This just happened to me today. Ugh. I was dumbfounded until I pulled this video. My oil filter is in a hard spot to see let alone maneuver while on your back looking up. I had to run out and get some degreasing cleaner and Johnny Cat Litter to clean my parking stall. I cleaned up the mess before anyone saw what a buffoon I looked like. LOL! 4 quarts of oil just poured out as soon as I started the engine. I removed the oil filter I had installed and sure enough, the old gasket was wedged in there. I bought a new filter and more oil and did the job again. Everything runs smoothly now. I have done many an oil change but this incident was a first. I wish I saw your video prior to the day's events. Live & learn. Thank you, Sir. I am subscribed!

This just happened to me today. I, however, did not see the old gasket still on so I had oil gushing out and made a huge mess. I was dumbfounded what could have happened but when I looked at my filter I saw the old gasket sticking out. So I removed my filter and the old gasket and replaced the filter and all was good. Topping off the oil was interesting since I had to dump some and check the dipstick several times. But hopefully no damage was done in the few seconds the car was running.

This just happened to me! Literally the second you showed the old seal I remember looking at the old filter and noticing it was missing but I was in a rush and didn’t think anything of it.

I saw an alarming puddle of oil underneath my usual parking spot and freaked out! Checked the oil filter and it was loose. Hand tighten, and presto! Checked it 6 hours later, no leaks.

What if there is no gasket at all. Would this cause problems with the transmission because I am slipping all of a sudden after an oil change.

This has nothing to do with the transmission. Yes the oil filter should have a gasket.

This just happened to me but I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee n the oil filter is on the top front of the motor not sure how to reach down in there n get the old gasket off??

You might have to find another way to access it..possibly from the bottom up?

That just happened to me. The oiI pressure sensor went off and there's a pool of oil under my truck. When I checked, there was no rubber ring on the filter. I paid someone to change the oil because it needed to be done, and I had put in an eleven hour day. To add insult to injury, it was a mechanic that did the oil change. I doubt that he put oil on the filter ring. Thanks for the info.

Many of these "mechanics" are noobs to the industry. My dad use to tell his garage put an experienced mechanic on it, not the noob. You pay top wages and you expect top service quality in return, right?

After a recent oil change by the dealership suddenly entire oil started to come out and drained (they did double gasket!) I had no idea what kind of fluid it was and turned on the car running for about 10 minutes. Do you think running a car with zero oil would damage the engine if it runs even 10 minutes? Since it was the dealership’s fault do I need to ask for warranty in case something happens to the engine? If yes how long warranty should I ask? if the damage has already done should I ask for compensation? How much? I am a single mom and really worried.

I would call the dealership and tell them what is happening and see what they recommend, but yes, running any type of engine without oil can damage the motor.

mine has a small drip... i think i over tightened it. i used sandpaper to get a real good grip on it and hand-tightened that down. definitely gunna be a pain in the ass to take off later...

Typically hand tight and 1/4 turn is perfect. You do not watch to over tighten oil filters. Thanks for watching.

It the oil filter is leaking between the housing and the filter it may not be snug enough or possibly a bad filter?

Depending on the engine, this can actually turn out to be a very expensive mistake. I had an Explorer in the 90s with the sohc 4.0 that spat out the entire crank case in less than 10 seconds when I double gasket'd an FL-1A filter. I then did the exact same thing months later on a 90s Plymouth Voyager (3.0l) that emptied the crankcase even quicker but this time the motor never fully recovered from the blunder.

Your oil filter might be also leaking cuz 3 times now, Ive had those instant oil change places change my oil...later only to find I have low oil noticed, yep, the filter loose as a goose. Why should it get loose unless there's some kind of scam going on by these outlets? I dont know, but check the filter area for oil if you all of a sudden have low oil levels showing up. Sigh.

That is a very odd thing to have happen. Oil filters don't just loosen up on their own. I have never seen this happen.
