***UPDATE***
Finally, after quite a bit of back and forth yesterday and today (20.8 - 21.08), I have received complete answers from Remarkable regarding the issue, and all is summarized in the final reply from them:
"To address your question, the thumbnails are not synced but are cached to improve performance."
This is what I hoped for regarding the synchronization, but the caching of thumbnails is a questionable practice, as far as adherence to GDPR rules goes, as it is clearly unnecessary.
