I was back in Blackpool with my good friend ‪@somewheredifferent‬ who offered to show me round talk more about why it is so cheap to buy here, and also look at some of the huge old hotels that are currently selling for super cheap.
One has 62 ensuites, on the beach front and is valued at less than half a million pounds.
Is it official? Is Blackpool the cheapest place, by sqaure foot, to buy housing. Let me know if you know somewhere cheaper. I'd be really interested to come check it out

Turnip. I suggest for your 4th trip to Blackpool, you check out the Blackpool hardly anyone but the locals get to see! And that is the area around the park, around 2 miles or so back from the 'front' of Blackpool! There, you'll find a spectacular park, with wide open playing fields, multiple sports available (including a great BMX track), lakes and ponds and a lovely café! There is also a fantastic zoo there, the perfect size for 1 day's visit to see everything and you can even enter the Lemur pen! There is also a lovely model village, with its own parking and behind the park are several mere's with paths around them for people to walk/cycle around! And no, I don't live there but stayed near there and thought it wonderful compared to the front which cam sometimes be very busy - and a completely different vibe to the touristy front!

I have a very negative view on Blackpool, but it comes from having vile in-laws there. But one thing I will say is that when you get away from central Blackpool there's some truly "wow" locations. Give it a chance, scratch beneath the surface and you'll find a gem of a place. Sadly though the problems massive, its uber lower class, but given some proper long term work from a council that gives a shit about its residents, it can rise from its very cracky ashes.

My daughter got a flight to Ibiza for about €50 return on easy jet. It's €100 return from London to Blackpool on the train. Trains are too expensive in the UK and that's partly why people would rather holiday in Spain with flights being so cheap.

I remember in the 1960s-1970s when a lot of streets in Notting Hill and Kensington looked just as grotty as Blackpool does now,but look at those streets now,they`re immaculate and you can`t even buy a little terraced house for less than £1 Million,and with more positive people like Duncan showing a bit of foresight and optimism places like Blackpool could come back one day too.

Good to see this guy has made a go of it. And is providing a good service. He has found a niche market that works. Could it scale up to a 62 room set up. Not so sure. Blackpool in the sun is fine. Blackpool in the Winter is shut. Even at its height it was seasonal. So to fill consistently a big complex you would need an angle. Student accommodation. Welfare housing. Split up the rooms to add in small kitchens. Self contained low income or welfare cheque recipients. Many years ago I used to maintain a string of ex dock workers properties. After the docks closed most moved away. The houses sat empty, then sold cheap. Really cheap. A guy I knew bought loads. Got in touch with the government welfare department. Filled every one consistently. The rent was paid direct from the government. No chasing tenants. The police did more damage doing drug raids. It could be made to work. But you need that edge to keep it going.

I bloody love Blackpool; always have. My father and I go on a near annual pilgrimages there. This video reminds me it's overdue another visit. We've stopped in dives, we've stopped in the football ground but we always have a good time. My Great-Granddad used to take my father to Robert's Oyster Bar and we carry on that tradition. Respect to Duncan for just going for it and succeeding. If he had the same attitude as some of the guys in the comments (Blackpool is a shithole, it's a dump, etc.) then he would have let this good opportunity pass. People can work from almost anywhere these days. It makes no sense at all to shell out 500 grand for some tiny shoebox in some crime ridden shithole in London, when your money can go so much further elsewhere. Sure the town has seen better days but with more people with Duncan's attitude coming in and investing, which will bring in more guests and their spending money, the future of the town may be brighter than people think.

If you have a Job that enables you to work remotely then agreed, why live in London & that's what lots thought of during Covid or just after. As someone who has worked in London for 25 yrs for my Job then the one thing that has never changed is, "Im not retiring in London". Working here for the last 25 yrs & doing shift work for 25 yrs means I'll be retiring at 55 & moving to the Coast. Blackpool & any Coastal Town is completely different as a Tourist/Visitor as opposed to living in it every day. There will always be shithole places but people tend to move for work. Great that Duncan has made a success of the place & give people a place to work.

62 ensuites that's £7,662 per room, that is ridiculously cheap! Needs a lot doing on the inside I'd imagine you have to spend a further half a million at least. But I believe for most budget hotels they look at around £40,000 - £80,000 per room so it's a huge discount.

Going by my gas and electricity bill for my pubs I would hazard a guess that the energy costs would be around £80-100k per annum.

It's not cheap of course not, it's a 62 room hotel it's never going to be cheap just cheaper than alternatives at that scale.

@Ardwick-Crome the main thing here is structural work and specifically mold and damp. It's a budget hotel you can get the interiors for relatively cheap. £3 million would be so much that would be £55,000 per room, which you could literally just build a new hotel for that much. In what world should the energy be £600k. It would be about 10 times less than that. Minus the energy cost for the bar restaurant and lobby, that would be about £9,000 a year on energy per room or 6 entire houses worth of energy. I don't think it is humanly possible to spend that much on energy per room. Maintenance is normally based of revenue, rather than fixing what needs to be fixed and the revenue for somewhere like this means at maximum £150,000. Employees is going to be the biggest expenditure depending on how the restaurant is run and how hands on you want to be.

When I was a kid staying at Blackpool the beach was so packed it was like a maze as there were so many deckchairs, wind breaks and sheer volume of people I got lost and could not find where my parents were, the beach wardens etc had to announce my name so they could come and collect me from a Punch and Judy show😆 that was back in the 1960's. As someone that went to Blackpool once as a Kid with my parents & never been back then I dont plan on visiting Blackpool again anytime soon. However if you look at some places down South from London. Brighton can be reached by Train for less than £20 Ramsgate/Broadstairs/Kent/Coast around £40 Bournemouth is £70 Devon probably close to £100 Im sure. So people just dont go for day trips like they use too.

There's not enough money to be made for the investment you need once the buildings have fallen too far into disrepair - it has to be a labour of love for someone. I live here and its a shame because some of the buildings are amazing. Another big issue is the councils reluctance to grant change of use licenses for buildings - once they're a hotel its hard to get them to change it to residential buildings instead. So youve got buildings that are designated hotels, that wont return money on investments, that cant be converted into residential property

Err have you checked out the train faires from Blackpool to London or Blackpool to Glasgow ?! One of the reasons we don’t go up there much it’s a 6 hour drive from the south or as I said horrendous train fares for a small family you are taking over £400!! Having spent some time in Blackpool I can say the winters are relentless windy and rainy as you are facing the Irish channel, out of season the bars are dead the atmosphere goes, everyone goes into hiding. Duncan is a little bit of a sales pitcher me thinks lol 😂

Two things that need to be remembered when buying business premises such as a hotel are the insurance, and business rates. These can be very easy to overlook when dreaming of the possibilities of such places.

My paternal grandmother went to school in Bispham, my maternal relatives were French and lived there in the 1800s. Britain's main point is the lack of education of some people that live in the UK & the Gvt's that they then put in power. I always say, never moan about the weather as you cant change it. The cost of going aboard got cheaper & the cost of a UK "Stay-vacation" got more expensive so these places failed. Like Duncan said though, he lives 5 mins from the sea & even in January it can be amazing which is why so many people like to live by the Coast.

The big problem with cheaper properties (like our house) is the real cost is in renovation and repairs, and in the end they usually turn out to not be that good of a deal. We are talking about properties that have been neglected for decades with inherent costs to repair properly.

My grandmother in law had a bnb on the north shore in Blackpool years ago called the Knightsbridge bless her she used to send all her post with a Knightsbridge stamp on like it was from Kensington Palace. We are a posh family from very near Hawkshaw small village nearby but we are not royalty and it made us laugh. Thanks for the video 😂😂

Spent most of my school holidays in Blackpool in the 80s , my aunty owned a guest house called Glen home , it was located across the from the Lucky Star arcade , and about 400 metres away from the pleasure beach and the south pier. I used to love staying their me and my cousin used to help a little in the guest house going to the laundrette to help with the bedsheets , but mostly we went to the FUN HOUSE it was a £1 to go in, and you could stay all day , you would come home with friction burns and whiplash lol also if the guests had any ride tickets left, they would leave them to my Aunty Ann, and she would give them out to us kids .

I live in the isle of man and when i was younger there used to be a Tynwald day (Manx holiday) day trip on the 5th of july. It was a return ticket on the ferry to Fleetwood and then you could get the tram to blackpool, me and my mates 1st went aged 11 and i think maybe stopped around the age of 20? so it went from all day at the pleasure beach, to half the pleasure beach and arcades on the front, to bit of pleasure beach and shopping in the shopping centers as we became more aware of fashion (iom didnt have big brand stores back then and no internet) and eventually shopping and pubs, so as we grew older so did our experience. the 1st time i went the return ticket on the ferry was £8 and the last time we went it was £21! I couldn't put diesel in the car for that now lol. since then ive travelled abroad quite a bit and lots of different places in the uk including blackpool. and as good as the the carribean and canary islands Undoubtably are ,some of my best memories travelling come from the day trips to blackpool with a group of mates some of which are sadly no longer with us. Ive since took my own kids (who adults themselves now) to the pleasure beach ,aquarium, waxworks and the xmas lights turn ons as well as shows, so they now understand why i loved the place so much when i was a kid, lovely place and lovely people has always been my view on Blackpool

It's a great point about the central location with train links. Tourists and nomads typically want to visit: London York Edinburgh No better location really - even if you're not keen on Blackpool (understandably), you have a sea view on the cheap and are perfectly located to dip in and out of the tourist hotspots.

Unfortunately any government investment goes through the local council, and Blackpool borough council tend towards spectacularly poor decision making when it comes to regeneration

Blackpool is awful in epic proportions! I remember as a kid in the mid 80s being ok! My mum used to holiday there when she was little in the late 50s and early 60s and again loved it. I took my kids a few years ago for the lights. We stayed for about 20 minutes. Couldn't wait to get out!!

I lived in Blackpool in its glory days from 1958 until the end of the 60's when my job moved me away. I did most of my schooling in Blackpool and the senior schoolI went to only opened in 1957 with all modern amenities. Morecambe & Wise even opened one of our annual summer feats . I only have one relative who still lives in Blackpool very close to Stanley Park. I am saddened to see how Blackpool has declined

Continental Blackpool ❤ We used to go to Blackpool every year for a week or two. But not been for 35 years or more. It has been sad to see its decline Hopefully its on the way up 2x👍 I remember seeing the elephants on the beach first thing on a morning.

I live in Southport and can see Blackpool across the bay, it strange because you can actually see glass flaring fron car windows, it looks so near but is miles away. We don't quite have the same problem with unoccupied property. But there are shops now emptying out.
