Pritiam Singh suggested that the public is entitled to question whether NTUC’s close relationship with the People’s Action Party (PAP) presents a conflict of interest.
@MichaelLim09076 күн бұрын
It is the role of the opposition to show that there is a conflict of interest ( which I really doubt because unions are the biggest voting block) citing clear examples . Anything less is pure speculation and inciting negative reactions towards NTUC which is irresponsible and unprofessional

@@martinarchie2902 the public is entitled to question any policy . But don't you think since opposition have been voted into Parliament and hence have parliamentary privileges they should do their homework and pose the proof of actual incidents of conflict and ask PAP to answer for it. Why push the issue back to the voters?? Because WP could not find incidents of conflict . Really ??? then why raise it and distract the debate on an important policy that direct affects platform workers

The Flawed Logic that Independence is bad: 1. Is the Judiciary Independent? Should it be Independent? Of course everyone would say it should be right? So Independent Union is only the right thing to have and it is Undebunkably correct. 2. Why so Defensive when WP want an Independent Union? Is the low EQ defensiveness suggesting it is not independent or it must Not be Independent to be good?

We are entitled to think what we want ( because you cannot kill an idea) but does not mean our thoughts when put into action will benefit the country. You have to look at the results achieved and weigh it against the harm caused by this relationship and see which is more beneficial for Singapore as a country and society. History has proven that the country has benefitted from this relationship much more than opposition wants to admit

Gerald Giam clarified that when he used the terms “tether” or “untether,” he meant that the NTUC and the PAP should be separate and independent organizations.
@MichaelLim09076 күн бұрын
PAP and NTUC are 2 different organisations that functions with the sole objectives of bringing economic progress , social cohesion and improvements to the lives of those living and working in Singapore. PAP and NTUC knows that unless they give the people of Singapore hope in their future they cannot continue to exist . This existential threat is what binds them together and strengthens this "close relationship" which will continue regardless of what the opposition wants the people to think .

Gave history of pre independence unionism during colonial era but didn’t even know more recent post independence history that late Mr. OTC was once NTUC sec gen. This is laughable. What’s even more laughable is that OTC was SG NTUC for slightly more than a decade, not short stint to be forgotten by one championing a cause! I bet he doesn’t even know why OTC was sent by LKY to NTUC? Moreover OTC didn’t speak up against govt as union chief but when he was our first EP. I wonder if he knows the reasons for speaking up, NOT against the govt but FOR the ppl of SGP n FOR SGP? Let’s get this clear. When someone, whether opposition or commoner, speaks up for SGP & Sgpreans, it’s not tantamount to speaking out against govt. The govt is promoting n encouraging “active citizenry”, getting engaged in nation building for a better SGP, TOGETHER? Active citizenry”, I hope, doesn’t mean only supporting current policies, be YES MAN (in the words of Mr. Philip Yeo, eunuch), not or dare not speak up, whether he’s right or wrong, so long he’s talking about policies n systems n not attacking integrity of or criticizing anyone personally. That’s constructive “active citizenry”. I hope it’s not viewed as destructive citizenry? Not speaking up or dare not speak up is in itself “destructive passive citizenry “! Also to correct one of the panelist. SIA pilots didn’t go on “strike”! They went on a “work to rule”! Know the technical, in fact legal, difference btw the 2. I m not WP supporter. But let’s give some attention in this case. Since history n birth of unionism during colonial era has been cited, let’s try to understand the context of necessity of symbiotic relationships. During that era, the British lorded over us. It was masters-slaves relationships! There was no local govt headed by locals. The local workers were unrepresented n unprotected. I believe this was the reason for the birth of WP started by late Mr. David Marshall to galvanize n represent local “slaves” vs the colonial “masters”! The relationship then was confrontational, not symbiotic or synergistic! Today, SGP politics n unionism have evolved. It’s no more masters-slaves relationship but elected reps n electorates partnership. To quote ex PM LHL, now SM, it’s servant-master, hence the other side of fence must be master-servant, but definitely not master-slaves! Plus with our long history of tripartism n symbiotism, no govt or union will want to dismantle this “unique” only one in the world relationship. So qn to ask n litmus test for NTUC as well as SGP is whether NTUC n SGP can still survive n succeed independently without a minister at its helm n many MPs in its ranks? To say SGP n NTUC cannot is to insult all NTUC non PAP affiliated officials n members. Proponents see the symbiotic relationships as “alliance”. Opponents see as “controls”! So lets rally call Majullah Singapura. This rally or clarion call is exclusively reserved for the nation SGP only. Let’s not give it a twist n start rallying call Majullah NTUC or in no time it’ll breathe new life into Majullah NTWU, Majullah FDAWU, Majullah SPWU…. or one day we’ll all Majullah in different directions 😂!

Firstly it is certainly out of order for the opposition to raise this issue of PAP linkage to NTUC by hijacking the debate on protecting platform workers. I think it is unprofessional and opportunistic . On this basis the WP had done themselves a great disservice as the optics certainly show that WP as a workers' party has thrown workers under the bus to further advance their own political agenda

The Constitution of Singapore empowers voters to change the gov without use of force. It is the Supreme Law of Singapore. Are you against democracy? If soz you need to ask your gov to abolish this right and abolish elections
