It's actually quite common than you think, but the degree of it is different for each culture. For example : when you go to a wedding, you have to look like you're celebrating the wedding as guest. So, you have to look good to show respect to the couple. For work, usually just look clean and presentable enough. But I believe it's more harsher for women in South Korea.

I had/still have to some degree, heavy acne. I also have a heavy lactose and gluten intolerance and so back then i would have some harsh rashes on top of my acne. I got it under control now but you know, when i worked as a archiviste for some lawyers, i would not wear makeup at all because i wanted my skin to breath. Also i don't work to look pretty, i work to work. In my country people won't say it is inappropriate to not wear makeup because so many don't wear it either but you could tell, that for the lawyers, especially those who walked in like channel runway models, they wanted to present a certain "look" and so i didn't fit that and some looked up and down on me at times and some other case workers starred at my skin so much, that they didn't focused on my word, when i talked to them. It made me self contious but then a new coworker started the job and she had a accident and was full of scars from her face down to her feet. There was nothing wrong with her at all and she wore even short skirts, which i applaud her for and she appreciated how i would not give in on the beauty standards so it made me really happy. 😊

Do you think it only happens in korea? Sadly, no. In SEA as a women you also should wear makeup all the time especially if you're working. Although I don't have much occasion to wear makeup but I do feel a little pressured by how anyone would force school girls to wear makeup in special gatherings/ events or that girls are thought to wear makeup to those occasions because that's the only appropriate way of attending.

Tbh I first heard of that many many years ago from the Japanese. Sadly this is the reality for us, they offer “student discounts” on things like double eye-lid surgery and rhinoplasty just in time for HS graduation. Allegedly the idea is that you’ll be pretty and your face will have “set” by the time you get into university. This is also a part of a bigger problem. Which is the education system and students practically killing themselves and their parent’s retirement funds to get into top universities, but I wouldn’t burden you with all that infodumping lol.

Korean models also revealed that they weren't allowed to even have a sip of water for days before event such as fashion show, or MV shoot so that their veins and muscle looked firm, or for girl so that they looked thinner and Vshape face. @NotAnotherKuromi

@ForeverYoung💕 That isn't now dehydration works... veins look nore firm with more water. The appearance of muscles is dependent on protine consumption and exercise not water consumption. For example it is common for models to do a quick work out before a photoshoot to prep their muscles to stand out. Not drinking water will only weaken the body, make them more fatigued & in ill health. Anyone following those standards are both scientifically ignorant & dangerous. Unless you have a kidney disease or on medication like prednisiolne then the body will not hold on to enough water to affect how puffy it looks. If determined to lower this then saunas etc can be used but still drinking some water is needed to run the body and survive. (The only exception is for body builders or those with incredably low fat percentage & incredably high musvle content, then water can slightly affect the small muscle lines but they still drink some water, to keep in good health.)

Yep the way if a woman goes to job interview in certain jobs without makeup then there’s no way she’s getting the job, but men can go fresh faced with no makeup to the same job interview and that’s totally acceptable. And if a woman hasn’t shaved her legs/underarms etc _everyone_ says she is gross or a “crazy feminist” or whatever… but men can walk around with leg hair and underarm hair and no one bats an eye :o it’s so bizarre!!!

And yet, most Koreans think of themselves as prettier or more handsome than Chinese & Japanese in some of the street interviews I've seen, like seriously? They also like to look down on Southeast Asians even praising someone from SEA with words like as pretty as a Korean & not looking like a southeast asian at all ON NATIONAL TV. Those kind of ppl not only like to judge others on physical appearance, but also think that their race is superior in appearance to other Asians. What a joke
@ellandna510
@ellandna510 Жыл бұрын
True and the funniest part is I think a lot of SEA people on the street look much pretty than any korean people. Idk but they look more natural and just pretty. I think it bcs lots of SEA people have mixed blood so they tend to look different and hv a different features. Some of my friend look like Chinese but with double eyelid, small face with perfectly eyebrow. My other friend look like someone from middle east while others hv Indian features (sharp eyebrows, brown skin). If in korea, lots of them are pale and they prefer the one who has pale skin but in my country (SEA), some people are pale, some people are brown and some are white so the beauty standard is mostly about the appearance itself. I'm a student and I see a lot of people here are focusing on their appearance, fashion and how they doll themselves. It's not a matter of skin colour or your face feature. I think everyone here hv a mindset like 'everyone can be beautiful. All you need to do is take care of your looks'

Wtf this is so accurate. You know how USA has Hawaii, my country (SEA) has an island too with lots of tourists. But Korean tourists are another level of stuck-up. They act like they own the place and we should kiss up to them just because we are dirty tan-skinned SEA. They’re on their high horses thinking we worship them, want to be fair-skinned like them, have a crush on them; that thought makes me cringe!! No!! Just because of the K-wave and the abundance of new K-pop fans these days, doesn’t mean everyone worships them. i think most beauty standards are made with the aim of controlling women and forcing them to "fit in" and show that they're making efforts to please society at large, it's why even the most beautiful woman could feel uncomfortable going out without makeup. this effect is especially pronounced in beauty-obsessed or collectivist countries like korea, where almost everyone around you polices your appearance quite openly, people will try to find more faults in women because of jealousy or because they feel like their advice and subjective views are the best, and these women will take it to heart and destroy their mental health and half their life chasing after unattainable perfection and flawlessness

plastic surgery is SO cheap in korea. i'm in the market for a rhinoplasty for both medical and cosmetic reasons, so i immediately looked at korean clinics. the same procedure would cost me, at minimum, $10,000 to 15,000 USD... while in korea, the procedure will cost me around $3000. the low price had me looking at my face deeper and wondering what else i could change for such a cheap price (it's a steal, so why not?? i thought). but it really is a slippery slope. when beauty standards are so outlandish and enforced, even to the point of impacting your career, and surgeries are cheap, i can't blame the average korean person for feeling pressured to conform

Unfortunately appearing your best is extremely important in Korea because it's seen as a direct reflection of who you are (there is even a whole culture of "face feature interpretation" e.g. hooked nose means you hold grudges, sagging cheeks means you're greedy and jealous etc.). It's also rooted in Confucian influenced philosophy, where not looking your best and proper is almost be seen as "losing face" and "un-gentlemanly/un-lady-like". So Korea always had a culture of being extremely nosy about how others appeared, and the introduction of Western fashion and beauty only made things worse to the point it is today.

Yet many people idolize KPOP groups that are not that good singers. As long as you have good looks in Korea, you can be anything.

thanks God I'm not korean or born in Korea 🙏😢 But feeling bad for those immature k-pop and k-drama fan who think everything is good in Korea , Korea is heaven, Korean are angels, all Korean oppa are caring and noona is sweet Broo like seriously every country has good and bad people and Korea also has both types of people So don't judge a country by their drama 😒 okkkkk , i said okkk 😅 and love yourself 😊

This lookism culture of South Korea is so toxic. I am Indian and do not use makeup... In fact most of the times the only product I use on my skin is moisturizer. I believe in Korea, you need to put on make up just to go out of your house, coz people are judged on the basis of their looks. Frankly speaking, I do not give a damn if somebody comments on my looks. I feel free enough to tell them to mind their own business😂😂

I'm Chinese and one of my high-school classmates traveled there once, she came back just absolutely amazed by how nice Korean people looks. She wondered whether if it's just as easy to get a plastic surgery there as getting a new haircut or manicure or something. Sad to see it's not🫣

I think it's 2 extremes. People are overly competitive about looks in Korea whereas in the states we just dress like slobs and get fat. Both seem unhealthy in their own ways, should be more in the middle where no one feels burdened but we should also wanna eat healthy and promote exercise to everyone.

I think it also depends on where you live. I can tell you that living in Denver I haven’t seen that mentality much. But my siblings live in different parts of the country where I notice that mentality more. So I think it just depends. But I definitely very much agree that the emphasis no matter where you are should be to eat healthily and exercise!!

@@annacoello7623 For sure, I was just speaking more generally but yeah countries are big places so you'll get a little variety based on where you're at. Probably same with Korea too, downtown Seoul is probably much different from far outside the city.

I was never into Korean drama, pop etc (maybe a couple of movies) but I started to like Korea when I was a teenager because I was doing taekwondo classes and wanted to visit it for its futuristic cities and temples in nature. I literally spent hours a day for years researching beatiful places online and informations that I'm pretty much convinced I know places that not even koreans know hahah.. When I was looking information about the country online I noticed it was as if the country suffered of a huge self image and esteem issue, making always rankings and statistics comparing to other countries, faking history (taekwondo history for example!). I'm just realizing now that I was sucked into this vortex of obsession but probably in a different way than most, its shocking!

But doesn't body shame happen anywhere? I'm an Indian and I'm just 43 kg in weight, still on many occasions some people have called me fat in a very rude way. I've also been shamed for looks and my short height. I even got mean jokes of people on my hair and accent and what not. It took me years to accept myself the way I'm. Judgmental people can be everywhere.

Not just in this "era". It has always been, it plays a part or a role somehow. But not in totality. People still look past that if you are someone with talent or if you're a good person. Like, there are still actors or entertainers who aren't that attractive but soars high in their careers.

It's a shallow culture. They pour all their value into surface level looks instead of being a good honest person. I heard that even Korean companies hire employees based on their looks regardless of the employee's educational or job experience. Why you ask? "Company wants to maintain the image of high quality by having good looking employees" THIS is a cultural difference I simply will not grasp. I don't associate the reputation and quality of a company to the looks of their employees. This is further proof how disgustingly shallow the culture is
