 and a few hours labor. Fan clutch is ok. It hasn't run hot since.

My '89 XJ was always overheating when I first bought it a year ago. You need to run a shroud on your engine fan and I would recommend replacing the clutch fan if any oil residue is present. I picked up a good shroud and a U-Pullit for $5, made a ton of difference. Then used an additive flush with distilled water and let it it work and loosen any rust and debris. Flushed the whole system a few times then back flushed the heater core and the radiator. TONS of rust came out. Replaced the thermostat and filled with 50/50 antifreeze. Held a perfect temp for everyday driving! On the trails is would slowly creep up past the middle line, but nothing extreme. Added a set of hood vents and no issues. Perfect temp even during winter.
@jeep146
@jeep146 6 жыл бұрын
I have seen many jeep videos for some reason they have removed the shroud. The guys that engineered the jeep put it on for a reason. When you sit in heavy traffic you need to pull that air thru the fins. Without it the air is going all over. A new radiator is about $100.00 made a big difference.

Good info to know about Jeep Inline 6 4.0 engines my old 1993 Jeep Cherokee always like run little on warm side idling it took while but did I did finally get it to stay fairly cooler after replacing the fan clutch and flushing the radiator. My new 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee stays right on the money right at 210 but yes these engines like to run warm it don't take very long for my inline 6 to warm right up even in the super cold winter which is kind of nice. Wish my 5.9 cummins would warm up that fast in the winter lol.

the motor that is in the jeep is not hot running design the problem is the space is the front of the jeep built with the possibility of four wheel dive the amount of moving air is limited some of the best solutions are not popular to make horse power means making more heat removing the clutch fan and installing a electric fan this reduces that horse robbing clutch fan add an external transmission cooler this is another source of heat the cooling system has to deal with and also keep the cooling system clean with coolant straight water is not a great coolant over the long run thank you

My jeep keeps overheating when I’m in traffic or crawling through the woods than once I turn it off it gets so hot it won’t start and if it does start it runs like shit, I’ve changed the water pump, thermostat, radiator, and flushed the system and it continues to do it, and my electric fan works and my other fan works as well I thought it may be the fan clutch but the videos I’ve watched everything seems to be working as it should, any ideas as to why it is still getting the hot?

@@MrTwitch37 no. I put in a lower temp regulator. The only thing that changed was I didn't have much heat in the winter. I have sense changed it back to a 195 and have heat again.

Overheats because you worked on something requiring coolant drain and refilled. This lets air pocket form again. Every time you will need to find temperature sensor at back of cylinder head and with coolant cold unscrew sensor to let air out. Drivers side. Tilt nose down hill. May have to do it a couple of times. Then stops over heating. Also heat soak at idle. But coolant stops flowing if air pocket in the 4.0.

Hi. I've been wanting to get an XJ since I graduated high school (specifically a '98 or '99). The thing is that when I do eventually buy one, I want to be able to repair it myself and work on it. I have no idea or experience with maintaining cars so I was wondering whether anyone has any great tips or advice for me. (sources will help too!). I just like watching your videos during my study breaks bc I find jeeps to be really fascinating.

Cesar Cortez I got a '99 XJ out of high school for about 4,000 dollars. The engine overheated and i blew the head gasket. I ended up getting the transmission rebuilt and replacing the engine with another 4.0L. Watch for rust and I would suggest a new radiator off the bat. Also they're not the best at tight maneuvers but it's a tank at off-roading.

Cesar I'm in a similar situation with just getting a 93 xj and no experience. I'm beginning to fix/replace parts and this could go on for months it looks like. I've found with tinkering on guns, motorcycles and now this jeep that just reading forums and watching youtube videos can teach you almost any damn thing. Good luck and don't be intimidated.

i got a 93 grand cherokee the other day i was sitting parked with ac on, hot day, all the sudden coolant is pouring out into a huge puddle from the bottom of the passanger side by my radiator area, couldnt quite see where it came from cause i wasnt gonna lay in a puddle of coolant but it looked like it was just behind my bumper. so i refilled with distilled water some bubbling after refill in expansion tank but nothing since and havent had a drop leak out since. anybody ever hear of that? i know i was low on coolant it was old coolant and could be a bad cap but thats it.
