I retired at the end of December and made sure ALL paper work was filled out properly and got a full pension check 2 months later.

It continues to amaze me how so many federal employees don’t understand their pay and retirement systems.

Retired April 1. Received two interm payments and just received letter saying my retirement was finalized. Had to call them to change my address. Very easy to work with.

Wait until 2028 when many CBP officers are eligible to retire.

One way to speed it up is complain to your local congressman. Let them send a letter to your agency on your behalf. The agency has limited time to respond to a member of congress.

OPM is actually doing allot better these days. Your retirement application goes through your agency before being sent to OPM to check for mistakes, a rep will contact you to fix anything. Most will have access to their TSP and get their AL payout and last checks within 3 weeks of retirement and get their interim check within 8-10 weeks, and have the whole thing wrapped up in 16. Laughable that some think they cannot survive in the interim; if you had a 25 plus year FED career money should not be an issue.

If the government would run like a actual business, a lot of these issues would disappear

I scheduled my retirement date from DOD the last day of Dec a couple years ago. I Triple checked all the forms to ensure everything was accurate and mailed the retirement package during Sep. I seemlessly retired and received a couple interim checks during Jan/Feb and full retirement plus what was owed from the interim checks on Mar 1. Been on auto-pilot every since. Submit early and ensure paperwork is correct.

I had the smoothest experience with OPM upon retiring at the end of April, 2022.

Good to know Dallen. Thanks again, so timely & thorough. The more lead time you give to HR & you read docs closely, less chance of delays or errors😊

I don't recall needing a receipt on the application for buying back military but my annuity estimate did have my military status as FUNDED.

At least as a retiree you get an interim payment. As a survivor all payments stop. They told me it would be 6-10 weeks to get the paperwork. Fortunately that came in 3.5 weeks and I filled it out and mailed it the day it arrived. But when I called OPM at the beginning of March, I was told they were processing applications received on October 1st. So it is unlikely that I will see any pension money until September or October. You better make sure that emergency fund is well funded if you have survivor benefits when your survivor is grieving and hit with the addition bills of funeral expenses.
