Why is Persona 4 SO POPULAR?

There are SO MANY persona games in the series, but Persona 4 remains one of, if not THE most popular Persona games ever made. But why is Persona 4 SO POPULAR?

I think Persona 4 somehow creates a silly atmosphere despite being a really dark story with a cast of characters that work so well with each other that you can listen to their interactions for hours without ever getting bored. I felt like the other games in the series were friends of circumstance while in Persona 4, these guys will be friends for life.

Persona 4 is just a more special experience for me(?) I guess. The characters were way more relatable then in P5 and some actually inspired me to be a better person. Kanji is my favorite character in the entire series, and the culprit is such a good villain, i love when the Protag and Antagonist have a relationship where they are the same but different. It just felt so different than P5, it’s probably my favorite game ever honestly. Not saying there’s things I wouldn’t change if I could, having fanservice supreme for February was something I wish absolutely didn’t exist.

I think the best reason is the theme about finding your true self and accepting your shadow. Every Persona game (at least since 3) has the team accepting their shadows in some way or another but P4 makes it the focus of the story for the most part. I'm sure most can relate to Kanji and the feeling of being mistreated only because your likes didn't accommodate to your gender. Also to note that the shadows are not "defeated" by brute force, but by the owner of that shadow accepting it and going on, trying to become the best part of themselves.

It is the growth of the characters. You have this Breakfast club style of characters who come together by chance and they battle their insecurities as well as open up to each other throughout the game. There are points where you feel really uncomfortable and the game covers a wide range of relatable themes not usually done in videogames. Also in such a cool way which is relevant to the story. It is so rewarding and really immersive how the game emotionally grips the player.

Not only an interesting history, but also an easy to understand lore compared to 5 and 3, a cast that actually feel like a group of friends, a protagonist which has a perfect balance between serious and comedic, the one that introduced third tier personas, a plot twist that before 5 was pretty hard to expect, and better social links. I may be off base, but honestly I think it has more to do with accessibility. 4 has multiple anime, movies, was on Steam first, is older than 5, better manga and is in all spin offs, PLUS it's Dancing game came first. I think 3, at least Portable, is strictly better than 4 in almost every way, and I mean that literally besides a very small number of quality of life I don't think 4 is even close to 3, it's just so much easier to get a hold of.

From someone who lives in Europe, way off base. We only got P4G on the PS Vita which was a very unpopular and undersold console. So unles syou knew about it, you likely missed this amazing JRPG.

@@petenewby9882 Let's get this out of the way first. Physically P4 sold about 683K while P3 sold 689K, HOWEVER P4 also sold over 1M units over steam, which means it almost sold 1M more than P3. And this is all versions put together. (Source is a cite called Persona Central which has an article on physical sales for all game by 2020 and another article on P4 Steam sales from 2021) But that shows how much the Steam sales and overall exposure helped P4, which P3 didn't get.

Ngl, while my personal favorite might be P3 in terms of the battle system, P4 is my favorite in literally every other category. The game got a bunch of absolutely amazing improvements coming from p3 that I have been absolutely spoiled on and cannot live without now such as the ability to choose what skills your persona can learn in Fusion, the art style has a sort of timelessness to it that I really feels fits the Persona side of Shin Megami tensei perfectly, ironically much more than I feel Persona 5 does. But most importantly I feel the game's message about reaching out to the truth, per say, is exemplified in the multiple endings you can choose and the fact that you can completely miss the true ending of the game if you don't constantly aim to find the truth about the case. Persona 4 is my personal favorite to replay to experience the story and honestly I would rather replay it over Persona 5.

Oh for sure- I feel like the p5 cast could have gotten along; I will honestly never understand why they didn't make them get along more. It would've been at least 30% better if they treated Ryuji like he was human imo- even Junpei got treated better than him. It is an odd mix of characters, but so was the p4 cast, and they got along wonderfully. The p5 cast was a missed opportunity.

My friend and I discussed this. And the basic conclusion was that the P4 group seemed like good enough friends that they would still become friends even without the Persona stuff going on. I mean, maybe not the underclassmen, and Naoto wouldnt even be there if not for the murders, but its totally believeable that Yu, Yosuke, Chie, and Yukiko would form a tight knit friend group even without the craziness. On the other hand, most of the P5 group dont seem like theyd get along under normal circumstances, at least compared to the P4 group.

Persona 4’s characters to me are the most well written in the series. The way they interact with each other and with the MC is really fun and makes them feel like a real group of friends which is something SEES and the PT lacked. (Obviously P1-P2 don’t have a focus on the social aspect but if they did I wouldn’t be surprised if P2IS was a contender for this title). When I finished P4 for the first time i had never felt that sad finishing a video game ever because I felt like I was leaving actual friends behind, whereas with every other game they just feel like characters with no connection to you the player behind the screen

So basically in other words... nostalgia. I discovered the Persona series last year, played P5 and loved it. Wanted more and then played P4. I was expecting some kind of masterpiece by how praised this game is, esp when it comes to characters and story. And I really liked it, but it was definitely weaker than P5 in every way. The dungeons, the characters, the story, the villain/antagonist, the music (even though the music is still awesome in P4) just everything P4 did, P5 did better. Probably not true. The reason P4 is so popular is probably because it was the first persona game (and the only for awhile) to be on platforms other than PlayStation and especially because it was the first to be on Steam.

I think 4 is most popular, because it’s got great social links and for the most part, the story doesn’t have a bad part. 3’s social links are the weakest, due to it being the first to do so and 5 has some story issues, especially Morgana bitching off for no real reason and makes it seem like Ryuji is mean to him, despite Morgana is more rude to Ryuji and the fact Joker can’t do crap that part of the game without the bitch, so it really leaves you upset. I think 4 has the best mechanics all around and definitely set the standard for ten game. But all three are great and I’m glad 3 is being remade, because it needs it.

The story is not only good, but paced well with several plot twists. Certin decisions have urgancy and consequences, often leading to different outcomes for the story. The characters are likeable, and the small town setting is unique not only in the SMT/Persona franchise but in Japanese gaming as a whole. Speaking of the setting, Inaba feels like a living, breathing place, to the point where the town itself feels like a character in the story and not just a backdrop.

P4 Golden (refering specifically to that version) is popular because, to put it simple, appeals to the feelings of players. Topics like: confronting your own demons, self acceptance, friendship and having a light-hearted and charismatic cast will push the buttons of anyone since it feels so humane. Now golden well... a shitload of fanservice and anime tropes that don't add anything relevant to a plot who was good the way it was. Marie's the worst offender. Adachi's SL and selective Inheritance are perhaps the most meaningful additions. I must be one of the few ones who will choose to play vanilla game.

I personally much prefer 5 over 4 mainly because I don't really relate to many of the characters in 4, and the playing the dungeons in 4 are absolutely miserable for me. I always take months of break from 4 whenever I have to do a dungeon and the social aspect is what gets me hooked, whereas I like the social aspect (albeit not QUITE as much as in 4) and dungeons both a lot in P5. Granted, this is making this argument having not finished either game yet, but about 90 hours into each.

P4 is without a doubt the most charming game i have ever played by such a wide margin. So many chacters that I love and even the ones that i pretend to hate i secretly still love them. I'd legit play persona 4 if the rpg combat and tv exploration wasn't there at all, whereas i couldn't say the same about persona 5 even though i love that game too. Basically i came to the game for the story and gameplay, i stayed because i couldn't stop loving the cast of characters.

I guess I'm the opposite of everyone else then. P5 changed my life and motivated me. P4 to me was eh compared to it but isn't bad I love the characters in P5 not in P4. The only character I like from P4 is Yukiko so far

Tbf the twist in Persona 4 is the main villain reveal while in Persona 5, it's a subversion of the new persona twist villain cliché that Atlus loves to use (Ikutsuki and Adachi). Instead of the twist being the villain, it's the main characters managing to outsmart the villain's schemes and making you the player think that you failed. That's the twist. And that's why imo it's the best twist in the current persona game.

Atlus themselves was not expecting Persona to be as popular as it was it’s crazy how a spin off surpassed the main games I love persona the first time I played these game I was surprised to find a game about a group of teenagers was surprisingly mature the characters had real issues and trials that they had to face and overcome. So many themes especially in p4 about embracing who you’re really resonated with me very few games do this. And on top of that it’s just an awesome Jrpg in general it hits all the boxes amazing story great characters good battle system music these games have it all As for persona 6 that will definitely be on all platforms can’t wait to see what they do with that one

P4 arguably has the most memorable cast. With the exception of Narukami (and Yosuke, to an extent), everyone in the IT is designed in a striking way that is more memorable and anime than the other mainline games (unless you want to dig into Masao Inaba or Akihiko or something). They all very strongly follow a main colour, and it makes them more notable than other Persona characters who have strong elements of their colour but it isn't the prevalent design choice (Mitsuru's red hair or Ann since she's only Panther in the Metaverse). Yukiko is always red Yukiko, and even in the scenarios where she isn't wearing red, she's wearing pink (or in a towel). In addition to the strong colour design, another reason P4 has such memorable characters is how it feels much more character oriented than P3 and P5 (I can't speak for 1 and 2). The team constantly interacts with each other since, aside from Chie, everyone else in the IT is just a loner when not with the IT. Beyond that, the characters all feel like the main focus of the game, rather than finding the killer. I'm always going to remember "Welcome home, big bro!" over "Where've you been?" Lastly, P4 dungeons are generally focused on the person who actually joins your party, not someone close to them who's evil and bad. Getting to actually see someone at their worst makes seeing them at their best so much better, and it makes you feel much closer.

I really agree with you. One thing is that Yosuke actually does have his color theming with his red v neck and headphones on his main outfit. He is the most similar to just the plain yaso outfit aside from rise though.

idk if its just me but the way the p4 cast just refer to each other as “classmates” or whatever just makes them feel less as friends. in p5 u see the characters interact and hang out with each other but in o4 it just seems like they just had one real friend in the group they talked to and hung out with and then everyone just praises the mc.

Persona 4 PS2 is the first one I played in the series. My local PS2 game seller suggested it to me. Tried it and fell inlove with it. Best random time I had.

I think its due to it being the most well rounded in terms of offering a fun narrative, great cast of characters and having the confidants feel fun to develop with each level up as there isnt really a notiably bad confidant here and they have much better story progression then p3 when confidants were a new concept. In comparison 3 has a good story but lacks a developed social link system which define the other games and Tartarus is a slog on the other hand persona 5 has a solid cast fun dungeon design but a rudimentary plot that didnt engage me the same way the other two did however the confidants were good at the very least so it wasnt all bad storywise

Nah they definitely feel like a team fighting for a goal. Compare this to p4 with how many times the characters hang out with or without the mc. They feel more natural . Persona 5 had the worst dynamic for sure tho

ngl, out of the persona games, i think i prefer 3 (specifically fes), idk, i think it just hit me real hard, aswell as that, i actualy kind of like not being able to directly control the party, while it can be annoing when mitsuru attempts to marin karin a boss again, when the party actualy manages to pull of a plan you trhough together, it feels real damn gratifying

Actually, the real reason it became so popular was because of the re-release of the golden on Vita and the anime. Before that, the persona and smt series were so niche and hidden like the gaia series. Heck, it even came out super late in the ps2s life cycle. every time i told my friends i was playing persona 3 and 4 and devil summoner instead of playing the new sytems, they were like "whats a persona?"

I respect the hustle since the volatility of shorts for the gaming audience is entirely shallow. Gonna be up front about it and yeah you can’t contest P4 seems to have the best story and regret watching the anime during the time it was hard to buy. The story in the solo anime holds up. Now i just gotta try P3 reloaded simply cause I didn’t experience the full story. P5’s angst and stealing turned me off. Never looking back.
